View Full Version : Favorite Jimmy Eat World album?

I'm sure this one was on here at some point before, but this seems like it could be one of the most heated debates in the poll forum.

Personally, I think Chase This Light is absolutely perfect. The Self-titled and Static Prevails are very eh for me, and I only appreciate it as steps in the band discovering their sound. I appreciate the rawness of Clarity and owe my love for the band to the first time I heard Lucky Denver Mint, but there are several weak songs on the album that stop it from being my favorite as a whole. Bleed American was a great album but I had many issues with some songs just playing it too straight, and only showing glimmers of that heart-tugging edge that makes me really love this band. With Futures I think JEW almost nailed it; I loved the darker tone on some of the songs, and they seemed to almost have found the perfect combination of, well, whatever the hell that thing is that makes them "emo" in the best sense possible, beautiful instrumentation, and a fair dose of catchy thrown in. That perfection was not truly achieved, I believe, until Chase This Light.

The album pulls all the right strings at all the right times, the guitar lines are so immaculately matched to their songs that I can't even believe it, and the mix of bright and brooding pop is unmatched in my opinion. "Let It Happen" may be one of the best pop-rock songs I've EVER heard, the chorus of "Here It Goes" manages to tear your heart out while making you dance, the string arrangements on "Gotta Be Somebody's Blues" come at just the right moment in the midst of the poppier, brighter tracks, and songs like "Chase This Light" and "Dizzy" have in ample amount that incredible emotional appeal that I love most about JEW's music. The only misstep on Chase This Light is Feeling Lucky, which to me just sounds like a weak, boring, shallow, useless nothing. I'm actually really surprised at how inappropriate it seems in the context of this album.

Sorry for the long rant. Any thoughts? Why did you vote for the album you chose?

Considering this poll has been made about a billion times, it is interesting to see the gradual shift from Clarity to Bleed American as the overall favorite. At least, that is what I have noticed.

Bleed American, Clarity is a VERY close second if not tie.

I cant stand "Blues" from CTL. If that weren't on it, it would be a perfect album.

That being said, I voted for Clarity.

I figured as much, but I haven't seen any of them, and besides, Chase This Light has now had a fair amount of time to sink in and be judged on the same level.

MY GOD it hurts to see Clarity losing to both Bleed American and Futures. I think it's their only album without any weak songs and I doubt they'll ever make another album half as good.

Clarity for me. Futures and Bleed American are very close on it's heels though. Chase this light is great, but some songs don't have that special feeling that Jimmy Eat World gives to their songs which make the other three masterful. Static Prevails is hard to bring into the comparison since the style is so different, but it is a pretty good album.

I agree 100%, I voted for Clarity, but Futures and Bleed American are close behind....Chase this Light has some awesome songs but also some duds, and then Static Prevails is too raw and unlike any of the other albums for me to get into it 100%

Bleed American is my favorite, but I love them all. I just chose based on which one I pop in more frequently.

i went with futures today, but i could argue on behalf of clarity, bleed american or futures as my favorite, and i think chase this light is great too.

All the albums are really good, except, of course the self-titled. I mean, that one's ok, but it doesn't seem like true JEW.

I went with Clarity today because I just listened to it and it's a really, really good record. But I also love Bleed American, Static Prevails, Chase This Light, and Futures (probably in that order). But they're all really good.

jimmy eat world is one of those bands that in my opinion have never released a bad album. i was lucky enough to get one of the original pressings of bleed american before they were recalled and renamed. i remember not knowing what the fuck they sounded like, only that tom delonge mentioned them as one of his favourite bands on urethra chronicles so when i saw it on the shelves i snatched it up straight away. one of the best purchases i've ever made. for that reason i chose bleed american because that was how i discovered them. they've never disappointed me with any of their releases though and i adore every single one of their albums. easily one of my favourite bands of all time.

Chase This Light for me. CTL just has exactly what I wanted in a JEW album and "Dizzy" is my favorite JEW track of all time.
Futures is probably my next in line, followed by BLeed American, Clarity, and Static.

I like JEW the most when they write concise pop songs with awesome lyrics. CTL for me.

I heard the demo of sweetness before I bought BA and was really into it, and then disappointed with the album version.

this is exactly the same way i got into them....well this is pretty much exactly my same story. Jew mentioned in the Urethra Chronicles and then i think i heard JEW played at Tom's wedding. Bleed American came out shortly after this.

I'd have to say Bleed American, followed closely by Futures. I forgot who said it, but when the "favorite JEW album" topic came up last time, somebody said "Bleed American is what a pop-punk album should sound like". It's true.

Chase This Light doesn't get nearly enough credit though. Great record.
