Ben Stiller...fuck, dude. I give him props on Tropic Thunder for the writing, but the supporting players are what made that movie for me.

I whole-heartedly agree with Kirsten Dunst, Tobey Maguire and Rene Zellweger. Whereas I don't think Scarlett Johansson and Eva Mendes are great, or even good, actresses, I can't list them simply due to their beauty.
I would've agreed with Sean Penn last week, but I saw Milk the other night and he was superb so I can tolerate him much more now. I might even go back and look at some of his previous work and give it another shot.
Ethan Hawke was great in Gattaca and Before The Devil Knows You're Dead and Tim Robbins was great in Mystic River and Shawshank Redemption, so I have a hard time listing them as well.
However, kudos on Jamie Foxx. He is incredibly overrated, in my opinion. With that being said, I didn't mind him in The Kingdom and am looking forward to his upcoming film with RDJ.
The one that stands out the most to me, though, might be Laura Linney. What's your issue with her? There's something about her I've always liked and she's done some great work.
Sorry to pick apart your list, it just stood out the most due to the volume and some of the names. In the end, to each their own.

Heath Ledger - 10 Things was "decent" but he just didnt fit a high school student, A Knights Tale i actually never have seen. Brokeback Mountain was probably one of the worst performances i have ever seen by any actor. His accent was incredibly bad and the movie as a whole was not very good either.

Oh and on a side note....the reason that movie got recognition is because there has not been a movie of its kind. Two gay cowboys that are trying to keep it a secret...of course that will draw major attention. But Ledger's accent bothered me so much in that movie it was as if he was trying soooo hard to sound like a "texan". i dont even know if it was based in texas but thats what he sounded like. Jake, on the other hand, was fine.

Let's throw 10 Things I Hate About You out of the discussion because 1) it's a romantic teen comedy and 2) it was the beginning of his career. With that being said, he still did perfectly fine for what the role needed.
Anyway, his performance in Brokeback Mountain is one of the most honest, sincere, heartbreaking, genuine ever. It would've been a crime for him not to be nominated. Go look for what Daniel Day-Lewis (one of the greatest modern actors -- hopefully you agree) had to say about Ledger and that role/performance and then add on the fact he was nominated for an Academy Award. You might not like the film, which is fine, but the cinematography and Ledger's acting definitely are worthy of praise.
Also, what do you have to say about the job he did as The Joker?

Oh i like Daniel Day Lewis i have no problem with him what so ever, i have seen only a handful of his movies and liked him in each one.
Brokeback was a movie i just could not get into. Like i said, it was his ACCENT that i really did not like. Sometimes certain things just take you out of the movie. For me, his accent did just that. Other than that, yes it was a good love story and it was sad and all that mushy-ness.
Finally, the infamous Joker roll. I did like the Dark Knight, i really did. I have no choice but to compare with Jack's Joker back in the day.
Pros...
-Ledger was more sadistic and more of a lunatic with less humor, the humor he gave was dark (the pencil trick).
-Far better costume/make up than Jack's.
Cons...
-I didnt like the way his dialog was delivered, the stammering, somewhat stuttering and rambling. I guess that was to show his lunacy.
-He was not in the film for very long. Based on the length of the movie, he was probably in it for less than half of the total length.
-I really would have liked to see what happened to him after he was dangling from the scaffolding, maybe that was intentional to make the audience wonder if he escapes, falls, or ultimately gets discovered by the surrounding police.
So yes, i did like him as the Joker BUT....i like the character more than the actor that played him. Im pretty sure Nolan was somewhere instructing Ledger on how he wanted the Joker to be portrayed. Another actor probably could have pulled it off just as well but we wont know that unless they recast him for a possible third.

Thanks. I think Gyllenhaal may just be a personal disliking for him in general you know? Aniston is just simply horrible, but she's one of those actors that's always been under the radar because Friends was so popular no one cared. Her movies show off her real lack of talent. Also, I forgot to put Ben Stiller on my list, most of his acting in movies is awful.

She really does have absolutely no talent, and I understand your personal dislike of Gyllenhaal due to the fact that is the same reason I hate Lebeuof (sp?).

Ahhh yes... Shia... a couple of my friends hate him for what seems to be no reason other than dislike. Although he did transition well from a Disney comedy tv role to action/adventure movies.

Why would a director do such a thing? The nerve of Nolan.
Also, most of your pros and cons have absolutely nothing to do with how well the role was performed.

really? i commented on how the dialog was delivered. Meaning the way he spoke his lines. Also, i mentioned his portrayal of the Joker. What other types of ways to describe the role is there? Im not going to say that he "channeled the inner lunatic inside of him and it really shows." or something like that.
I am not a Ledger fanboy like most everyone else. The character was good, the actor portraying him was decent. I dont really know how else to describe it.

Ok, let me clarify this....
Maybe some of you guys arent praising Ledger as much as i thought. There are other forums (IGN) that is FULL of people that are OBSESSED with Heath Ledger. Saying he is the greatest actor of our generation(20 something year olds).
All im saying is that Nolan had some say as to how Ledger would play the Joker, thats it...not saying that he shouldnt have had say so but what i am saying is that Ledger did not pull this "great performance" on his own, he was guided. If people want to dispute that all i can say is, "really?". Thats what the director does, he DIRECTS! I highly doubt that Ledger was one of those actors that improvises everything and the director would allow him to run with it.
Thats all i am saying.

Examples:
-Far better costume/make up than Jack's. What the hell does makeup have to do with his acting and believability?
-He was not in the film for very long. Based on the length of the movie, he was probably in it for less than half of the total length. Being in a movie a certain length has nothing to do with the actual performance. Anthony Hopkins really wasn't on screen for much of Silence of the Lambs and most people would consider that the best performance of his career.
-I really would have liked to see what happened to him after he was dangling from the scaffolding, maybe that was intentional to make the audience wonder if he escapes, falls, or ultimately gets discovered by the surrounding police. That's a problem you have with the storyline. You can't blame anything Ledger did for that.
And I just want to make clear I am in no way a Ledger fanboy. I couldn't give a shit less about his career up until I saw his performance in TDK.

ok i was commenting on two things, his performance AND the character itself. thats why i brought up the make up thing and the ending scene with Joker. Nothing to do with Heath.

Thats all i am saying.Of course Nolan had some say about how the Joker was supposed to be. You can say this about any fucking movie ever created. But, a good actor is able to capture what the director wants, and make it believable, which Ledger was fully capable of doing. You can speculate as much as you want that other actors probably could of pulled it off, but guess what, they didn't.
I also want to point out that Ledger did do improve in his role that actually stayed in the film.
Cons

How can you blame Heath for how Nolan chose to tell the story? It was all brilliantly played out.

Agreed....He gave a good performance. :-|
It's not like on the spot he bases his performance on Nolan's command.
He took weeks of dedication beforehand trying to tap into and perfecting his character. He kept journals and became quite obsessive.

I'm glad you said it first, I guarantee that every Best Actor Winner at least a little influence from his/her director, as to the fact that the movie is essentially the director's vision, and their actors should fall in line with this vision.

I refuse to watch anything with Brendan Fraser. Journey to the Center of the Earth previews angered me because I had to watch him act, even if it was only a few seconds at a time.

I agree about the accents.
