i acutally like i'm only a man best. the first three tracks on the ep are some of their strongest songwriting and the last four suck so hard i cant believe it.

I honestly love all three albums and the EP, but I have to go with The Question. The Weak's End is an absolutely fantastic album and I love it, but The Question has the qualities I love about The Weak's End with much more dynamic production.

It is really, really close between the first two albums, though. This band really does have some incredible songs and a style that a lot of other bands can't and don't try out all that often. Some of their freakin opera-esque singing is really unique in their peer group. IT's brilliant and I love it.

Absolutely one of my favorite bands.

PS you should've given the option of The Columbus EP and gotten rid of the "Emery sucks" one.

Apparently I'm not a true fan cause I honestly have never heard of "The Colombus EP". I checked their discography on wiki just to make sure I had everything and that wasn't even on there. Fail.

I totally agree with you though, the Question for me was a tiny step up from the Weaks End simply because of the production value. I love everything Aaron Sprinkle does and I am so insanely stoked that he is working with them again on this new album. Gives me really high hopes.

Every album seems to have a few good songs, but never anything great and the rest of the songs suck.

Do you even know how to use Wikipedia? It's there go look again

I chose Emery sucks because they are no longer relevant . I'm not even a fan anymore and I knew about The Columbus EEP. That shows you shouldn't have made this poll if you don't even know about the band's entire discography. FAIL
that and the columbus eep is awful. they do 7 plus minute songs and they just didnt know how to write good songs yet.

I remember listening to it and thinking why the hell are these songs so long. I really don't understand how a band that has been mediocre their whole career has so many fans. They have always come across to me as a poor man's TBS.
yeah i see what you mean. i like emery quite a bit, but i can totally understand why you are not a big fan. they have recycled a lot of ideas, although i did enjoy i'm only a man, which they tried some different things.

That"s ridiculous. They aren't too similar, except for the fact that they both are catchy. They also are extremely tight live.

You sir are one dumb motherfucker. TBS got very popular with the sing/scream pop-punk stuff. Alot of bands followed suit including Emery. The similarities are undeniable. They are and have always been a mediocre band.
Tell All Your Friends 2002 >Weak's End 2004. TBS came first

haha I hope you didn't get the impression that I was implying something like that! I don't have it and when I downloaded to it I wasn't even inspired to put it on my iPod.

I just thought it would be a good replacement for "emery sucks" because that isn't really an answer to the question, and The Columbus EP is the only Emery EP/LP missing from the list.

They have always come across to me as a poor man's TBS.
Whooooaaaa. No offense, but that is one of the most outlandish things I've heard in a while! Have you listened to The Question...or any of their albums since that EP (I guess I would ask the same about tbs)? Their vocals, chord progressions, and music in general wipe the floor with Taking Back Sunday. No offense, but that is just complete nonsense. I'm a fan of them both, but wow. That is like saying Blink 182 is a poor mans All Time Low, or Underoath is a poor mans Hawthorne Heights. It just ain't right!

If you think that these songs sound like a poor mans taking back sunday I think you REALLY need to listen closer to both bands music. Like, a LOT closer.

Its all good man, i was just being sarcastic :p

Honestly I'm so confused by all of this. You said you download "in shallow seas we sail" but the release date is 09. lol that is why i didnt include it in the poll, i didnt think it was even a viable option at the time. enlighten me, please!

Thank you for putting in a good word for common sense. When I read a post even remotely comparing Emery to TBS, I can't do much more than let out a sigh. I seriously cannot begin to even try to argue with something that... retarded?

The Weak's End is their best album. The Question was good, but it just didn't have the intensity of their first album.

That's so interesting to hear someone think that they try too hard to be a trendy band or whatever. The operatic way that they sing and their delivery in general is something that is so...Emery. I think that much of their music is incredibly distinct and, to be honest, a lot more mature and refined than the bands they get grouped with. A lot of their songs make you feel like you are at some kind of rock infused opera or something.

I mean really, listen to the vocal delivery. A lot of their vocals are so much more epic and mature than other bands could ever dream of.

In fact, I didn't like their vocals or the band at all when I first heard them because they sounded kind of different and weird and it didn't sit well with me. I was used to totally different vocals from bands in the "screamo scene" or whatever you want to call it.

blindrider529
11/27/08, 11:58 PM
They are one of those bands you grow our of when you realize how painfully redundant and average they sound.
haha I'm sorry, but that makes me feel like you haven't listened to them much. They could do covers of other bands in their genre with ease and they would sound great, but 95% of the other bands in this genre don't have the voices or vocal training to pull off emery vocals in the right way.

Obviously I probably won't convince you, but I highly recommend really spending some good quality time listening to The Question with an open mind. It's really in it's own league.

blindrider529

I kind of grew out of this genre a few years ago.
haha I did, too! In fact I was never very into it. I hardly listen any music with screaming at all.

I think Emery absolutely stands out like a soar thumb when they are considered in that scene, and that's probably why I enjoy them and not much of the rest of the genre. They truly have some brilliant qualities about them that their "peers" just couldn't match if they wanted to.

The way you feel about Emery is exactly how I feel about Chiodos.
haha that's funny because Chiodos is one of the other very few bands who I actually decided to listen to in that "genre." I honestly have a really, really hard time listening to them because of a lot of their vocals just grind on my nerves, but I bought their last album (not the new one) and they are definately another one of those bands that are really, really talented and do things that most of their peers could never do.

if you listen to both bands acoustically live. you'll be able to tell that Toby can sing and Adam cant.
I do love both bands but Emery>TBS.

Craig Owens is simply OK. I get an unbelievable amount of shit for my opinion on this but every bone in my body is convinced. I think he has potential, he just over shoots most of the notes he tries to hit and its so painfully obvious every time (key word; painfully). So I can definitely agree with you on that one. And your right.. the band IS talented.

I'm sorry, but everything TBS has done after Tell All Your Friends has been completely laughable. Sure, they have a few good singles, but it just sucks compared to TAYF.

Emery on the other hand has had two very, very solid albums, and a new EP that is solid until the latter half. I'm Only A Man is MUCH better than Louder Now by TBS. So I'm afraid your argument is moot about TBS being better than Emery.

I agree with your thoughts on TBS, but I really don't believe I'm Only A Man was a solid album. It seemed like they were struggling to figure out what they really wanted to sound like, not to mention the album completely tanked.

I assumed that they meant that The Weak's End and The Question were the two solid albums and just threw in that I'm Only a Man was better than the TBS album.

Personally, I didn't care enough about Taking Back Sunday to buy any of their albums after Tell All Your Friends, and I love every Emery album. I'm Only a Man does sound like a bunch of mixed up demos with a few b-sides from The Question, but I still liked it quite a bit.

Putting "Emery sucks" in the poll was a stupid idea in my opinion. The point of a thread/poll titled "what's your favorite (insert band here) album/EP" should be for discussion among people who actually like the band, not an opportunity for douchebags to come in and trash them.

Anyway, Emery is one of my favorite bands...while I love everything they have put out, I had to vote for The Question. The emotions contained in every song just gets me every time.
