From MTV News (www.mtv.com):
Emo boys now have a comic hero to cry for. "Emo Boy," coming out in June, is about a tortured and bullied outsider who dances awkwardly, gets thrown out of his favorite band's fan club, ineptly attempts suicide and loses at dodgeball. "It's about being alienated and alienating yourself," creator Steve Emond said, "about silly stories and first loves (and a lack thereof) and finding yourself and growing up and all that good stuff." In the first issue, Emo Boy is recruited by fellow classmates to write a song for their band, but the cute blonde singing his words screws him up. A preview is available on www.slgpublishing.com

i am sorry, but emo is really not something that should be as marketed as it is. Really the whole movement helped me get through my youth, providing a personal support system as i made my way through the trials of high school. The music that this comic is using as its inspiration means something more to certain people. To see it have a price tag attached to it ($30 dollar Fall Out Boy Club?) just rips apart any personal meaning the music had to the kids that really know what that stuff means. It disrespects the entire emo culture, not to mention the meaning of music as a whole. Music is something that comes from the heart not a price tag.

"They are right about one thing...You could use a little...INSPIRATION!" Top notch writing there guys. Art sort of reminds me of Mr. Blank by Christopher Hicks, or at least a poor man's version of it. Not bad on the art, writing is rather cheesy.

Actually, the term "emo" originated as a derogatory term for the more "emotionally" lyrical (introspective, sentimental, etc.) hardcore emerging in DC in the 80s. The hardcore band and kids thought the new movement was stupid and created the word "emo" to mock it.
failingwithease
05/14/05, 09:38 PM
So...
This pretty much makes me want to stab myself in the eye.
The art isn't bad. I'd be more drawn to the writing if I didn't think it was a desperate attempt of mockery. Especially how it just goes right out there and actually says, "I'm emo." That's like holding up a tampon, pointing at your vagina and saying, "Ohmahgawd, I'm a feminist." Fucking Emo Boy. Someone needs shot for this.

As funny as I think this is and as ready as I'd be to roll with it normally, it kind of sucks that he'll "ineptly attempt suicide." Judging by the wording, I'd say that means it'll be played off comically, and if something like this is going to be mass-marketed....ehhh. :/

I am sad. You know, things really do suck. I've been screwed over time and time again. now when I try to design stuff for bands, either they don't pay or they dn't like it. So here I am up at 1 AM on a Saturday night designing, but where does it get me? I'll never be as good as Asterik, not without help, or an escape from having to babysit everyday. I'm sick of watching these damn kids. Design is both a love and a hate these days. Like the 10,000 bands everyone talks about, there are 10,000 designers to go with those, and like those 10,000 bands everyone talks about, the 10,000 designers suck, including my lame ass. Woe is me.
HopelessDeath
05/14/05, 10:17 PM
who really cares? It's MTV. Unless some of you go watch it and go to the site and it ruins you viewing pleasure.
Somehow I just find it so pathetic its hilarious, that and because people get all defensive when mainstream TV dives into their secluded world of emo, making them misunderstood once more, but doesn't everyone have a varying perspective of what emo really is anyways?
Just laugh at the futile attempt of trying to comprehend a genre in the form of a shotty comic. Maybe Good Charlotte or Simple Plan will make a guest appearence in it and homo porno music plays in the background.
Who knows?! OMG

I dunno. I think it's pretty fuckin funny. I think everyone is getting their panties in a bunch for no reason. It's obviously a fucking joke. It's obvious MTV had nothing to do with it. Quit your crying and suck it up. emo is such a good name for a genre. so totally awesome.
"We are really tired of those labels and questions," says guitarist, co-founder and producer Rodriguez-Lopez. "Concept album? How can any huge project that takes up most of your life for a year not have a concept? Prog? How can any innovative, forward-thinking art or music not be progressive? It reminds me of when I first heard the label "Emo," which was the most ridiculous label ever. How can anything you put your heart and soul into not be emotional?" -Omar from Volta on labels. Preach the fuck on.

Not completely true. Supposedly, its origins lie in a mid-80's interview with Ian MacKaye who was asked to try and describe the new movement his band (Fugazi) as well as others were founding at the time.
Dashboard Confessional is not an emo band.
Unfortunately, they are, but that's likely attributed to how nü-emo isn't as widely recognized as nü-metal yet.

A preview is available on www.slgpublishing.com

thank you for the link to that site...his photography is amazing. I want to abandon my life and travel the world taking pictures. Cool shit
Abandon life? Hardly. It's pretty expensive to travel the world .. my take is that he has some pretty nice bank. Don't be jealous.

this is awesome.
you guys should stop being such pussies and stop fighting over what emo is. categorization is not a neccessity in music. i'm sure you guys think that it is, but it isn't. so, quit being little fucking dickheads and stick to the fact that everything is music, and it doesn't need to fall into a certain deliniation to be listenable.
and let MTV do whatever they want. If you don't like it, don't fucking turn the channel on. They aren't exploiting "emo" or anything, because since MTV doesn't "know what emo is", then it doesn't make a fucking difference. everyone should embrace their ability to end their life with a pillow.
The End.

Well i love how your name makes sense..actually no..it doesnt..grow balls and then you can talk.
What does my name have to do with me apparently not having any balls? You must be mentally retarded. I'm pretty sure my girlfriend enjoys playing with them too, other wise she wouldn't. You're a loser. Stop getting mad because no one plays with your yet to have dropped testicles.
I don't know what I said to offend you before my previous statement, but hey, you must be real tough starting an arguement over the internet over nothing, huh? All the power to you, cunt.

Actually, the term "emo" originated as a derogatory term for the more "emotionally" lyrical (introspective, sentimental, etc.) hardcore emerging in DC in the 80s. The hardcore band and kids thought the new movement was stupid and created the word "emo" to mock it.
gotcha, ive never heard that before. now i know. most kids who have described it to me have just said "oh its just called emo because its emotional" and im like...oh....and other music isn't? =P.

i didn't expect this to cause much controversy, but allow me to step in.
steve's an incredibly good friend of mine, and i've read older versions of this comic, as well as samples of the new ones. it doesn't completely mock the emo genre, it's more of an undertone that helps the story along. it's not like he spends every page saying "BLACK GLASSES LOL! *CRIES*".
mtv hasn't influenced this comic at all and it's not completely stereotyping the emo genre. i wasn't that crazy about the idea at first either, but steve has a great sense of humor and i ended up loving it.
/my two cents.

it's funnier that way. but clearly you're ignorant, so it's useless trying to argue any points further.
