after you convince me it is
I'm jsut asking questions. I really want to be a Christian, but I can't be something that I think is a lie.
The Catholic Church had been telling their subjects that the bible is litearlly true-entirely- for the better part of the last 2,000 years. Now it says the bible isn't mean to be taken literally. Did God suddenly decide that the Bible isn't his word?

Hey guess what, the Catholic Church doesn't speak for all of Christianity, they just think they do. If you're looking for relaxed Christianity open to interpretation, check out Anglican faiths like Episcopalian.

i'm probably going to sleep now...but i'll throw this at you since you seen a little misinformed
you have to be christian to be catholic, you do not need to be catholic to be christian...that's a big point you need to get
Yes, the catholic church is going more and more towards the religious truth in the bible than claiming it is fact. i grew up catholic and realized i don't agree with most of the church. the ideas are good, but humans on power trips for thousands of years have fucked it all up. so i moved laterally to just christian. i think a lot of people have done that recently which has made the church examine the bible with a broader prespective.
but to simplify, if you're going to believe in God or Jesus based soley on what the church says, you're not thinking right...it's something you'll feel or not. from where you're coming from, if you really wanted to, i'd check out non-denominational beliefs, they're much more liberal and usually make more sense.

I can't, but if you have faith then you don't need to question it. Its one of those things that when you are dead if its fake you won't know it, so where is the harm?

Bingo. Matt, you should come to my church. It's right next to the beltway, the exit for Route 1, stay to the right, you can see it to the side from the exit ramp.

Faith in god is so dumb. That's why I'm an atheist. I'm not blind like those Christians who willingly accept things without proof.
Proof of god's non-existence? Oh, I have none. Just a gut feeling I have.

Obviously it isn't a big lie, a historical jesus has been confirmed by Jewish and roman historians. The ONLY big question in the bible is whether you believe in the resurrection or not.
Yep - Lord, Liar or Lunatic.

i dont like christianity, or the way its conducted. but i know for a fact within me that there is a God, or a higher power that surrounds us and that we cannot see or ever expect to fully understand. I know this because I have felt it, inside me. I have heard him speak, not in the literal sense...but people that have been confronted by God know what im talking about. its nuts.
Hell, we cant even understand everything on planet Earth. Why then should we ever expect to fully grasp the context of a creator and all his/her/its (lol) ways.
I have my beef with the bible, and all that it says, but that doesnt mean I should just stop looking for truth in God. The bible is like a gateway to get more into touch with our spiritual side. A book to keep us thinking and keep us questioning our actions. Most christians i meet now are unfortunately so out of touch from the reality and they take things WAY to literally...its sad and so wrong. Just trust it, and roll with it. Dont LOOK for it constantly because thats like looking for your keys when you lsot them and you always find it when your not looking. Same thing applies here. It looks for you just as much as you look for them...and in the end when you least expect and IF your ready for it. It will be known to you.
theres my ramble. :P that prolly makes no sense. sorry. lol

you can't take the bible literally...it contradicts itself. In the book Genesis, the Creation story where it takes God 7 seven days to create heaven and earth, etc. Well one version said that He created humans first and then all the animals and plants. In the same book, of the same bible it states later that He created animals and plants first and humans afterwards. Look it up if you don't believe me, but it is true.
Plus if you take the Bible literally then what version is the correct version....there are hundreds or even thousands of different translations of the bible. Which one is the correct translation?
Also you know how Mary is called the Virgin Mary. Well scholars are now saying that the word in latin for virgin could have also meant beautiful, which would have made more sense. You can't trust the entire Bible for what it is because we don't even know if we have the correct translations for it.
Oh and by the way I took a class on religion this semester in college and this is why I know all of this stuff

If there is on thing I wish critics of the bible would realise, it is that it's historical accuracy is irrelevant, and does not disprove anything.

I agree. Although when it comes to stories such as Noahs Ark it can help a tiny bit :)
