Did Coldplay plagiarize Joe Satriani? The key is to listen to Satriani's guitar riff at 50 seconds and Chris Martin's vocals during the beginning. I personally think that it's obvious Coldplay did it...I hate to say it because I like them, but sadly enough it's dead fucking on =(

while i think they did, i could see this as being a subconscious thing. like he had heard it before, and forgotten the tune, and then it made it's way back into the single

Agreed...That would make sense

because really, if your going to release a single, and your a band with as big a profile as coldplay, you won't rip off someone and release it to the world

they probably did. intentionally or not, its the same melody. As long as they don't pull a vanilla ice.

If it was jsut the melody I'd day no. But the exact chord progression as well? Its a shame because I actually like that coldplay song, but you can;t do that, especially such a well known artist they ripped off.

To say someone plaigarized music is completely ridiculous. There are so many different songs, bands, and genres of music these days for each and every one of them to be entirely different. If one song sounds similar to another then oh well, it doesn't really matter. Lyrics, on the other hand, are a different story.

The line between musical originality and plagiarism is so thin. I dont consider this plagiarism.

There are about 500000 bands out there with the same chord progression as blink-182's "Dammit", and even blink weren't the first to use it. I don't really see it as plagiarism.

i heard about this os freakin long ago, like when the album came out or maybe even before. i'm not one to judge, but they do sound awfully similar.

I just wouldn't make sense for Coldplay to release the song if they knowingly copied Satriani. That's asking for a lawsuit, and don't labels listen to the album before it's released? Weird that someone didn't catch it.

You make a really good point. I really just made this poll to see what other people thought about the situation, because personally I really like Coldplay, but I was kind of dissappointed to hear about it a while back.

to be honest, i think you are crazy if you dont think they plagerized satriani. and to all the satriani haters, he would not be doing this for money. do you have any idea how many endorsements that he has? he has been so good for so long, he does not need money or fame or attention. i do believe coldplay ripped him off.

also it would be another thing if this was the first time that coldplay had been accused of this.

satriani is too big of a name for such an accomplished group of musicians to have not heard his song, they easily plagiarized even if they didnt entirely mean to. satch deserves something atleast

If this was taken from Santriani I'd say it wasn't intentional. just pulling up a rhythm from the past that sounds good. And what benefit does Coldplay have in ripping off his stuff? They are already well-established and extremely popular. There would be no reason to plagarize... especially the lead single off a highly anticipated album. And there is a lot of stuff out there that sounds similar (or even the same) at certain parts... with the millions of songs out there it's bound to happen.
