This is exactly what my older brother did. Figured out he couldn't live in poverty for the rest of his life.

I definitely got sick of waiting tables. Fuck serving the public! haha. Anyway, I'm going to Illinois Institute of Art for Visual Communications which is like graphic design but a little more focused on the visual aspect of it. I'm starting jan 12. Time to grow the fuck up.

I didn't start till 7 years after. It took me an entire semester to re-adjust to everything again (like homework and teachers telling me what to do). I'm glad I went back though.

Good for you. Doesn't really matter when you do it.

Sometimes I wish I took a break after high school before university. It would have saved me the two years in tuition I paid to figure out what I actually wanted to go to school for.

Awesome, it's better now than never to learn.

Two years after high school I'm heading off to a university as a first timer as well. Sure, I could have been maybe half way done with college by the time I end up starting, but I had absolutely no clue what I wanted to accomplish and major in two years ago. Now that I had time to experience different things and give it a lot of thought, I now know what I want to do with my life; I have motivation. I think that is alot better than dragging yourself through college not knowing why you are there or what you want to do. So anyways, good for you! I hope all is well with your schooling.

Well, I am the exact opposite. I graduated high school, went right to college, and then straight to law school. When my loans are paid off, I plan on going back for a PhD in Business Administration.

I commend you on making your decision. You will never regret a good education. My mom is 61 and still thinks about finishing her degree every single day. Good Luck!

One of my ap teachers told our class that the best protection against a crappy economy is a good education. I say, go for your doctorate!

i think that 'what the hell you did to (your)self' was realize you needed more than you could have without an education. and, for that, you should be happy.

Hahaha I hear you man. I graduated high school in 2003 and went to college that fall at a community college for one semester before saying screw this. I've been playing music ever since. I've always wanted to go back because I like to learn and like the classroom environment. It is a bit unsettling that I am 24 years old and would be a freshmen if I went back to college haha.

I know college is shoved down our throats and burned into our little brains very early on but now being 24, when I see a senior in high school, or someone that is 18, I am amazed at how young they are. When I was 18 I thought I was an adult and knew everything. Granted I feel like I was a little more mature than my average peers, but still. 18 is no age to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life, unless you are dead set on knowing what you want to do. I think having some real world/real life experience is the best thing you can do right after high school. Sure, take the loans out, go spend 2 years thinking you want to major in psych or communications then realize it's not what you want to do. Maybe that is what the entire college experience is for.

The scary thing is, there isn't hardly a single job I want. I have always had the Lloyd Dobbler, "Not buy anything sold or processed" mentality.

SOOOO. Don't feel down on yourself. Goodluck!

If I were to go to school, I would probably major in History, because I like History, or Political Science, and possibly double major in German, or at least a minor, because I like the language and culture. Now what would I do with that degree??...

I just want to be a musician or join sort of government law enforcement agency. There is absolutely nothing else I want to do.

I was wondering why you were in Okinawa for the longest time, now it makes sense. Went with the ol' Semper Fi four year program?

I graduated high school in 2006 and took a year and a half off. When I started college Spring '08, I failed about half of my classes because I didn't try as hard as I should have. Fall '08 I went part time. I finally kicked it in gear Spring '09 and I am finally a sophomore.

I am kicking myself because I have a guaranteed 3+ years left, whereas my friends I went to high school with are graduating next Spring (2010). I will be 23/24 when I graduate, which is still young but I have all these life goals I really wanted to accomplish before that age.

*Iwakuni

and yeah, I had to sign a five year contract because of my MOS (1+ years of school and training). the educational benefits are so good but sometimes I feel a little out of place in the Marine Corps. I'm not the most motivated, gung-ho person out there and I'm definitely not into "killing bodies", "eating babies", or throwing puppies.

whatever though, three years to go.

Same situation here, a little age difference. I'm glad I'm not the only one, though I feel your pain. Most of my high school friends are already graduating this year. I can't stand it when they ask me, "What have you been doing with your life?", but at least they make me realize how stupid I've been by not concentrating on a good post-high school education. Right now, I'm just trying to get my life together.

i went to junior college for about 3 years not knowing what i was doing... then transferred to a major university at age 22. earned my bachelors when i was 24. can't find a job in this piss poor economy, so i'm waiting tables. i'm 25 and thinking about going back to school to earn my master's, by then maybe the economy will be better.

but, i actually loved being 22 around a bunch of 18 year old freshman sluts. buy them some alcohol and they will suck your dick.

I'm 24. I graduated a year and a half ago. Moved to South America cause I didnt want to get a job. I just moved back and am waiting tables. The plan is to get into grad school in about a year from now. In the mean time I'm paying off some loans.

Better to wait until you know exactly what you want to do, unlike me. Four different colleges, and loads of loans I'll be paying back for a good portion of my adult years.

I'm on a similar boat as the original poster. I'll just be going back to college in the fall and I'm 22 years old now. I went for a year and a half right after high school (part-time in my last, miserable semester) and didn't know what I wanted to do. My GPA dropped substantially. Especially being at a university, that was a bad decision on my part to go to college and, after one semester, pretty much becoming disenchanted with everything and not wishing to do anything with my life as far as the conventional jobs go. I've been playing music since I was 15 so a lot of my free-spirit mentality is a result of that. Although I feel like I could accomplish great things with music, most of these bands out there never beat the odds. The ones I admire and respect do but it's got to be a team effort, too. I can't be the only one wanting to keep pushing forward and it's not like I wish to live the in-the-van/broke/hungry/dirty/playing small venues every night for little or nothing lifestyle. If music doesn't work out in a band sense, I'm still looking to help other bands and possibly be a studio drummer on top of that. Somethin' I can do from home without being torn away from my family all the time...

As far as school goes, I'm fascinated with history, political science/law, and creative writing. I will be taking classes in everything I wish and focus on my ultimate major and minor in the next year or so. I just need to narrow things down some more.
