Tim has health problems too, at one of their shows I was at he had to basically step back and it became a Lars Frederickson show. (that felt weird to say since my name is also Tim)

I've always felt that this man's talent has been underappreciated just because he's in a "punk" band.

One of the truly amazing bass players alive today.

That really sucks. My prayers are with him, his family, and the entire Rancid family. I didn't know Lars had back problems. Rancid are an amazing band that have influenced so many bands that I listen to today. I don't think there's one band I listen to that doesn't count Rancid as an influence. Well maybe Bright Eyes, but I'm not sure.

I feel somewhat sorry for the guy as cancer does suck hardcore and I hope he fights through this but the guy did smoke. Here's hoping this helps to wise some people up so they can avoid the same thing.

i dont know if anyone has mentioned this yet but lung cancer is one of the most deadly (and hardest to treat) forms of cancer. i wish him the best.

This sucks ass. I got to meet matt at warped tour a couple years ago and he was one of the nicest guys ever and in one of the best bands of all time. (not to mention a fucking insane bassist.) I also got to see him play with Social D. a few months ago and he was so awesome.

man. cancer sucks. im tired of people around me getting it. its sad because its people who just don't deserve it. Yeah, sure they smoked or they drank...or whatever...but regardless no one deserves to deal with the way cancer just takes over and its treatments are brutal too.

On a lighter note, has anyone had the experience of the Maxwell Murder solo live and been really really close to where you can watch Matt? Holy SHIT, it was practically a pinnacle of my life! He plays half of it with a pick and the other half with his fingers. I almost cried after watching that because it was so incredible. Then a fat crowd surfer landed on me and slammed me into the rail and cracked my sternum, thus ending my bliss. Unnecessary bit, sorry.

p.s. Ditto to everyone else's sentiments. I hope he can beat this.

I got 'and out come the wolves' back in 95 or 96 and my life has never been the same...

id feel terrible, and it is terrible. But again like i said you kinda know the risks involved when you are smoking, its everywhere, theres no way you cant know. I just dont understand why people still do it when they know they have such a high risk of going through something as painful as lung cancer. if it were me id want to avoid it at all costs! Nobody should have to go through that.. Good luck to him and I wish him the best! :(

why exactly are they a 'fucking prick'? i dont think anyone would post something as juvenile as 'well thats what you get for smoking', but if we're honest this is just one of the several consequences and, although i appreciate that everyone can do exactly what they like (i have nothing against smokers at all), if something like this happens there's absolutely no way they can say that they havent entirely done it to themselves. i think the point should be made that smoking is essentially one of the many things the world would be better without. the habit begins almost exclusively because of the image and its just sad that people end up becoming so ill because of something that was ultimately so shallow. not that this makes it any less tragic, it's awful that anyone would have to go through this and i wish him the very best.

There are a lot of people who have smoked and quit and feel so stupid for having smoked and still get something awful. No one ever believes it will happen to them, especially people who are older and have been smoking since before any warnings came out.

Yes, people know the risks so stating the obvious is just rude and insensitive. Bottom line, the man needs positive thoughts and prayers, not judgments or anonymous condemnations.

This happens to people all the time and everytime you hear about it you of course give them your prayers and thoughts but it always makes me wonder what the fuck is going on. What keeps people smoking...why does it even exist?

It's like when someone you love ends their life...they knew what they were doing and you hate them for it....but only because you loved them so much.

Operation Ivy and Rancid are the reasons I listen to punk today. Spending time in the East Bay scene in the 90's, guys like Matt Freeman and Tim were Gods. My best wishes with him and his family.
