View Full Version : Name Taken Announcement On Myspace

This was taken from Name Taken (http://www.nametakenmusic.com)'s Myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/nametaken):

"Well, well, well. Kind of a big announcement. June 11th at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA will be Name Taken's final show. We have thought long and hard over the past few months and decided it was the best thing for us to do. First, I want to say, "NO, we are not all fighting and wanting to punch each other and can't stand being in a band together anymore." Although I'm sure that would have been a good story (kind of like the "fight" with Maida - April Fools Joke). We are all still good friends and most of us will even be going to school together and will be making fun of each other constantly, which brings me to the real reason(s). A few of us want to go back to school and as many know, it is impossible or close to, to do that and be a full-time touring / struggling band at the same time. We also simply didn't have it in our hearts to do this sort of thing anymore. As much as we love and live on music, we were just ready to do something new. And some guy in the band (no names) is just a poker fanatic and lost all our money in one game (ok, that's not true). Ok, his name is Ryan and he is the poker master. The past few years have been pretty much amazing to say the least and we can't thank enough our families, friends and all of the people that supported us, befriended us or let us stay over at their sweet (or sometimes not so sweet) estates. So yeah, I guess that's it. Crazy. Anyway,s our last show will be at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, CA on June 11th with Maida and William Tell who used to be in Something Corporate (No! We never covered that "Konstatine" song. It wasn't us). Thanks so much to everyone and hopefully we'll meet up again someday... Name Taken. Out.

P.S. We will be playing two very special oldies at that show for some of you turds that wouldn't let them go

P.S.S. All we want to say is thank you to those of you who truly supported and believed in us. We love you and want to assure you that it is far from the end of the world. (I've already heard that from a few of you which worries us deeply) Please listen to something new, please replace us. We're sorry to disappoint some of you, but at the same time, e just could not finish a record good enough for ourselves an you. We had a fantastic time being Name Taken. Thank you for everything."

Seriously, I lost two of my favorite bands this year, Northstar and now Name Taken. Just after getting really into Hold On again too, so sad. Such an amazing album and I was so anticipating whatever they had in store next. Well, it's their right and decision to move on, so all I have to say is: I wish you all the best with whatever you get into next.

me too, it took me a while to get into at first but then i couldnt stop playing it, and just the last few weeks it's been back in my cd player and hasn't left. control is probably one of my favourite songs ever, i can listen to that song 100 times a day and every time it's still as awesome as the first. what shit news.

Boohooo. Whatever.

it surprises me that people in bands don't realize that touring is one of the biggest aspects of being in a band and that you will be doing that at least 80% if not more of the time. Let this be a lesson to people who want to be in bands, but don't like touring.

Good luck to them.

You know what would be great? If labels started paying their bands a weekly non-recouped wage. Label people are at home, sitting on the phone, working hard I admit, but if it weren’t for the bands the labels would not exist. If labels disappeared tomorrow there would still be bands. Bands tour, risk their lives for their fans, and who benefits? The labels, the management, the lawyers.... why? Because they don’t have to spilt profits like bands do. Labels have to pay their employees but they are also getting 85%+ of the bands record sales. Management wants 15% of your gross not net income as a band. Lawyers, come on they’re lawyers you know they are getting paid. Bands take what would be great for one person and spilt 4-5 ways. Now I’m not talking about bands like Foo Fighters, Creed, U2 etc. of course. I’m talking about Indie bands on Indie labels. Some Indie labels do struggle but we all know the ones that aren’t.

I’m just saying labels pay their employees.... isn’t the band the labels most important employee??? That without them they wouldn’t have a purpose to exist?? Maybe if they had consistent money coming in they wouldn’t feel the need to go back to school. I’m not anti-label, I’m just pro-band. It’s just a thought.

If you agree email you favorite indie label…drive thru, vagrant, militia, eulogy, victory etc….ask why they don’t? And then ask the owners how many square feet their homes are. I bet you’d be surprised of some of the answers. You know they aren’t living home with their parents.

