The staff recommendations for the week can be found below:

TJ: Sorry i'm so late again this week. Mine are right here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=1277372#post127737 2).

Frank: I recommend watching the movie "The Life Of David Gale" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289992/) with a cold cup of Arizona Iced Tea. It has the biggest twist ending ever... the movie that is, not the iced tea.

Greg : Its now time for the Semi Finals for our quest to see who has the number one album in the first quarter of 2005. Go and vote right HERE! (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=72263)

Ryan: Check them out here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=1273692#post127369 2).

Justin: I haven't done these in a while, so check out my long overdue recommendations (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=72272)

That "Life of David Gale" movie was totally watered down and predictable...pretty formulaic really, even if it WAS based on a true story. Was that the one based on a true story??? I might be thinking of something else...it was still pretty lame, though, despite the presence of Kate Winslet, who has nice boobies...

Life of David Gale is one of the weakest movies I've ever seen. Mostly because of the twist ending (which I saw coming less than halfway into the movie). The twist ending defeats everything the characters were trying to accomplish simply for the sake of easing one person's conscience. Weak sauce.

I'm seeing this tour tonight but I'm not sure I'd even call myself a casual fan of AS. I've only heard Low Level Owl 1 and Mare Vitalis and they're both right around 6s in my book. At least I'm mostly unbiased.

I recommend the band Ampere. They have a split with Wolves and a 6 song demo, and also have a full length coming out really soon. The band is made up of former members of Orchid.

And on that note, you should all go pick up the new Orchid comp "Totality". It has previously unreleased songs and songs from their 7" splits with the likes of The Red Scare. It is a great album and also has a 20 page booklet with the lyrics to all the songs. Highly recommended.

I also recommend checking out Red Sparowes which consists of members of Isis. They play haunting music in the vein of Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai with a sort of metal twinge. Their album At the Soundless Dawn is in stores now.

Also check out the movie Crash in theatres now as well as the PS2 game "God of War".

whew... thats it i think.

if you want to check any of these bands out, im me at IAmNietzche00

The end of the Life of David Gale was so predictable, i guessed it not even 20 mins into the movie.

Predictable or not, I think the plot is ingenius and Kevin Spacey is incredible. David Gale, Seven, Usual Suspects, Shawshank Redemption, Etenral SUnhine Of The Spotlesss Mind and Garden State are my top favorite of all time. Kevin Spacey is in three of those.

i met the writer of american beauty and wow, was he full of himself. but then again, if i wrote that script i would probably think i was pretty awesome too.

and i dont have any music to recommend, but i highly recommend the movie Crash. it was really good, and Don Cheadle and Terrence Dashon Howard (who is going to blow up this summer when Hustle and Flow comes out) are great in it.

the only thing remarkable about The Life of David Gale is that Kate Winslet actually did a movie where she kept her clothes on.

I'll post some reccomendations for the sake of it being Sunday and almost rainy.

1. Steaz Soda - Great organic soda mixed with tea. I shit you not this stuff is damn good.
2. The Best of Paul Westerberg - It's not the best songs, in fact it's kind of boring, but Paul Westerberg and the Replacements are still great.
3. Gummo - Very interesting movie, to say the least.

Feedback is welcome...

when did Tate become too cool to do recs?

haha I was just thinking the same thing yesterday...

This is what I have been spinning this week:

The Receiving End Of Sirens - Between the Heart and the Synapse
Circa Survive - Juturna
The Starting Line - Based On a True Story
Sherwood - Sing But Keep Going

And everyone should go buy Dave Chappelle Show Season 2 because that comes out on May 24th.

Punch Drunk Love was a lot better than I expected... definitely not traditional Sandler.

A great movie, one of my favorites, is October Sky. Awesome flick.

Just substitute Life of David Gale with another Spacey movie, American Beauty, and your list would be looking much better.

I hate to say this, but "Gummo" is anything but interesting...I had some pretty lofty expectations, knowing that the same guy did that that did "Kids," which is REALLY an interesting movie. "Gummo" is just boring, disgusting, and depressing, not to mention a waste of my time.

but PW and The Replacements are cool, though...and I'm in the beverage distributing biz, and I've never heard of this Steaz Soda, sounds pretty interesting, though. If I ever come across it, I'll have to give it a shot.

I see your point concerning "Gummo" the reason why I thought it was interesting is because it's suppose to be based on a true story. Did you hear that anywhere?

That douche bag Harmony Korinne did Gummo and suposedly wrote Kids (which Larry Clark directed)

I imagine Korinne's original script for Kids was probably like:

Idiot kid likes to have sex with virgins.

Scumbag kids roll a blunt in the park.

Idiot kid gives aids to a virgin.

Idiot kid #2 rapes former virgin, gets aids, it's ironic.

I give Larry Clark a lot of credit with turning that into a great, realistic, influential movie with a good message. Obviously he was the talent behind it because... where's Korinne now? Hanging out with Vincent Gallo (who got blown on camera by Korinne's former GF and Kids "virgin with aids" Chloe Sevigny in Brown Bunny)? Korinne's name was probably trumpeted around by Miramax as a marketing ply "Kids must be true because it was written by a 16 year old." Just like that piece-o-shit Thirteen.

I think I usually agree with Frank on the music side of things but I think those "top movies of all time" might need a little re-thinking or would at least make for a good night of drinking and debate.

david gale is definintely nowhere near as good as any of those other movies. kevin spacey himself couldn't safe that shit heap of a film. i will admit it had a good idea, but it was carried out awfully. i'm sorry you like it.

I dont like it, I LOVE IT. I think the idea of someone sacrificing themselves to prove a point in something they stand for is so fucking awesome. I loved every single aspect of it, and so do my friends, we watch it monthly. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone criticize it, out of the dozens of people i've convinced to watch it.

Commercially, it didn't do well, but most of the "average-joe filmgoers" I've spoken to enjoy it. For example, a female friend of mine, whose favorite movies include "Legally Blonde" and "Honey" loves "The Life of David Gale".

What the hell??? How can anybody's favorite movie be "Honey"??? Aside from the fact that Jessica Alba is the hottest thing on two legs, that movie was a total waste of time...if you want a rad dancing movie, (also without noteworthy plot) then check out "You Got Served." Plus, Trey Parker and Matt Stone never spoofed "Honey."

A Wilhelm Scream - http://www.purevolume.com/awilhelmscream
The Thrift Syndicate - http://www.purevolume.com/thethriftsyndicate
Minus The Bear

If you've never heard any of these bands (mainly the first 3) i highly recommend you take a listen. The Casual Lean is just amazing. and are about to blow up. A Wilhelm Scream are in the process of blowing up and are only going to get bigger. and The Thrift Syndicate is a really talented group of guys. They'll rock your socks off...then back on again.
