How do we make AP better? What features should be added, what sections should be revamped and/or fixed? Let me know in the replies - I'm graduating in a week and I might as well get my ass really working on this website.

yeah i think a tour database like the way the release database is would be cool, granted i know that is pulled in from something else, and having all the tours up would probably require 4 new staff and a whole new server, but maybe at least a sidebar listing tours ongoing currently, and a link to one of the bands sites for dates. god it would be amazing to have it automatically see what yr location is and tell you upcoming shows in your area, people would kill for that.
and congratulations jason.

oh shut up, there's 6 different reviewers and we all have individual albums we love. Of course you're going to see more 10s on a site that has more than 1 reviewer. We give plenty of other scores too, we just have more reviews than most sites so there's more 10s.

I agree that the search feature needs to be revamped. It's pretty bad.
And then does anyone remember that one feature that was around a long time ago. It was like "If you like ___ band then you'll like this ____ band" or whatever. It was a good way to find out about other bands that are similar to the stuff you already listen to. I miss that feature.

It's the newsposters discretion as to what gets posted...I mean, the Weakend has been featured in Alternative Press, it's not exactly the same thing. We can't post about every single band's demos or new songs or we'd have 12 pages of news a day, and then people would miss really important news posts about like...Say Anything signing to a major label or something.

I agree... too many posts about useless junk that, as scott said, crowds the more important news and people could miss it.
Second, more broader music news. I love the genres that are covered now. But there are a bunch of indie bands that I'd love to hear more about.
Hopefully those suggestions helped and are feasible. Congratulations with the site and graduation.

Scene points add a sense of humor to the elitist attitude that these forums sometimes have. Keep them. If you take those seriously anyways, this isn't the site for you.
Every band deserves promotion. How about adding a "Your Scene" section where readers can submit local bands from their area? Featuring good local bands from across the country is an excellent way to give young bands a high-five for their hard work (ex. AP.net featuring Another Found Self's (local high school kids from Ohio) "Et Tu" was AMAZING.)
Albino_Virgin

Yea, I really don't mind the gossip/non-music related stuff. Music should by far be the main focus, but a llittle gossip/pop culture/political thing here and there won't throw off the musicness of this site, or make people miss other things. Over probably 98% of everything is music related.
Also, the scrolling sigs are super annoying in my opinion. I now have to use the sidescreen arrows at the bottom of the screen, instead of the convienient little roller thing on my mouse when scrolling through comments since it take to long to get past everyone's damn sig, and usually just don't bother.

There's really no nice way of responding to this topic, but I'll try my best:
We get about 80 news submissions a day, tell me how the hell we could possibly post about every single band that is submitted? We are a NEWS (the quality of being sufficiently interesting and informing) website. And not to sound like a prick, but I post things that I feel people would take interest in. Whether a band is good or not, I feel my job is to post mainly about band's who have made a name for themselves and who have developed a solid fan base on their own... not try to create those things for a band. A lot of people have this overwhelming idea that the main page of this site was designed to break artists' careers and get them places, when in fact, it's supposed to be a place to inform people of the happenings on bands who have already broke themselves. I would love to help out every local and unsigned band I could, but it's impossible, and there has to be a way to pick and choose, and that way is.... which stuff would people find most interesting... the 16 year old high school band who has played 3 shows and updated their purevolume.com page?, or the band who have been touring the nation and working their asses off to make a name for themselves updating their purevolume.com page?... I help out bands who help themselves and work their asses off to create their own following. It's not my job to do that for them and I refuse to.. Unfortunately, We can't post about even 20% of the bands that get submitted, bc we wouldn't be a "news" site anymore if we did.

DVD and show reviews would be great. Also, sections for local and international bands sounds like a good idea, in theory.
While the scene points are fun and all, maybe set it so that there's only a limited number of scene points for the entire community, and we all have to fight over them...to the death!

This one seems completely obvious to me; so obvious, that I'm a little confused as to why it isn't already part of this site:
A shows section, similar to pollstar, for bands that get press on this site, which is browsable by cities, states, venues, and bands.
Not only would this be very convenient, it would clean up alot of the unneccesary tour-date posts. I know how Tate hates unnecessary posts in the news.

I think a TV Column on the right or left panel of the webpage would be cool. So many bands are getting exposure on talks shows and Fuse lately that people forget and lose track or the air times and details. I think a weekly update of a TV column that doesnt rotate or fall off the page would help tune viewers into to these shows.

I haven't read through all the posts, but a few ones:
Less utterly pointless posts. I don't care entirely too much if the Higher has a new headband design in their merchstore.
More coverage on the following labels who are actually making attempts to keep relatively aggressive music and its ilk alive: Nitro, Fat Wreck, Dirtnap, Better Youth Organization (BYO), Level Plane, A-F, Jade Tree, Robotic Empire.
Weekly / bi-weekly / monthly "You Should Be Listening To This Band, But You Probably Don't" feature for relative classics in the punk and punk-related genres; i.e. Braid, Lifetime, Jawbreaker, Sunny Day Real Estate, etc. al. Let's get some kids educated.
A better distinguishing between advertisements and site content.
I'll probably think of some more later at work or something I'm sure.

how about a "scene hall of fame" and every so often bands will become eligible, and people can vote on who should be elected, and then in the hall you can have a mini bio and picture of the band. Thatd be fun.

this site is awesome for news but on the front page maybe a little less opinion try to stay away from stuff like "you need this album" or "anyone who likes music should pick up this album" its very condscending (sp?) and snooty
maybe save all that stuff for the album review section
stop promoting shitty bands

I'll probably think of some more later at work or something I'm sure.
to add to that, I think you guys should archive all news submissions so it can be searched up, and then post the more important ones. That way, if someone wants news on a lesser known band, they can still search and find it.

