I think the reason it never had a chance is because it's so smart. Clearly teen dramas (One Tree Hill, The OC) get tons of viewers.
i agree with that, as far as teen dramas go, VM is too smart for the age group that may usually watch it
also, with an older audience, they most likely see teen actors and write it off as such.
i think that was the dilemma with the show

That's exactly the problem. Which sucks, because VM deserved more than that. I think our generation needs to smarten up. I know even my friends don't understand it, and hence regard it as a bad show, when it clearly isn't.

wow, i didn't know it was officially canceled. that sucks
It seems like shows where they have a strong, teenage character always get canceled.
And they have been promoting the Pussycats Dolls like crazy again (Ew)
Well guys, it was fun while it lasted. I'm just glad that I was there from the beginning to watch it.
i'll miss it, but at least it got Kristen Bell to the point where she'll probably get decent movie roles now

A VM movie would be incredible. But it would be tough to do a movie where they picked up where the story left off and do a movie from there. If I had to have anything other than the show, I think I would want books. VM was originally going to be a novel, I think it would be awesome if he finished the story with a novel or even a series of novels.

i just watched the finale.
what a shitty way to end a series. that's fucking lame.
i had accepted it was getting cancelled, but after that episode now i'm just fucking pissed.
to cancel a show like this, they need notice, so they don't end a show like this.
I finally brought myself to watch the last two episodes of the show. I had them DVRed and didn't watch them because I didn't want the show to end. The last two episodes were amazing and made me even more sad that this show is over. It's too bad it wasn't marketed the right way.
I think some novels would be great to close out the story. I am holding out a sliver of hope that the show will get picked up again in some form or another, but I doubt it.
I heard that there were rumblings about a possible mid-season pick up depending on how the new shows perform. Don't know if it would happen though.
And I was highly disappointed with the way it ended. I liked the last episode but not so much the ending...

Supposedly they have until the 15th of June for the "final decision." I wouldn't get your hopes up.
Yeah, I'm not holding my breath. I've felt burnt ever since The CW didn't include Everwood in it's lineup this past year to make room for 7th Heaven after it had its series finale...
Now, I have no reason to watch the CW and I say good riddance.

It's true. It's hasn't been 'officially' canceled, just left off the schedule. There is a slim chance that it could be picked up mid-season if the new shows don't do well.

what i don't understand is how somebody from the CW can look at their programming lineup and be like "yep, we definitely need this pussycat dolls show and all the other garbage nobody watches. but should we support the show with perhaps the most diehard following on our network and possibly let it become something great? absolutely not."

I think the sad part about American television viewers is that a TON more people actually want to watch crap like pussycat dolls and other ridiculously dumb reality shows than something that requires a little thinking like Veronica Mars.

All the entertainment websites I've been on this week keep talking about how other networks are going to pick up that show Jericho, which got cancelled by CBS (and ended up being fucking terrible and deserving of cancellation.) That drives me crazy because I wish someone in tv were smart enough to do that for Veronica Mars. I mean, if V.M. had only been on for one season and it had a cliffhanger like the one we got, I would be pissed, but not as distraught as I am now, because that's just how tv works. But the fact that people have been invested in the show for 3 years and that's how they repay us is fucking ridiculous.

Because Network TV is ridiculous and see things like this as a sign of dedication from the core audience, which is enough to convince advertisers, as opposed to money which would not go to filming another episode and just go to waste.
Marshmallows are now being thrown into the mix with the Mars Bars, since well, Veronica Mars...she's a marshmallow. They have about 300lbs of marshmallows lined up.

I tried watching it half way through season two, and it didn't really interest me. Mainly because I felt a little lost. Then I went back a few months later and watched season one online, now I'm a bit of an addict, haha.
I think it's because the show seems to be a bit more linear than other shows, and I feel like if you miss an episode or two, its kinda hard to keep up and you tend to lose interest.

