View Full Version : Am I Getting Taken For A Ride?
Hey dudes and dudettes, so I live in CT which is devoid of any decent indie bands or studio for that matter. I am currently searching for a studio where I can record some solo stuff and I have only talked to two guys so far and one wants 1.2k for ONE song. He said he will professionally produce and make it radio quality. It was just supposed to be an acoustic song but he said for 1.2k he will "Do It Up" and make it full band and add tons of instrumentals and I can take as long as I want to work on it. He is only 21 but he is working on his own deal with Universal Records do become a solo artist.
The other guy I talked to will charge $75 for a basic acoustic song but is booked till Jan 09. I also asked my mom friend who's son is a sound engineer in NYC and has worked on NIN's last major label record, but he says he has no free time to help me out but is going to refer me to a local guy he knows which I have yet to hear back from.
Sigh...
I don't want to be taken for a ride here but want decent quality tracks. Think NeverShoutNever! When my old band was in talks with Geoff Rockwell (FTSK, Red Car Wire, Artist Vs Poet) he was going charge 5k for a whole EP. So can someone give me advice on which road I should take?

if you want the basic acoustic go for cheaper
if you want full band next radio hit...go with the 1.2k if you think the song has potential that is

Haha, Timbaland charges waaaaaaay more than $1200 for a song, he probably makes that in an hour or two, that's hilarious. For $1200, I would say you should be able to get 1 full band song produced and recorded. It cost me about that about 8 years ago to produce a 3 song demo, but it didn't have a full band.
Have you listened to the stuff each guy has produced? That's probably the most telling part. Generally, I would trust the expensive dude way more than the $75 dude personally. If I was being charged $75, I would have no expectations of anything good coming out of it. If you want a demo that you can actually use to get you booked, it costs money and that's the way it typically works.

I didn't get that from his post, but I can sort of see what you're saying. If that's the case, that's a ridiculous amount to pay for 1 song. I would really want to know what stuff this guy has produced in the past though.
OP, please come back and give us more info. Oh and btw, wait to work with the NIN producer guy, that sounds like the best plan if you can do that.

screw that. the dude who wants $1200 is stupid to charge that when he's an unknown producer. Eff that. You might have better luck looking in the phone book or calling around to music schools in your area and seeing if any of the people there are willing to do it. Good luck.

I was in San Francisco at that time, and I was working with a professional producer who has produced top 10 singles. Like I said, it really depends on their qualifications and background as to whether they are justified in charging a lot of money like that.