Don't make pointless posts that have nothing to do with music. And don't post gossip.
I dunno, I like the gossip. Some of the gossip I hear about music and gossip that isn't even about music I hear here first. So I mean even if they're just rumors, it's cool to hear some crazy gossip. The only thing is like there is way too much shit posted. I don't want to hear about Ashlee Simpson unless she's falling off stage at a recent concert or something. You know?
Here's an idea. Have two news sections.
The big name bands that more people would care about, and then another section of news from less known bands. Hire another news poster to post those 80% of news submissions that don't get posted.
This is a really good idea. I bet it's a lot of work, but holy shit would it pay off and make everyone whining in this thread happy. I don't mind all the posts about Fall Out Boy or all the other big bands because I like most of them, but I do see what everyone is getting at.
You could bring back King of the Hill. That was always fun. Of course that means youd have to update something on a regular basis, and I know how hard that is for you.
Holy shit! YES! I loved King of the Hill. That's one of things that got me into Yellowcard. Rough Draft was on this site for so long and I loved that song so I checked out their mp3.com page and have been a fan ever since.
I don't really have any other new suggestions. Just about everything has been said in this thread. It would be nice if you could suspend or ban some of the assholes in the forum for spamming and just being an overall dick...

I agree that some of the staff needs to be fired, and newer staff who will actually do stuff hired. it's annoying to see there are a bunch of AP staffers that do nothing for this website except use it for their own personal gain. I'm sure there are a ton of people who would actually work hard on this website if given the chance.
keep the album reviewers though, it's nice to have a variety of opinions, especially when you get a feel for what each album reviwer's tastes are. it helps me decide if I should really check an album out or not.
I agree with the tour section suggestions, it definitely would help clear up the news posts that say, "so and so is touring with so and so and the dates are in the replies" and leave room for more news that we actually want to read.

How about a suggestion box so when someone thinks of something good they can just send it in.
and i also have to agree that the scrolling sigs are annoying.
ALSO, for people in the CT - DE - DC - ME - MD - MA - NH - NJ - NY - PA - RI - VT area www.punkdates.com is pretty good for show dates if you were asking for a tour date section.

this might be uncharted territory, but maybe a little bit of info on bands maybe not considered "punk", you kind of go into it a little bit with ben folds and ryan adams, but i'd like to see a little more stuff going on like that. more news on guys like damien rice, jack johnson, john butler trio. i bet alot of people coming to this site would dig stuff like that.

I like how people say..."you guys need more coverage on international artists..."you guys need coverage on labels such as..." meanwhile, NOBODY SUBMITS THAT STUFF TO US. If people wanted to see it on the main page so bad, how come nobody sends news updates or press releases pertaining to those genres or styles to us?

Good idea, but one question... why would anyone be interested in going to the 'less known bands' news section? I guarentee you that that section would get less hits, thus eliminating the purpose of even posting that stuff to begin with. Also, I know your response to this would've been..."well some people might want to discover new music on the 'less known bands' section", but that's what the PurePROMOS on pPureVOLUME.com (www.purevolume.com) are for... not ap.net.
Also, who actually has the time or patience to click on 50 unknown band links a day!?

I think it'd be pretty cool to completely customize AP.net for yourself, choosing alll your favorite bands, and being able to see when any new cd's come out from the list, when they're on tour, new news, etc. And if you want to discover new music, take off the "favorites list."
It's probably ridiculously hard to do, but just a though, it'd be pretty cool.

you are seriously blind. If you have payed attention to the hundreds of reviews that have been done in the past month you would know that's nowhere close to the truth. And how can a review NOT be biased? It's an opinion. You don't make any sense.

No offense, but to all of you who are requesting a broader range of music being covered I don't see it being that fruitful of a venture. I mean, you kinda pigeonhole yourself when you call your site "Absolutepunk.net, Acclaimedpunk.com, Emotionalpunk.com, etc."
Are we getting the point?

Ummm, I'm thinking, thinking...I dunno. I think the website is pretty sweet. Update the lyrics section a bit though I guess. Greg told me to PM him stuff to put in there before and I did and I don't think it every got updated. What ever happened to the Tours section of the website? That was a good feature because I hate having to go on ticketmaster and look for stuff because sometimes they don't put some of the smaller bands that I'd like to see. I think that's about all the suggestions I have. The only other thing I thought of was what if there was an AP Complilation CD made? I don't know how feasible that would be because I'm sure it costs quite a bit to make CDs and what not, but kind of like the same idea as the AP tour. It would be pretty sweet if there was an AP compilation CD. So, those are my suggestions. :)

How about more album reviews, but of lesser known and sometimes considered 'under the radar' bands? 8 reviews of the new starting line which isn't very good at all, and then no reviews of albums like 'an offer you can't refuse' by a change of pace, or 'a perfect way to say goodbye' by hand to hand. Might as well change the site name to absoluteMainstream.
Most importantly I would think it'd be important for this site to have its own release date schedule, rather than link to the other site like its currently set up.

Fire the photographers, they do nothing. In fact, slim the staff down.
Scott, Chris, Jared, Frank, Kelsey, Alan, Jake, Pat, Ryan, Brandon H, and Greg should be all you need.
Make 2 news sections, one for the gossipy crap, Fans Report In updates, bands getting 1 million plays on PureVolume, ect. and another with "hard journalism" - tourdates, television appearances, album releases/tracklisting/progress, signings

I agree the focus has been mostly on the mainstream bands, but I have seen my friends' bands mentioned a few times. I think the mainstream bands may send their CDs to be reviewed, but I may be wrong. Usually the reviews are done before the CDs are actually out. I think that is why the reviews are rather nicer too. I could be wrong.
I don't think there should be two news sections. No one would really read the underground bands. They don't have much news posted anyway.