DETROIT - Kristen Bell is finding it tough to let go of Veronica Mars, the wisecracking teenage TV sleuth she portrayed for three seasons.
Asked what she would miss most about the character, Bell didn’t hesitate: “Other than everything?”
“It feels sort of like graduating high school. You really only recognize how special it was once it’s gone away,” Bell told The Associated Press in a recent phone interview.
“And of course everyone graduates from different jobs then they move on, but I don’t know I’ll find as special a show ever again,” the 26-year-old actress said. “I think I’m only truly realizing that now.”
The show, which was ratings challenged but a cult hit, was canceled May 17. Bell, though, hasn’t given up all hope just yet.
The network, she said, has until June 15 to tell the show’s producers whether it might be brought back as a midseason replacement.
CW spokesman Jeff Tobler confirmed the June 15 deadline.
Even if “Veronica Mars” doesn’t make it back onto the small screen, Bell says she would be happy to reprise her role in a feature film.
“I’m game. I would work for (‘Veronica’ creator) Rob Thomas again in a heartbeat,” she said. “Not just because of his brilliance, but because he’s a great guy.”
Critics loved “Veronica Mars” from the get-go, praising Bell’s whipsmart heroine, the show’s take on high-school politics and the portrayal of Veronica’s relationship with her father (Enrico Colantoni).
Set in the fictional seaside town of Neptune, Calif., Bell’s character tackled the ups and downs of high-school life while solving crimes. The just-completed third season shifted Veronica and her pals to nearby Hearst College. She still solved crimes and battled authority, but the ratings woes continued.
While Bell’s old show doesn’t have a place in the fall, her new one does.
She’s providing the voice of the narrator (something she also did on “Veronica”) for the CW’s new “Gossip Girl.” The show centers on a group of prep-school teenagers in Manhattan.
Meanwhile, Bell is in Hawaii filming “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” a comedy produced by Judd Apatow (“The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” “Knocked Up”). She plays the title character.
The actress says she is enjoying the adult humor and improvisational nature of an Apatow production.
“It’s not that cliched romantic comedy where boy meets girl,” she said. “Nothing is really cliched in this movie. It’s all very real.”

One Veronica Mars fan suggested that we fans organize a single day on which to buy the last episode of Veronica Mars on iTunes. It only costs $1.99 (about the price of one Mars bar) and would show The CW that the show still has a lot of fans.
Since all Mars bar orders have to be in by Monday, and since Veronica Mars was broadcast on Tuesday for most of its run, I suggest we get together on Tuesday, June 12 (NOT June 14, as listed on the Ain't It Cool News site) and buy the last episode of Veronica Mars called "The Bitch Is Back".
Spread the word on every fansite, blog, MySpace page, LiveJournal, message board, email signature, YouTube video, wherever you can!
This Tuesday is the day we show The CW that we still support the show financially as well.
I'm one of the only people left that doesn't use iTunes, so I'm out of that one...
Here's a numbers update from the blog (http://www.theindianfoodstore.blogspot.com /):
4848 Snickers Almond Bars - nearly 550 pounds of Snickers!
1920 Mars Bars from England - nearly 300 pounds of Mars bars!
350 Pounds of Marshmallows
= Thats almost 1200 pounds of confectionery give or take a few pounds!

I would rather send the candy, because I wouldn't trust the CW with cash...If this doesn't work, they've pretty much lost me forever since their programming is shite.
Like it's been said before it's happened with Jericho. Roswell fans sent in bottles of Tobasco sause to insure a second season. Alias fans sent in brown paper bags for the same reason. These things do work if enough interest is there.

Do you guys know anything about the world of business and making money? Serious question.
Can't say that I do. But I do understand why it was canceled.
I just don't like it. I wish it had at least 5 million viewers a week because this wouldn't have happened. I wish the CW actually promoted themselves better. It's always going to be that 5th forgotten network with the "teen" shows.
The fact that 7th Heaven and the Pussycat Dolls had higher ratings than VM sickens me.
I also know that there's nothing on The CW that I'll be watching now. It's not a boycott. I just have no interest in anything that they have scheduled...

Veronica Mars, like Arrested Development, was doomed from the beginning. The show couldn't make up it's mind what it was at the beginning, it was a little bit too teen drama and the network marketed it as such. It got lost in the mix and the name Veronica Mars turned people off from the show from the beginning. From then, it really didn't matter what the CW did. It's all about ratings. It's all about selling ad time. The ratings for VM were bad after 3 seasons, so they canned it. It's pretty simple. It has NOTHING to do with the quality of the show, so don't blame CW for that. Blame CW for letting the show be named Veronica Mars and marketing it wrong...and blame close-minded people for never giving it a chance. More people watch Pussycat dolls...that's the show they keep.
FondestMemory
06/11/07, 08:43 PM
not to mention, this show, and many like it, are hard to sell to advertisers unless the ratings are already there.
it's not the kind of show that's going to get a lot of new viewers every week. random viewer tunes in during the middle of a season and they have no fucking clue what's going on, so they don't tune back in.
and, as much as it sucks, if the ratings aren't there after three seasons, it's pretty hard to pin your hopes on them magically appearing during the fourth.
it sucks, especially after the season three ender set up for what could be a pretty fucking amazing fourth season. but, i'm over it already.

