I'm studying abroad in Japan, and went to see MGMT tonight in downtown Osaka at 'Shangri-La.' It was my first time seeing them. Played all of their debut S/T minus 2-3. Played a few new songs, all of which sounded a bit more prog-hippe-psychadelic (as in were longer, had several "movements"). All in all they put on a decent show, highlights were their hit songs, of course. I'm still convinced "Electric Feel" is a modern disco classic, and was even better live than on record. They also sounded great considering their album has many different instruments, and they played with the standard 2 guit, bass, drums, keys.
Only downfalls I could see: They were a bit sloppy on stage; didn't know how to finish certain songs; sound guy messed up for the last song of their set (had bass wayyyy too high so much feedback the entire time) and their guitarist noticed and whispered to the bass player exactly what I was thinking, I think. Also, shows in Japan proved to be way different than in USA (who would've thought!? lol). I could hear a pin dropping in between songs and only modest and polite applause following them. I would recommend someone seeing them, it was a good time.

This band is so disappointing live. They love turning up the bass to drown out all the other instruments.

I don't know, I really did enjoy the tight drumming on Electric Feel, and an inspired performance of Time To Pretend (considering some may consider it "played-out"). I did notice a high level of bass, but it could have been due to heavy low-synths on alot of the tracks as well. Showmanship was lacking, but their careless stage presence doesn't take away from performance. I feel lucky to have seen them in a very small venue (200-300) with very good sound... I could hear the most minor details from on stage, crystal clear, it was cool.

Yeah I guess he did kinda kill the vibe at times with ridiculous/aimless shredding... Although they're all high during the set (which they openly admit), and his solo during Kids was pretty killer IMO.

Still the most over-rated band of 2008. A few drugged out college students experimenting and stumbling across a few great songs but otherwise, complete mediocrity.
