Hi there, just need some advice on buying USB Audio/ Midi Interfaces.
I study Music Tech at College and we use Edirol UA-25's, so I want to get something similar for home-use but at a cheaper price. Are there any decent and reasonabley priced brands, preferably with 2 mic inputs and is it worth looking into buying like a used one off ebay or something?

What's your budget ?

You won't find much for cheaper than that... I doubt you'll find anything for under $150 new. I always recommend buying used gear, though.

Definitely search around on eBay, I got my M-Audio MobilePre for like $90 new on there last year around this time (on Musician's Friend it's $150 new).

Your best bet if you want to get into music would be to buy an Apple Mac computer and to start using the Logic software line. If you just want to do some casual amateur recording you can buy Logic Express and do a lot with it. And then if you decide you want to go a little further you can get Logic Pro. Logic Pro is literally what professionals use to record the music you listen to every day, and if you are going into any field of art, even at an amateur level, your best bet is to get a Mac.

Except for the majority of studios that use Pro Tools. I'm not knocking Logic, in fact I use Logic and really like it, but I definitely wouldn't call it the industry standard. However, it is a good DAW that doesn't have a very steep learning curve.

Thanks, but I'm not actually looking for software as I use cubase and reason mainly, nor do I have the money to buy a Mac xD ( As much as i wish I could )
Any advice on the Tascam interface?

Not sure what your budget is, but the the protools mbox mini is great. pretty cheap too($250ish). and that will give you protools for PC or Mac. AND it is the industry standard. THe only downside is it has only one input.

I'll be selling my whole recording setup around March for about $1800. I have a digi 002R, Mackie ONYX preamp(ive only used twice and is worth $1100) and some mic's. PM me if anyone is interested. The stuff will probably go on ebay(and the classifieds here) eventually if a friend doesn't buy it first.

Cool thanks, had a look at the Mbox mini and i''m no expert, so some the inputs and stuff make no sense to me xD But If i want to record with 2 mics at once, do I need 2 XRL inputs, or can I plug one straight into the line-ins with an adaptor or whatever.(Sorry I'm not down with the tech lingo)

If you wanted 2 mics at once you could run one into the Line-In jack, you would just need an XLR to 1/4" cable. Not sure if there is any loss in quality that way, I wouldn't see why there would be, but someone else here might know.

You could only do that if you had a mic made for it, or else the levels would be way off since a line in and xlr in have different impedance.

If you want to record to mic you definitely want two pres with xlr inputs.

i got the lambda audio interface by lexicon... it works really well and it's only 150 bucks!

it's got 2 line inputs and 2 mic inputs

it's really simple (just plug in via usb) and it comes with cubase recording software.

i'd definitely recommend it

Does it have to be USB or can it be Firewire?

That's the interface you used, right? Apparently there are two factory resealed ones that the price is "too low to show" but it's under $189.99. Call them up and see how much it is.