I agree with everything you said, except maybe the title of the show. There was another show that had a silly title, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that had 7 wonderful seasons with good ratings going by the standards of the WB and then UPN. I actually laughed at the notion of it, and then it became my favorite show and still is to this day.
But then again, the Buffy title at least gave you an idea of what you would be getting yourself into...
Now Veronica Mars is headed to the small screen in the sky with BtVS, Angel, Firefly and other greats that have gone before it. It's been fun.
it sucks, especially after the season three ender set up for what could be a pretty fucking amazing fourth season
I thought the ending was pretty anti-climatic compared to the previous seasons. But I am/was curious to know what would happen to the Keith/Veronica relationship since Keith's career as sheriff was once again in jeopardy because of Veronica...

I understand the business aspect completely. I'm not that bitter, although I would have liked to see more VMars, I understand that it was canned for financial reasons.
And I must tell the truth, I didn't watch this show at all, and at first when someone rec'ed it to me, I thought the title sounded terrible. I thought it was like a pre-teen girly show. So yeah, I think that was a terrible name for the show, as far as marketing goes.
This title talk has gotten me curious. I started watching the show last summer, so I'm kind of used to the VM title. But if you had the chance what would you title it? I think we could come up with some decent alternatives. And there was talk of changing the title if the show was picked up for a fourth...

This title talk has gotten me curious. I started watching the show last summer, so I'm kind of used to the VM title. But if you had the chance what would you title it? I think we could come up with some decent alternatives. And there was talk of changing the title if the show was picked up for a fourth...

Do you guys know anything about the world of business and making money? Serious question.
We all understand the reason behind the cancelling of the show, that doesn't change the fact that people are upset about it. It's a show that everyone in here loves and doesn't want to see cancelled. I don't think anyone really got their hopes too high that the show was going to be renewed because of us sending candy, it was just a fun way to show gratitude and support for Veronica Mars. There was really no need to criticize/be a dick about it.

What am I supposed to say when I see stuff like this?
The CW is the worst network on tv. It'll fold in 5 years if they keep putting shit like The Pussycat Dolls and Farmer Wants A Wife on and cancelling amazing shows like Veronica Mars.
That's a comment that shows you didn't know what you were talking about. The CW won't fold by putting shows that get better ratings on the air...it'll fold if it keeps cult classics like Veronica Mars on the air that gets terrible ratings because America is stupid. Sorry that I called it out. It sucks, and I'm bummed at the CW too, but people always put wayyyyyyyy too much blame on the networks when shows get canceled. It's a business.

I think this could be pretty cool. I've heard that the Buffy comics are pretty good (I never watched the show, so I never read the comics.)
I love Buffy and I've recently gotten into comics, but it took me a while to really get into the S8 comics. They're great, don't get me wrong. But going from live-action to a comic book just took a while to adjust to. I'm just glad to have something since it's been so long.
I don't know how VM would work as a comic, though. People can't expect sales numbers like the Buffy issues mainly because the fanbase for Buffy is larger than VM's. I would buy at least the first issue to see how everything transfers, though.

He's had it since VM was left off the schedule unfortunately.

There's a bunch of us who take your word for gospel, and though it's already sorta out there, we just wanted to send some info your way on the Veronica Mars comic books. They'll be published by our Wildstorm imprint, which is based in San Diego, and R.T. is looking to be firmly on board. We're even hoping for a late fall release of the first issue. Hopefully, more to come...Keep up the good work!

If they're going the comic route, it has to be after the series finale. The only reason they were going FBI Veronica was because of a last ditch attempt to get renewed. Gotta stick with Veronica classic!

Here's a blog entry about how networks will be watching the DVD sales of The Black Donnelys, Veronica Mars, and Jericho: Copywrite, Ink.: Selling DVDs: NBC, CBS, and The CW (http://copywriteink.blogspot.com/2007/06/selling-series-nbc-cbs-and-cw.html)
Veronica Mars. The third season is due to be released with a 6-DVD set on Oct. 23 (not available for preorder on Amazon). Although fans pulled together a campaign that sent Mars Bars (Snickers and marshmallows too) to The CW, creator Rob Thomas confirmed a dead end on June 12.
Working for the fans. They have two seasons under their belt, both with very strong sales. They've earned Thomas' appreciation as fans, and he promised to do something with the Veronica Mars character if not in comic books, then perhaps in a new series based on the character or even a film (if you believe some rumors).
Working against the fans. There is the simple fact that many of the stars (Kristen Bell, Chris Lowell, Enrico Colantoni, and Tina Majorino) have already moved on to new TV and movie projects. So even if a character revival rumor beyond comics became true, it's likely not to be Bell. (Amazon season one sales rank, 634; season two, 573)

