View Full Version : Explosions/DestroyYou
Can anybody recommend a few good bands in the same vein as Explosions In The Sky or This Will Destroy You? You know... the same kind of epic beautiful guitar music. It's very relaxing. Any good recommendations?

yeah just because they got a name drop in pineapple express doesn't make them uncool. And i challenge you to find any article about post-rock that doesn't involve godspeed, because whether it's obvious or not they have EVERYTHING to do with post-rock. When they get heavy they can be just as intense as Mogwai or TWDY, and when they get soft they can be as chill as explosions or, well mogwai. And that's not even including how well they can manipulate moods with only noise. So go ahead and say that they don't need to be mentioned. You're kind of wrong. Talk to anyone in any of those bands mentioned here and i guarantee that they cite godspeed as an influence. Or look at the liner notes of a cd, or on their myspace.
i'm not even really sure what point you've been trying to make, actually.

what the fuck are you talking about? i already made my point in this thread. i'm not as to what point YOU are trying to make. as previously stated, the OP was asking for bands in the vein of twdy and eits, not "post-rock" bands. godspeed are nothing like twdy and eits, hence they are irrelevant to this thread.

well, like i said before, they ARE similar to eits AND twdy to a certain extent. all three are noisy. all three can be very heavy (for explosions, think birth and death of day). all three can be very chill. all three are predominantly instrumental. when godspeed actually plays music, they sound like these bands. which qualifies them to be mentioned in a thread such as this, because the guy asked for similar bands. i'm referencing this off of F# A# and Yanqui, just to be clear.

no. they don't. really at all. OP asked for people in the Explosions vein of post-rock, which is a fairly specific scene that g!ye does not fit into at all (they fit into their own scene of post-rock). you're just name dropping an important band for no reason here. now if they said "hey i want some instrumental music bands", then totally throw out this band because they were good. but they didn't say that.

ok that makes sense. godspeed doesn't write rock songs. eits and twdy do. but personally, i have never met someone who likes explosions that doesn't also like godspeed. thats because they are similar, they make similar music in the post-rock genre, regardless of what "scene" they are in within the genre. that is why i recomended them.
it doesn't matter one way or another if OP listens to them, but it would make sense if he did. it's irrelevant whether godspeed is a carbon-copy of explosions, they make the same kind of music to a certain extent. it wasn't a random or erroneous name drop.

what i'm saying is that although they aren't exactly the same, it's not blasphemy to mention them in the same sentence as explosions in the sky. you act like the two are so dissimilar that its absolutely ridiculous to even expect someone who likes one to like the other. its not like that. what i AM saying, is that this guy likes explosions, it is worth his while to at least give godspeed a fighting chance, because they deserve it, and whether you can admit it or not, they write similar sounding music, whether it be in the standard rock song format or not. so, you should love it. thank you. i love it, too.

Godspeed, Caspian, and sorta Mogwai are like the only ones worth comparing. Old Sigur Ros too maybe. But there are other post-rockish bands that take the genre to newer ground like Cloud Archive, Red Room Cinema, Junius, and Maybeshewill. Not all are completely groundbreaking, but at least they have something to offer other than the hundreds of soft-to-loud bands.

My only true foray into minimalism is Steve Reich, whom I'm sure you've heard of. Vinh might have some good rec's.

well we've had like, what 3 venues close in the past two weeks? it's ridiculous. what's stupid is you can legally have all ages shows here with booze if you just print tickets and sell them before hand (it's the except that allows the baseball teams to sell alcohol), but nobody wants to do that.

"genre 1 : a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content"
the fact that theyre in the same genre means theyre similar in their work. and i find dead flag blues quite relaxing thank you very much. oh wow. you can use a dictionary when it doesn't make sense in the context of our conversation.
We both agreed that they were similar to a degree, the thing is, i pointed out that the original poster was wanting music that they called relaxing. godspeed you black emperor is not relaxing music (and as a fan, you should realize that isn't their goal when it comes to music). more importantly, your logic justifies me posting grindcore and noise rock bands in a thread for someone who's saying they want to hear rock bands. grind/noise rock are parts of the big genre of rock, but that isn't what the person would be looking for.

Listening to Domkirke now. The first song is aight...the vocals can get a little overdramatic but they're nice towards the end when they're kind of buried in the mix. Second song is good so far (I'm only about halfway in.)
Gustavatron.

Mono is alright but they're so predicable and never change their formula.
They win at the formula!
I for one hope that Mono change nothing on the new album.

Neither are really all that similar to EITS/TWDY.
But good bands nonetheless.

Float is one of my favorites of this year. Just so good.
Those two are the only modern classical artists I'm intimately familiar with, but every time I seem to discover a new one, I fall in love. This Akira Kosemura is added to that list.

As far as neo-classical-esque stuff goes, Johann Johannsson is worth checking out. New album this year called Fordlandia is good shit. Glad you're enjoying Akira Kosemura as much as I do.
Also congrats on 8K haha.

Tough to say, first few times I listened to it was Overture/Departure but Light Dance/Light Dance (Home) are Shorebird are creeping up there. Each song works so well in an album format but each song is so diverse and different from one another. Honestly it's one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. How about you?

I can understand why they wouldn't be "in the same vein," they lean more towards Godspeed you! Black Emperor. Although, I think Godspeed you! Black Emperor should be considered in a genre of awesomeness of it's own.

Post-rock doesn't exist on a spectrum with one side being EITS and the other being GYBE. But if it did, I would argue that both DMST and GIAA would belong closer to the EITS side.

As of now, Light Dance/Light Dance (Home) are easily my favorites. But Smile and Overture/Departure are tops as well. Album is crazy good. Am I being hasty if I say it's one of the top 5 best albums I've heard in 2008?

Meh... I can see GIAA being nearer to EITS, but DMST has more experimentation and originality, leading me to compare them moreso to Godspeed. Musically, if EITS is point A, and Godspeed is B, DMST is point C, almost forming a triangle.

You make a valid point how I shouldn't be limiting the similarities to EITS and Godspeed. I guess one of the best things about post-rock is that it's not a very restricting genre and, for the most part, the bands have the freedom to what they please.

Can anybody recommend a few good bands in the same vein as Explosions In The Sky or This Will Destroy You? You know... the same kind of epic beautiful guitar music. It's very relaxing. Any good recommendations?
i'm not sure if you're like me or my friends but there really is no other instrumental bands we like as much as ETIS or TWDY. caspian is great and so is saxon shore. the only other band i could rank up with explosions or destroy (but i haven't seen them yet) is Giants.

The one you're getting is a collaboration with Japanese band Boris called Altar. Good album. Not very indicative of their sound though. The definitive Sunn O))) release is Black One for sure, if you want to get into this band then you absolutely have to get that. The one with the Gregorian chant is called Domkirke.

Like all the bands you listed minus Meet Me In St. Louis (who I've never listened to) plus Mihai Esdrich, Daturah (great fucking band, listen to Reverie - you'll love it) and Sept Malevolence. I'm listening to their albums back to back right now (damn term papers!) and I must agree. S/T is much mroe dynamic and it flows better and it just seems to pick up more than drag (with the exception of villas del refugio"

I dunno...I feel that on the s/t, they really tried to carve a niche for themselves, you know? Young Mountain was basically a collection of EITS b-sides. S/T was surely a progression. Also, I don't really feel anything when I listen to Young Mountain. This is more personal, but the climaxes, the crescendos...they're all way more emotional on S/T for me.