Well...it's always a bands choice to get management or sign to a label. They're aware of the deal. If they wanted to they could fund everything themselves promote themselves and improve themselves but some bands are greatly benefited from having labels/management. It's the way the world works. You goto college get a degree and go into management/running a business/label you're bound to make more money than bands straight out of High School. A bit sad but true. If it was the easier rout to be in a band I think a lot more people would be doing it. I know I would. It's not particularly a lack of talent from me. It's the lifestyle/money that wasn't what I wanted. I want enough money to have a wife and children and be able to support them and myself and put my kids through college so they all can have a choice like I did.

EDIT: And apparently Name Taken want what they think is a better life for themselves by going to college and whatnot.

I am going to be completely honest. This band was ok, not bad but not great.. Also they have made the better decision to go to college. The probability of them being able to make a living as Name Taken didnt seem that promising.. They really werent very trendy so the likely hood of them blowing up like UnderOath or Mae doesnt seem that likely

Good luck to them in whatever they do

Very, very well put my friend. It is true. Still, in this day and age nothing can replace an education or that piece of paper. It sucks. I'm in school, and I'm not a dumb guy, but at this point it is old news. I'm no musician though. There are alot of bands to compete with though. This isn't the 1970s with a few bands out there. It's hard to become a rock n roll icon these days, it seems. The music business hasn't become watered down, it's overflowing, for better or for worse. To say he least, I agree with what you're saying.

Just a shame. And they're exit was so classy. Props to Name Taken for kicking ass. Not many bands know when it's time to throw in the towel and take the next step. Their actions are a real tribute to the quality of this band.

Good luck to them!

actually the dtr people aren't as rich as it may seem. they've got capital, but they don't really spend it on themselves. my band stayed at their NJ headquarters and it's just a townhouse in a failed retirement community. even indies as large as dtr don't have it "made." it's a hard world out there in the music industry.

you're complete lack of tact is amazing.

bands need to realize the following.
they need to record a record.
and then tour.
alot.

alot alot.

no shows. no dough.
it's that simple.

and how can anyone benefit / band / manger / lawyer / label / whatever
if a band isn't writing and recording and touring consistently?

but seriously.
i think your statement is straight up bullshit.

-
i do think bands are the center of all labels - obviously.
it's not rocket science.
-
it's the music industry.

INDUSTRY.

everyone wants to get big over night now.

remember basement shows?
or when shows were under 8 bucks?

i fucking do.

i've seen thursday, at the drive in, and hot water music in a basement.
same show no less.

- regardless.

i do believe there are some foul fuckers in this realm of "indie" labels.
and i think that list you rambled off is dead aim on those that are in question.

vagrant - aka - rape other labels rosters
victory - aka - sign bands to 5 albums deals to swallow their souls
but eulogy?

what the fuck are you talking about?

john is in no way "fucking" his bands.

- you need to chill the fuck out, and turn off your alkaline trio cd dude.
why?

1) they ripped off jawbreaker
2) they ain't that good

-

peace out.

People don't go to college for only money and a "safe" life. I believe it is admirable what the band did. I saw them, and heard their Cd, and they were good. But, too many people hold onto the idealistic bullshit that this scene creates. What would be a tragedy is continuing to tour, and create music b/c of fans, labels,or some bullshit vision of the American Dream and success all the while becoming more stagnant. Touring and playing in a band is an experience that everyone has the right to expirement, and should not be ridiculed for not finding it personally substantial. There are plenty of ambitious bands to fill the void. Bravo to a band who has the courage to break the dogmatic idea of musicians that expanding oneself into another entity than being a band is a shameful decision. music is an expressive outlet of freedom, not a fetter from progressing in one's life.

"a little quote from their labelmates "go to college and learn something nobody needs" the higher"- the exact ignorance i was talking about