I was beyond pissed when they canceled Everwood in Favor of another season of 7th heaven. I mean, what the hell was the CW thinking bringing back 7th heaven? That show has been dead and awful for years now. Everwood had that one bad season, but it recouped very well i thought.

that would just be a run of the mill detective show with really nothing distinguishing it from the rest. at least in it's original form is was original.
also, having that as a season 4 premiere would just piss me off. the season three finale was a great season finale that opened up so many stories for season four. ignoring all of them and going this route would infuriate me.

it wasn't his choice to shove the series in another direction. if he had his way, he'd continue where season three left off.
the network wasn't willing to do that though. they were done with the show in it's original format. the execs didn't care about the story lines from season three. they wanted a show in a new format in hopes of gaining better ratings. the fbi angle was just a last ditch effort trying to keep the show on the air.

i understand that, im not saying he should have thrown in an ending to season 3 in the trailer. but tie up the ends in a blog or something. rob thomas knew where it was going, or where he wanted it to go. regardless it sad to say goodbye to one of the best shows on tv. but im used to it by now. since every show i watch seems to go in the brillant but cancelled category. i almost stopped watching the office because i was worried it would cancelled. thank god it scraped by. but word is kristen bell is in talks to get back on the cw.

i mean, i agree on both counts. i feel like as a die hard fan who has supported this damn show in every way i possibly could, i felt a little cheated. i feel like with all the resources available for getting your message out there nowadays, thomas could have done SOMETHING. he could have tied stuff up in some way, some how. whether it was via the internet, via a blog, a podcast or webcast, something. so yeah, i feel a little cheated to care about this show so much and then get fucked in the end. the fact that its not thomas' or anybody else's at VM camp's fault is not the point. something could have been done - because we sure as hell did everything we could on our end.
on the other hand, i completely understand that the way hollwood works isnt always fair, and this kind of stuff happens all the time. that doesn't make it any easier to swallow.
watching this made my heart beat faster - not because it was necessarily mind blowing, but because it reminded me just how much i loved this show and these characters. watching youtube clips of vm and logan just made me realize how they really did have something special in the on-screen chemistry department.
we can sit around and wish for it to come back all we want, but it will probably never happen. . but we do have 2 1/2 seasons (the 3rd counts as 1/2) of solid, solid, solid television.
i had no idea these were extras on the dvd.

it upsets me but at the same time i can see how the creators were trying to show that the other seasons were in the past and that this new season was going in a new direction almost making it a completely new show. i would have preferred a new season with her interning over the summer at the fbi and then back to college. but i would have taken anything in season 4. the best thing about veronica mars for me was finding it by accident. my sister asked me to tivo it for her(during season one), and i did and i was bored one night, watched it and was totally hooked.

it upsets me but at the same time i can see how the creators were trying to show that the other seasons were in the past and that this new season was going in a new direction almost making it a completely new show. i would have preferred a new season with her interning over the summer at the fbi and then back to college. but i would have taken anything in season 4. the best thing about veronica mars for me was finding it by accident. my sister asked me to tivo it for her(during season one), and i did and i was bored one night, watched it and was totally hooked.
I think it had more to do with ratings than anything else. My guess is that if Rob Thomas had it his way, he would have continued the show as it was. But, he probably thought it would have a better chance at lasting with the new format.

Well, really that's for all the fucks who think she just appeared out of nowhere and went on Heroes and starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Me and my ex just started this show tonight
I like it so far. Weird, offbeat but, completely original and really well done

I found out about it about three weeks ago. I had no idea what Veronica Mars was about or who was in it; I just heard it was good (mostly from folks in AP). Best thing I ever did was download the pilot, At the same time, it almost feels like the worst thing I've ever done devoting all that time to three seasons and having all these questions.

Kristen Bell is on the cover of Cosmo this month! yay! I'm waiting for the DVDs to go down and I'll re-watch the whole thing again, although I have already when they aired the entire season on the "W" network. So brilliant, I wish it was still on!
So I've heard a ton of good things about this show, but I'm still holding off. Over here it's shown on Living TV, which happens to also feature such stellar programming as Will And Grace, Oprah and America's Next Top Model.
Is there anywhere online I can check out the first episode to see what it's like?

There is a clip on this site. Its the scene that won me over.

I forget the name, but it is a remake of a show from New Zealand about a family of criminals. KBell is set to play the daughter and rumors are saying Susan Surandon as the mom who wants to the family to stop their crime-ridden ways.

Just checked out the pilot and you were right, this show is awesome. Reminds me of the Buffy days for some reason.
Anyway, they aren't on sale here in the UK so I'm gonna have to import the first season which kind of sucks. But still, can't wait to see the rest of the season.
