2008 is winding down and I remember we had one of these threads last year about the best shows/sets of the year. So, I figured we should do it again. Post a top 5, 10, 15, 20, whatever you want and include the name of the band (obvious), venue/city, date, and setlist if you have it. I will be doing mine later tonight because I only have one more show for the rest of the year.

1. 09/18/08 - Sauget, IL - Pop's - EasyCore Tour: New Found Glory, A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, International Superheroes of Hardcore, and Crime in Stereo
2. 03/26/08 - Sauget, IL - Pop's - The Starting Line, Bayside, Four Year Strong, and Steel Train
3. 08/02/08 - Chicago, IL - Verizon Wireless Amphitheater - Warped Tour: Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, and Against Me!
4. 07/07/08 - St. Louis, MO - The Pageant - Shout It Loud Tour: Goldfinger, Less Than Jake, Big D & The Kids Table, and Suburban Legends
5. 12/03/08 - St. Louis, MO - Creepy Crawl - Fall Out Boy

Both dates of the EasyCore tour that I saw this year were badass. some of the best live bands around today
Against Me! tears it up alive, always
Set Your Goals does it great, favorite band so its a given
Less Than Jake and Goldfinger are always great to see
Fall Out Boy at Creepy Crawl was ridiculous.

2008 was a pretty good year actually.

1. 08/01/08 - Chicago, IL - Brand New, Kevin Devine, and Manchester Orchestra. Proof Spring Tour 07 needs to happen again.
2. 09/26/08 - Indianapolis, IN - Brand New, The Builders and the Butchers. Introducted to TB&TB, BN played jams...awesome.
3. 10/25/08 - Vineland, NJ - Saves The Day, Anthony Green, Moneen. Saw Moneen for the first time in years, Saves the Day in Jersey...enough said. Oh yeah, except for Deciding. End.
4. 06/06/08 - Richmond, VA - Race The Sun, Patent Pending, Just Surrender, Every Avenue - Race The Sun reunited and I died of sheer happiness.
5. 04/20/08 - Washington DC - The Starting Line, Bayside, Four Year Strong - Last time seeing TSL in a club, plus I don't count Bamboozle so it's really their last show of mine. Sucks.

Honorable mention - Kevin Devine/Manchester Orchestra tour. I went to one date already and the sets weren't up to their potential, but I still have two more to go.

10/4/08 - Less Then Jake - Club Bourbon Street, New Port Richey, FL - It was at a smallish club. They brought a lot of energy as usual, and the small venue made it pretty awesome. It reminded me more of shows I went to 10 years ago then anything I've gone to in a while, so that's probably why I'd say it was the best show I was at this year. Nothing else really stuck out.

1. Orlando, FL: Warped Tour 2008: so amazing, ADTR, SYG, ETID, Gym class heroes, greeley estates, reliant k, FYS on the smallest damn stage ever with security making a barrier, between the trees, cinematic sunrise, i cant remember more but i mean damn, ill never go to a show that awesome again.
2.Tallahassee, FL: Easycore Tour: Nfg, FYS, and ADTR, what else could you want?
3. Orlando, FL: Atl, Maydayparade, The Maine, and Every Avenue: ATL blew me away, circles put the icing on the cake

a year is to damn long to remember shows from, those are basically just lately, oh well.

love threads like this...obviously, my top two favorites are going to be pretty evident from my SN

1. 311 - 3/11/08, NOLA (311 day baby!)
2. 311 - Atlanta, GA - hands down, one of the best nights of my life. doesn't top 3-11 Day, but I met Nick and everyone else...the set was epic, the crowd was phenomenal, and the energy was definitive of a positive 311 show. Amazing, amazing night.
3. PROBABLY would have been NFG's show in ATL, but my friend and I decided to get stupid wasted and pass out for the entire show. what a waste, lol.
SO, 3 really is probably Rise Against/Alk3/Thrice at the Tabernacle back in October
4. Against Me! in Ahens back in January...what an unbelievable show, I had hardly heard of them before that day either.
5. Warped Tour - great lineup this year, made me a believer in SotY again. plus AvA, Shwayze, Against Me!, and Jack's Mannequin were fantastic.

10.) Tom Petty - June 6 - The Whacovia Center

Despite being completely hammered and not remembering a lot of the show, its awesome to have been there and seen one of my idols live on stage : still touring after all these years.

9.) August Burns Red - August 31 - The Starlight Ballroom
This show was bananas. really solid opening acts, and i went with my absolute best friends. There was no barrier so kids were stage diving and shit. It was just insane. August Burns Red is really fucking tight live.

8.) City & Colour - October 3 - The Electric Factory

Dallas Green, my absolute favorite musical discover of 2008. sometimes ( pun intended ), a band will come around at just the right time. just when your most into them. Dallas stopped in philly on his tour with Tegan & Sara when i was basically listening to Bring Me Your Love exclusively. Dallas is one of the few live performers i can name who actually pulls of their live set better then on the album. The only reason Dallas only made #8 was due to his short set, which im sure was beyond his control.

