I will be sending a business-based questionnaire to producer/engineer Brian Mcternan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Moments In Grace), so if you'd like to submit a question for me to ask him, please leave it in the replies. This questionnaire is intended to inform those interested in the production side of music, and all questions will pertain to the business end and things of that nature.

Ask him if he still intends to use Matt Squire to work on albums with him. And ask him if he is still in love with Driving in Silence.

I'm not asking him questions directly associated with him at all... it's going to generalized questions intended to inform people interested in production, examples:

-"How invovled are producers in the song writing aspect of a band's music?"

-"What's the easiest way for young producers to pull some big time artists into their studio?"

etc...

Yeah I know. I just throw random shit in there because, hell why not.

I'm a fan of the small talk. When I talk to bands/music people, I can't ask questions like that.

What are some common mistakes a band can make when they are trying to records a demo?

What makes a good/bad producer/engineer?

When deciding weather to record a band or not which is more important the succusse you believe it could have (lable, management and hype behind it) or how much you personally like the band and their music?

Would you recommend to somebody looking to become a musician and a part of the music industry in general to get experience in production and marketing, and if so what is the most important to get a background in? Also, what is the most typical problem with bands today that have excellent music and creativity but cannot break into the underground mainstream?

Ask how much he makes a year

maybe a better way to put this would be something like how long did it take you to build enough of a name for yourself to be able to make this your full time job

not that i didn't think that was relatively funny, but I think if a 5th grader knew the word tact they would have been able to formulate a comment equally "genius"

In light of recent success of bands like Comeback Kid and Bane, given that your band was way better, would you ever consider a Battery reunion?

You should have as much marketing experience as possible. Forget production. The most typical problems for good bands with no success is no marketing knowledge/business sense.

Okay, maybe not genius.

But really funny.

And I'd say at least 7th grader.

This is sort of similar to ahnmin's question, but I think you should ask him what kind of equipment he would reccomend for a home recording studio. Maybe he could break it down into three sections: One for those who have a limited budget and want to get the essentials and the most out of their money, one for those who want the best quality they can get and for whom money is not an issue, and one in the middle of those two, that way people would also be able to mix and match if they want to.

What does it take for someone to go from producing on the side to being able to do it full-time, and how long does it usually take?
