When I arrived at the show with my 2 friends, we were a bit early...Everyone was just standing around casually, so we went up to members of the bands and talked to them...Fun stuff...Really laid back atmosphere. Also, just a little fact, this was a benefit show, and all of the bands were playing for free, which, I think, was a really, really nice thing to do...
First up was foreverDOWN (http://www.foreverdown.com), a solo acoustic act in essence of The Rocket Summer's acoustic material. Sole member Casey Britt steps up to the mic, and does a short sound check... "Check, check, checkcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheck , TESTING!" And then the fun begins...Casey introduces himself and says that his first song's called "Just Follow Your Heart...That's What I Do," off of his sophmore full-length, "Fall Bares Branches, Birds Leave No Bark." Everything sounds great, especially Casey's voice...very strong! The next song up was a song that most of you probably haven't heard in awhile..."Mmmbop." Yup...you know you love it. :P Once this magnificent Hanson cover came to an end, Keenan Burton of No No Not Ever, who made a guest appearance on "Fall Bares Branches...," came up to do back-up vocals on a couple songs...Though a bit shakey at first, Keenan ended up doing great! Casey finished up his set with one of my all-time favorites by him, "Fall Down," and a brand new song with the tentative title "I'll Be There." It was grrrreat! :P
Though there were a couple technical difficulties at the beginning due to a light rain (the show was outdoors), everything was fixed in a timely fashion and it was an amazingly amazing performace! If you like The Rocket Summer and / or older Dashboard, I would recommend you listen to foreverDOWN at this very instant...You may find it to be the greatest thing you've ever heard. ;)
Full setlist:
1. Just Follow Your Heart...That's What I Do
2. Mmmbop
3. Look to the Sky
4. Hopefully Finding Hopeless
5. Fall Down
6. I'll Be There (tentative title...new song!)
Next came The Sophomore Year (http://thesophomoreyear.com/)...I didn't really get to see much of them because I was over at the merch table talking to Casey and getting Sloppy MeatEaters merch, but what I did hear sounded pretty good...These guys are going on tour with One Way Letter, so maybe you can check them out when / if they come to your town...
I couldn't catch their full setlist...Sorry! :(
After about a 20 minute break, the third band of the night, No No Not Ever (http://www.nononotever.com) got started...This was their first show ever and also the release show for the debut album, "Busy Girls Can't Remember." I think they did really good (except for a broken string during one of their songs, but that can't be helped), especially considering it was their first show! They had enough excitement on stage to keep me entertained (but it was kinda hard to get some decent pictures *shakes fist angrily* :P). But yea...mucho excitement on stage...They had a nice stage presence, and also, the sound quality was very good! I'd see 'em again. ;)
Setlist:
about 3/4 of the new CD
The final act, and arguable "main attraction," Sloppy MeatEaters (http://www.sloppymeateaters.com), were up...These guys DEFINATELY were the most energetic...They're the most exciting band I've ever seen live before, and that's saying something. Josh (singer / guitarist) was pretty much standing in the crowd the whole time...Oh man...It was great. The show started off with a song off their latest album, "Conditioned by the LAUGH TRACK," out on Orange Peal Records (only available at shows until June 14th)...They mainly played new stuff, but they threw in some old here and there...One of the highlights was "So Long." Very, very nice...I liked what they did to it (yea...they play it different live). The also did a couple cover songs, just for laughs...I almost liked them better than the originals... Anyway, though there were a couple techical difficulties (Dalton's guitar messed up in the middle of one song was the main thing) everything sounded great. I was in the very front row (right up against the stage), too so I got plenty of awesome pictures...
After the show, I went and talked to Josh a bit and got my picture taken with him...He seems to be a really nice guy... I'm also planning to book SME in my town later this summer, so we talked about that for a bit as well...Oh, and I got an advanced copy of their new CD and all I can say is it's amazing...and for only 10 bucks! It has tons of pictures and videos, among other features and 15 songs!
Overall, the best act, musically, was foreverDOWN, closely follwed by Sloppy MeatEaters...As far as stage presence / energy / hyperactivity goes though, Sloppy MeatEaters took the cake...
My rating of this show would have to be an A+++++. All of the bands were great, and it was for a good cause...Over $2,500 were raised that night. Would I go see the bands again? I dunno about The Sophomore Year, but the others...in a heartbeat.
