i think that it possible, but i don't know if it will happen. the best they will do i think will probably be at the bottom of the top 10 if not just right now of it. def not in the top 5. and if does make it up to the top 10 it will not stay very long due to no mtv or any video play at the moment due to a lack of a video for the song. once the video is released i'm sure it will do much better again. it does get radio play but the amount of people that actually listen to the radio anymore is very very limited.

I was just thinking, It's crazy to me how The Mars Volta could outsell a band like Fall Out Boy, who are ten times more radio friendly and mainstream sounding. I'm not saying that 80k is weak AT ALL.. haha, I think that's absolutely incredible, but I'm just in shock as to how well TMV did the first week and I would never expect them to outsell a Fall Out Boy, or even a TSL. Everything is so unpredictable. I guess the $5.99 at Best Buy helped push TMV over the top, as well as the fact Strummer shipped it gold right off the bat.

I think it could also have to do with the fact that TMV are more accepted in mainstream areas than Fall Out Boy. I mean it may not be commercially mainstream but I know that a lot of people like them who don't know anything about underground music.

I personally think the new album is better than the first. People get so wrapped in production and shit it's pretty annoying. Fall out boy did what they do best with this CD, gosh. Nobody complained that Weezer's album was recycled chord progressions and vocal melodies, still awesome though.

I don't know if you frequent any other "punk" news sites, but this one is by far the best, and does the best job at covering a wide varieties of bands.
I used to frequent "punknews.org" until I found this one when Caleb started working here. At punknews.org, I never heard anything about really underground bands. I never heard anything about "Absolutely Unsigned" (or whatever it's called, I forget)
Basically, this site is far and away better than most other music news sites for this genre of music.
Yea, they are posting alot of FOB news lately, but kids want to hear that. And like it was said earlier, they are releasing a highly anticipated major label debut. There is gonna be alot of news.
And if they are making some extra money to fund this site by posting more FOB news, good for them. But as you stated that they need to post about other bands, they do, quite frequently actually. And if they have to post extra FOB to fund this site to keep posting about TREOS or some obscure band that is gonna be your favorite band 6 months from now, that's fine by me. Just don't read the FOB news.

I'm not bashing on anyone (well, minus a few people) - because this is a stupid conversation, stupid argument, and there is no need for this idiocy to continue in every single FOB thread. News is something you can skip over if you don't want to read it .. it's not like there's a gun to your head. When you pick up the Wall Street Journal do you read every damn article and then go, "ahhh.. fuck these guys they have 4 articles about Carly Fiorina today.." --- probably not, because when Carly was in the news it was a BIG deal to the business world, and therefore: more articles pertained to the crack whore ex-ceo. Im kinda surprised they dont have a video on MTV yet....that may lessen my initial week 1 prediction of 50,000. Once the numbers for Acceptance from last week come out I should be able to guess a little better, considering the lack of promotion "Phantoms" got in major media outlets(Best Buy/Target). Neither of them showed "Phantoms" in their weekly ads and this week both of them are showing FOB at $9.99 or so. That alone will give them a good 10,000 more easy.

Im just guessing all of this, but wouldn't doubt it happens.

I have a subscription to Music Match on Demand jukebox and they just added "Sugar We're Going Down" and even though I have heard it many times before listening to it again yesterday I just dont see how these guys will not become the "it" band in 2005. I was just thinking, It's crazy to me how The Mars Volta could outsell a band like Fall Out Boy, who are ten times more radio friendly and mainstream sounding. I'm not saying that 80k is weak AT ALL.. haha, I think that's absolutely incredible, but I'm just in shock as to how well TMV did the first week and I would never expect them to outsell a Fall Out Boy, or even a TSL. Everything is so unpredictable. I guess the $5.99 at Best Buy helped push TMV over the top, as well as the fact Strummer shipped it gold right off the bat.


I wouldn't be surprised if some of that had to do with the fact that people buy mars volta albums because they think it's cool to like the mars volta and not because they really enjoy the band. Now some people are writing off FOB as another yellowcard or something (which is silly) so they don't want to buy the album. I personaly enjoy both bands. That's just my 2 cents.
