Anyone here into cyberpunk literature, films, or games? I don't really know many people who are, and as such I am left wanting for discussion and recommendations.
I don't have a lot of exposure, myself. I've done the basics. Seen Blade Runner, read some Gibson (love him long time), played System Shock/Uplink/Shadowrun, and I know what it's all about. I just figure most of the content out there is shit, and I am looking for input.
I just finished Virtual Light last week, and it has definitely revitalized my interest. So what's good?

cyberpunk is as dumb a "genre/movement/style" as steampunk is

I've only actually seen the Director's Cut. Never saw theatrical or Final.

That is to say, fucking awesome? The thing about it is that, at its core, they're all about using altered settings to comment on society using extrapolation mixed with good ol' fashion fun.
But to each 'is own.

I started to watch the final cut today, but was too tired to make it through. Supposedly its a little better.

You should watch Brainscan. Edward Furlong, a few years after T2, gets this virtual reality computer game where you murder people haha. Then the murders really happen. I haven't seen it in a while but I'm sure its still cheesy good.

I actually want to see the theatrical, too. I have a feeling the tone would be completely different with a voiceover.

Welcome to my life. I'm just going to kill myself one of these days.

Haha, I actually saw that, one night, a long fucking time ago (probably not long after it came out) on late Cinemax or something. Saw some amazingly terrible movies that way.

Yea I thought that first murder scene where he creeps into the dudes house and has to find a good weapon, in first person, was bonkers back then haha.

Also: this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Make_a_Monster_%282001_film% 29). A classic cheesy shit movie. If nothing but for the cast.

This weekend I'm going to watch Johnny Mnemonic for the first time. I will assume crash positions prior, of course.

I just read that yet another adaptation of Neuromancer is under way, but that Hayden Christiansen is attached as Case, and the director made Torque.
Whaaaaat the fuck.

One of my best friends is really into steampunk, but I don't get the appeal. I showed him this:

He didn't think it was funny.

I'm open to opinion! But I prefer it if people follow-up said opinions. Do you think it's stupid that it has a specific name, when it doesn't really need it? Or that the idea of it, in general, is stupid?

Damnit Cohaagen, give these people air!

The Linux comment made me har aloud.
I think something like this can apply to pretty much any stylization.

Read Neuromancer again last week.
Say what you will about the genre, but that book is crucial.

Read Idoru this past week.
Definitely a Gibson novel, through and through. It showed a lot of similarities to his "modern" books coming out. A worthwhile read, but I felt was quite sterile next to the already-playing-it-safe-but-still-oh-so-filled-with-vigor Virtual Light.
But I dunno. I'm talking to myself.
