Metroid - Outside It's the End of the World
Record Label: Eyeball Records
Release Date: July 1, 2008

Outside It's The End Of The World is a bag of mixed tricks. Out of the four tracks, two of them are catchy and entertaining, while the other two come off as plain annoying. The vocals straddle the line between "different" and "annoying" throughout the entire EP. The instrumentation is key, as it provides the contrast these vocals desperately need. Unlike most electronic bands, Metroid doesn't let them overpower their music; a delicate balance has been struck between the electronics and standard instruments, and they do well not to upset it.

"I'm On the List" is the most driven track of the EP. The first verse bursts into the chorus with a flourish, and the effect is marvelous. The lyrics are fairly witty with the chorus stating: "There are excuses to be made up, so come on show me what your made of." The bridge also contains the quip: "And all you are is skin that's stretched on bone, your all sighs and moans." The track progresses extremely well, and at the end of the track it seems as if four minutes has never passed so quickly. The third track, "EVP," is the catchiest of the four. Kicking into the dance-pop genre a little bit, this song will take you for a quick spin around its hook-laden chorus, and drop you off straight into an electronic beat that many band's would commit felonies for.

Now for the disappointing part. The other two tracks of the album, "Mouth Full Of Spirits" and "Spirit Axioms," are ridiculously annoying. There isn't anything particularly offensive about the songs except for the pathetically whiny vocals. They both have small redeeming moments, but with the horrible side of the vocals present throughout the entire songs, they're hardly bearable.

If Metroid could create an album with the likeness of "I'm On the List" and "EVP," it would make for a great dance-pop record. However, if they plan to have a release full of those songs that drag this EP down (which seems like it would have something along the lines of "Spirit" in its' name), it's one that I'll surely pass on.

Innerpartysystem; 50% of a good EP

I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't sued this band. I might as well start a band and call it Donkey Kong.

god dammit, I just finished writing a review for this, but it would be absolutely redundant to submit seeing as you highlighted all my main points.

my apologies for the tiffs earlier man, your reviews are well written and span a great variety of genres... they're also quiet spot on and enjoyable to read
