movie buffs, help me choose the films I'll see at Sundance 09 - it's always a tough call on what's going to be good.

"Good hair" looks to be my favorite so far - Chris Rock makes a documentary about black people's hair

Here is a list of everything I saw, and my review to go along with it (brief):
We Live in Public - See this movie the day it comes out. It was the best movie I saw at the festival, and the best documentary I've seen in years. It will make you re-think the way you use technology in your life every day. Fascinating.
Dead Snow - Great horror flick and instant cult classic. Exactly what you expect it to be: a cheesy yet awesome horror movie with blood and gore. In the snow.
Glass House - The only bad movie I saw at Sundance. It's a documentary about children growing up in a third world country. Interesting, but I left the theatre not caring about any of the characters one bit
Black Dynamite - See this movie when it gets released. Hilarious cult-like film about a black hero named Dynamite. Very 70's and retro. And bad ass.
Toe to Toe - A movie about a black girl and white girl competing on a lacrosse team in Washington DC. Not at all what I was expecting - lots of unnecessary sex...almost to the point of eye-rolling. Decent.
Spread - The new Ashton Kutcher movie. Despite how much I hate him, it was the 2nd best movie I saw. He plays a homeless guy who goes to bars and goes home with rich women, and leech money/housing off of them. I loved it.
Thrilla in Manilla - Great documentary about the Ali/Frazer fight. Goes through the entire fued, interviews people close to both fighters, and shows some great footge.
Tyson - Documents the entire life and career of Mike Tyson, as told by him. He is a terrible speaker, but he goes into some really deep stuff. I liked it.

A movie about nazi zombies has to be good.

Wow man you got to see a bunch of movies I didn't get to see. Nice. I heard from a few people that Spread was no good. I didn't hear much about the others.
The films I saw were
500 Days Of Summer
Brooklyn's Finest
Lymelife
Prom Night In Mississippi
I Love You Philip Morris
The Carter (yep I actually saw the carter)
Standouts for me included 500 Days, Finest, and Lymelife. Prom Night was good and Philip Morris was decent. The Carter was not a good documentary and served no real purpose other than promoting Lil Wayne and showing the world how he is addicted to cough syrup.

You got the much better haul. What did you think of I Love You Philip Morris?
I Love You Philip Morris was not what I was expecting really. I went into it thinking it was going to be a drama and I was really worried it was going to be completely awkward and I didn't think Jim or Ewan would be able to pull it off. Luckily, when i saw the promo poster right outside the theater i realized I was going to see a comedy instead. Overall the film was a decent comedic movie, with heart. It's based on a true story and the characters are real, live people. I think Jim and Ewan did decent jobs, but neither were at the top of their game. Not to blame them, though because this movie is very different and it was probably very difficult to portray their characters. It was definitely awkward to watch in a lot of instances with all the touching, kissing, cuddling, etc. between the two. However, just as one might expect from a Jim Carey movie, there are many funny instances and the movie is rather entertaining. Ewan cracked me up with his lighter, more feminine-sounding Big Fish voice. When he started talking I was like hey it's Ed Bloom. Jim, in the less comedic moments was hard to take seriously. I guess honestly I just couldn't get into the characters for who they were and kept thinking about Jim and Ewan acting. Anyway, I just realized I wrote a lot without really saying much. Here's a review if you'd like to read it: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/film-reviews/film-review-i-love-you-phillip-morris-1003931806.story The film is worth checking out since it is a bold move and since it has an enjoyable cast, but I wouldn't waste your money on it if they ever figure out how to market this thing to theaters. Just wait for it to come to video, you won't be missing anything great in the mean time.
What'd you think of 500 Days of Summer?
Now 500 Days of Summer...there's nothing to bad to say about this one. I had no clue that this movie was going to be anything more than your standard romantic comedy. But damn, it was soooo much more. I think it caught everyone in the audience off-guard. No one expected how much they were going to connect with the characters.
Before my group went in this volunteer lady said something like "hey do you guys like Juno? Cause this is a lot like Juno and you will like this." Well after the movie, I can say that it was nothing like Juno and this lady only said that because it's quirky and off-beat. Anyway, the film was really really good. It took the romantic comedy genre and introduced it to some unique story-telling, truly meaningful and relatable characters and some really damn good comedy. The laughs are not cheaply gained through your random "hilarious" physical comedy where the guy gets hit in the head or something. Timing and the emotional connection to "Summer" and "Tom" was key to making this movie so good in so many ways. This movie was truly truly funny. And the characters were fantastic. Zooey was perfect for her role and Joseph Gordon-Levitt was perfect for his role. I have a lot of respect for Joseph Gordon-Levitt after this. I didn't know he could hold down a role so well. All in all, I have all the confidence in the world that you will like this movie. Chances are you will probably love it. This was the best movie I saw at Sundance, followed very closely by Brooklyn's Finest.
I hope this helps you guys. I'm no reviewer, but hopefully you got the gyst of what I was trying to say. I recommend down the road to check out, in addition to these movies, Lymelife and Prom Night In Mississippi and Brooklyn's Finest. Enjoy.
