test screening, new movie hasnt' come out yet. starring Dmitri Martin. Almost Famous + Across the Universe + Brokeback Mountain = Taking Woodstock.

Taking Woodstock - 8/0.

Quick Synopsis: Focus Features. It's a movie about Eliot Tiber, the person responsible for allowing Woodstock to happen in his town. It's a movie about what it took to bring the musical festival to the small Catskill town, and the life transformation that Eliot and his parents go through as the festival goes through them. Eliot and his parents run a motel, and are the main lodging area for most of the festival promoters. As the festival is being organized and built, the family starts to learn more about themselves and eachother, as the festival brings out the best of them.

Review and overall feel for the film: NOTE!!!!! THIS IS NOT A COMEDY! I know this may sound shocking, but yes, it is a Dmitri Martin leading movie, but its NOT a comedy at all. This is EXTREMELY important to remember, because his character isnt trying to be clever or funny. He cries, has homosexual relations, and is really subtle throughout the film. With that said, as a big fan of his, it was really hard to grasp his character in this movie. He did a wonderful job and his acting isnt that bad, but boy was it hard to take him seriously.

The film itself is told in a very Ang Lee sort of way....long shots of the scene, and really long establishing scenes to boot. It's a character driven movie as the movie is focused entirely on Eliot Tibers perspective. There are a lot of loose ends never talked about, but thats because Eliot Tiber doesnt see them. It's not directly from his point of view, but he does have to be present in order for the audience to see it. But this is a problem for the film because it starts to drag at times. You see all of these new characters constantl, and everything you think that they are going to become central to the story, they dissappear from the movie. Also, it takes a REALLY LONG time to understand the purpose of the film. Like I had no idea what was the goal of this film...although in the end it DOES start to make itself evident.

It's really a homage piece about woodstock....but mostly about the town and its town people. Like this isnt about the bands, the music, or the creation of woodstock. Its about everything else that went to it.

It was really original in terms of what it was about. It was very beautiful at times and the supporting cast was awesome. Liev Schrieber as a cross dresser was actually really funny. It was funny at parts, but not Dmitri.

I reccomend this movie for the serious movie goers and for your parents. I sat through a focus group after the film, and noticed that adults really liked the nostalgia of the film as it really addreses a lot of aspects of upstate NY life (in which im familiar with too since I spent my childhood there).

the movie comes out in late August of 2009 so you'll see more about it soon enough.

Taking Woodstock - 8/10.

I was excited to finally see a trailer was this film, to see how they were planning on marketting it...and it was a pretty accurate portrayal of the film.

I saw this movie like two months ago, and it was a very nice film overall. The acting from all the actors were awesome and Demetri Martin was shockingly right on the money. Mind you this isnt a comedy and Demetri Martin doesnt play a funny character. So he's acting serious the whole time, which took me a great deal to get used to. He's has a homosexual sex scene in the film...so being a fan of his for so long as a comedian...that scene took me by surprise.

The problem with the film was that it didnt stay on focus for a lot of the film..which I guess was due to the fact that most of hte movie was from Demetri's perspective...but with such little back story, and a large plethora of characters....there were some moments of hte film that seemed unneccesary and unconnecting. In the version of the movie I saw...theres very little music in the film, which is shocking in a film about woodstock...but I saw a rough cut so im sure they'll add it later. The movie isnt great, but the mood of the film was superbly set and made anyone who grew up in upstate new york really feel nostalgic. Like if you have any parents that grew up in the northeast, they would eat this film up.

It's a light-hearted drama, not a comedy (staring funny man Demitri Martin). There were a couple of scenes that were way too long and dragged out...and there were a lot of characters that seemed to have dissappeared in the movie for one reason or the other. I highly reccomend it, but this isnt some classic like almost famous etc.

I wish I could tell ya. I was in a focus group after the film and most of the audience (many adults 40+) said that this was a very accurate portrayal of the expereince of woodstock in the towns.

this isnt a movie about woodstock.

its a movie about a little bungalo that was used as a hotel during woodstock.

Didn't he play Melchior in Spring Awakening while it was on Broadway? I think I might be confusing him with someone else

From what I understand, the trailer is pretty misleading. I didn't even know the movie is mostly about Demetri Martin's character coming out of the closet and defying his parents until I read about it today. Maybe I'm just slow though.
