"AP Band" Discussion Thread

Hey everyone that's interested in partaking in the awesomeness that is the "AP Band" (see the aolsux (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=70839&highlight=aolsux) thread), I finished writing my portion of the song today...I've spent a good 2-3 hours in school study halls all this week. Now comes the arduous task of recording it, so I think by Friday it should be done. Once I'm done, I'll make sure and post a link with my song so then we can keep adding to it. I'm really quite excited about this. Who else is contributing?

edit: I think this should be on main page somewhere, or an announcement about it is in news...cause this i fucking sweet.

I don't think we'll be using a ton of distortion at all. Being based around piano we're probably gonna be on the mellow side.

Thats what I figured, but your guitarist was talking about chords an octave above the piano, so I thought that would be too boring and repetitive through out a song.

I want you to play throughout the majority of most of the songs. I don't want piano overkill like Waking Ashland, but you're too good to just sorta feature in the start and then fizzle out.

Dependant on your PC, you can take your Xbox Live mic and plug it directly into your microphone input. It didn't work for a friend of mine, but it worked for me. I use an HP Pavilion. If it works for you, you could put that directly into the mic input and sing into it.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how I should go about recording my acoustic stuff? I don't have like a 4 track or anything, the only way i've ever recorded my work was straight into a computer mic. The quality, needless to stay isn't top-notch.

in my opinion you should try and record anything with a song structure and send it around to whoever is participating to see if they can come up with anything to go with it.....anyone with a mixer/recorder should burn your songs onto a CD and load it onto the mixer (if their's is capable) and after they're done...do the same with the others
yeah tomorrow, i'll see how much i can record, because dropping some G and C chords through the rest of the song should be fairly easy, and I'll post my song in partsso then you can mix them all where needed

I don't know exactly, hold on there was a website I went to that had all the specifics, I'll post again when I find it.

Actually it was if you pick with fingers keep the mic next to the bridge and if you pick with the pick then mic the fretboard. But anyways, here's the section on the acoustic guitar, read the whole thing... it's important:

To mic an acoustic, I recommend sticking your mic about three to four inches away from the point where the fretboard joins the body. Unless the guitar is way too jangly, I don’t recommend miking the soundhole because that’s where all the bass frequencies come pouring out and it will interfere with the bass in the mix. If you’re working with a fingerpicker, put the mic at the bridge of the guitar. Other possibilities include using the XY configuration mentioned above under drums to get a stereo image of the acoustic you can pan left and right. In the case of acoustic, it can actually be a good thing to get out of phase sounds from two different mics because you can pan them away from each other in a mix and it makes it sound a lot more interesting. Either way, you want the acoustic to sound shimmering in most mixes, so mic accordingly. Warmer sounds can be gained the closer you mic to the soundhole.

Well this is my first album art doing fully on the computer. We designed them in 2D Design on paper, and then scanned them in the computer, and edited from there.

Hah, and someone mentioned hand claps..I love hand claps, we should do hand claps underlying like a 20 second group vocal, that sounds awesome.

Guitar Center, H&H, and the quality difference is huge... did you read my post about micing? page 8 if you didn't, it tells you where to put the mic and stuff for acoustic guitar.

i think everyone involved should write a song, and then discuss with the others the potential, weed out the good stuff from the crap, that way, we get many different genres and styles of writing and then there is no way that the music cannot be anything but dynamic.

i've been thinking, if anyone is interested in starting a project not unlike this, only on a smaller scale, you should IM me, this is quite interesting.

This might give you something to work off of when you do the piano writing. This is just an intro. Super short and low quality (Recorded in Sound Recorder, just to demo it for you guys.) but I think it's a nice acoustic intro. Give me some thoughts/feedback.

Yeah we're already bogged down with guitarists, but vocals could be interesting. I'd kind of like to have a dual vocal sound, like Tell All Your Friends type Taking Back Sunday.

wow, that'd be a hard song to cover, AND do a decent job...that'd take some major time, with vocals and piano, i've never been a huge fan of covers, because people always put them up next to the original and unless its amazing, then it shows all of your flaws.
we also need someone who has mixed music before, because with so many different people sending so many different peices, at different qualities, its going to be a bitch to get them together and make them sound good.

It's really up to you, I like the direction you're going in, maybe we could do something to give the front more character. It doesn't seem to stand out, you know, for example, you see TSL's new CD, and you know it's theirs, because it has so many defining points.
