View Full Version : I'm gonna bitch about DVDs and digital copies for a minute

I guess this is spurred by the fact I bought the 2-disc edition of Hancock for the digital copy, which doesn't even work on my MacBook, and is the same reason I didn't buy the 2-disc for Step-Brothers because I already knew the digital copy wouldn't transfer into my MacBook (I know there are ways around it, but I didn't feel like dealing with it). Which brings me to my point.

Why do we, the customer, have to pay extra for a digital copy? Why can't the DVD just be ripped automatically into our computer just like CDs? It's not like we have to pay extra for a CD so that we can have it ripped onto our computer. I mean, you buy the DVD, it should already be able to be ripped onto a computer.

Maybe I'm just ignorant and don't know all the details and reasons why it can't be, but I just wanted to get on my soapbox. Thoughts?

Well, it's obvious what the problem is.

You bought Hancock.

DVD ripping should be as simple and easy as CD ripping in my opinion, but Apple won't take the initiative as long as movies are selling on iTunes.

And I loved Hancock.

Besides Hancock possibly sucking (it's netflix'd so I can't comment, yet), why won't they work on your macbook? I haven't had any problems getting any digital copies working on mine

Somewhat related note:

Wanted was atrocious.

It's because it's distributed by Sony.

Ahhh they seem to have major problems w/ stuff like that. Sony films on the instant stream for the xbox 360 don't work, either.

Yep, Sony only lets their digital copies work on PC's, PSPs and PS3s

I fucking hate when companys do this compatibility bs. Don't they realize by making it more difficult for the consumers, it only hurts themselves in the long run?

Sony is fucking horrible when it comes to DRM issues. You should look up if there's a Mac site to download your digital copy because I know that they've done that for a few releases.

another shitty thing about the hancock digital copy, if i have my facts straight. in the two disc special edition you bought, doesn't that include the theatrical version of the film and the unrated version? from my understanding, the digital copy is only of the theatrical version.

i could be thinking of a different movie, but i'm pretty sure it was hancock. even if it isn't, that's a fucking lame thing to do anyways.

also, you would think sony would get their shit together by now. it was about three years ago when they released a string of cds that were crashing comps when they were attempting to rip them. that was a big deal, but yet they haven't really learned.

I tried mactheripper... or something like that - and I still had a lot of trouble with it. There's gotta be an easier way (other than downloading)

I have a few of these digital copy discs but I never use them. If I actually wanted to watch a movie on my computer why would I go through the extra trouble when I can just pop the regular DVD in the disc drive.

My main complaint with digital copy discs is the recent fad of releasing 3 discs sets. Since they never have a regular 2 disc version, I now have to pay 10 extra dollars for a disc I don't need.

I agree about the computer part, it's more for my iPod Video and/or iPhone when I go on trips.

I like digtial copies if they work on my iPod touch. The Nightmare Before Christmas did. But when I got 21 it wouldn't work because it was distributed by Sony who are only interested in having their DVDs work on their own products. It's a little ridiculous although I own a PSP and could transfer it over. I just use my iPod a LOT more often so I think it would be more convenient to have it on there.

I bought the Step Brothers 2-Disc and surprised to find out that the second disc just wasn't a digital copy and that it actually had special features on it. Considering how most movies with 'Digital Copies' either take up a full disc (for example: Juno) and are then advertised as two-disc copies, I was happy that all the special features weren't thrown onto the first disc like most Digital Copy films.

What I hate is when something is promoted as '3-Disc Collector's Edition' or '2-Disc Special Edition' and then the second/third discs are the digital copy. It's what happened with Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. I can understand that from a marketing point of view that the companies want to make it seem like you're getting a lot for your money, but when the reality falls down to that you're only getting two discs and a DC, I get a little pissed off.

Disney gets my complaints on the extra 10 dollars bit.

I fucking loved Wall-E, but I'm not spending $34.99 on another disc of special features and a useless digital copy when I can buy the single disc for $21.99. I saw that Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian got the same shaft, so I'm guessing all of their big films are going to consist of the $21.99 single-disc with limited features and the $34.99 three-disc with special features and a digital copy.

I guess I'll just wait until the price goes down to pick up Wall-E, though I doubt that will happen.

Sounds like you could use a program called Handbrake. Free app for your Mac that will rip them in the right format.

I purchased 3 disc Wall-E for $20 during the Deep Discount sale.

I noticed that Disney prices their 3 discs higher than other companies. MRSP for Wall-E is $40 while Hellboy II, Incredible Hulk, etc are $35.

Awesome avatar. And DVDS are starting to piss me off more and more lately with all this digital copy/Blue Ray nonsense. Unless I'm romanticizing the past, a lot of dvds used to be like 10-15 bucks their first week at Best Buys. Now they're 19.99 when they're on sale. Hogwash.

DVDs, at least one disc's, are still only between 15 and 18 bucks the first week at release at Best Buy.

Because movie studios believe the only way to stop piracy is to hurt the legitimate customers as well. Funny thing is any movie I'd want, I'd buy on DVD straight away, if only for the extras. They aren't usually ripped with movies, even in DVD-R format, so they have a selling point right there. But no, apparently if we buy a DVD we're going to rip it and upload it and pirate the shit out of it. Naturally.