7.) Circa Survive - September 26 - The
First Unitarian Church

Nothing like a hometown show. " Philly Baby !!! ", Anthony exclaimed several times during the show. Circa did a few intimate headlining shows in september before shacking up in the studio to record their follow up to 2007's On Letting Go. I love everything about the First Unitarian Church as a venue and it seemed to suit a band like Circa perfectly. Anthony was dead on, and again prooved to me why he is one of my favorite frontmen to watch.

6.) Saves The Day - May 1 - The TLA

The Bamboozle Road Show 08 ! The line-up of this show was . . . different. pairing electro power pop sensations, Metro Station with the likes of high adrenaline pop punk likes of Set Your Goals definitly raised some eyebrows, but all in all made for a fun time and an excellent pre-game to bamboozle. Saves The Day played a 33 song set made up of solely crowd requests, taking a break only to do shots ( courtesy : SYG ) every 11 songs. Amazing show.

5.) The Starting Line - April 18 - The Electric Factory

What needs to be said ? The Starting Line's final tour. Amazing tour support in Bayside, Four Years Strong & Steel Train. Last chance to sing "Ready" at the top of my lungs along with a sold out, hometown crowd. The Starting Line did the keystone state proud and we love / miss them very much.

4.) Underoath - October 22 - The Electric Factory

Plain & Simple : Underoath put on one helluva rock n' roll show. The lights, production, films, it all just adds up to a truely epic concert-going experience. The new songs sounded incredible live. Don't miss Underoath on Warped Tour 09' this summer !

3.) Fall Out Boy - November 7 - The North Star Bar

Worth the 10 hour camp in north phily ? worth every minute of it. it felt less like a show and more like an experience. I met so many awesome people and the show itself was just insane. 7 songs from TTTYG and a really diverse crowd. There's really just not enough words. Ill really never forget this show, ever. Oh&petehumpedmeinabearsuit. /swt brg.

2.) Elton John - July 19 - The Boardwalk Hall

Sir Elton. Ever since i was young, ive always loved elton john's music. Naturally, when he decided to play music a mere hour away from my house, i had to participate. Elton John has been writting music & performing for over 40 years. the man never has to work a day in his life again, yet he plays hundreds of shows a year. its really inspiring. From Yellow Brick Road to The Bridge, Im a Rocket Man for life.

1.) Bamboozle 08' - May 3 & 4 - Giants Stadium

Just plain awesome. Got to see everyone from Circa Survive to A Day To Remember. Set Your Goals to The Starting Line, it was just incredible. What a weekend.

This is actually really hard to decide haha.

I still have two shows left this year (maybe three) so this might change, but as of right now...

1. New Kids on the Block - Oct. 10th, HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA.
I'm putting NKOTB at #1 because it was a show I honestly never thought would happen, I'd waited 18 years to see them. And they definitely didn't disappoint.

The rest aren't really in any order persay, and I lumped in multiple shows on tours because I can't pick between them lol.

6. Set Your Goals w/ Hit The Lights, I Am The Avalanche, and The Years Gone By - May 24th (my 25th birthday!) at the Glasshouse in Pomona.

7. Bayside w/ The Matches, Valencia, and The Status - Oct. 19th at Slim's in San Francisco, Oct. 20th at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco.

i feel like a loser because i haven't gone to as many shows as ya'll. i've been to like, 5 this year.

the best setlist of those shows was probably a tie between Jack Johnson and Bruce Springsteen (Bruce played almost all deep tracks).

i might be misinterpreting this thread as the best shows that i've attended, so bear with me.

Dave Matthews Band with opener Alejandro Escovedo (June 10) Montage Mountain, Scranton, PA
Dead/Allman Brothers (October 13) Bryce Jordan Center, State College, PA
John Legend with opener Raphael Saadiq (Dec 4) Bryce Jordan Center, State College, PA
Blue Man Group (April 30) Bryce Jordan Center, State College, PA

No order, they were all great in their own way.

I'll continue to add on as I remember more shows. I don't keep all the tickets.

great thread, troy.
Thanks. Even though I can't take full credit for it because it was done last year.

Dave Matthews Band with opener Alejandro Escovedo (June 10) Montage Mountain, Scranton, PA.
I was suppose to go to that show. I had a fifth row center/isle seat but I couldn't make it out to Scranton due to low funds. The setlist was insane and the show I did go to didn't even come close to matching it.

yess!! love these threads, its really cool to see what other people put

but wow, I did not go to nearly as many shows this year then usual
so here we go
4. October 3rd/ Embassy Theatre/ Fort Wayne, IN- Ben Folds with the Fort Wayne Orchestra- This was a really fun and cool show...it was apart of their Pops series and it was just Ben and his piano with the orchestra. The set list was really diverse some BF5, some Way to Normal, Some Rockin the Suburbs, it was everywhere. It was my first time seeing him and it was just really cool seeing him with an orchestra.
3. October 17th/Murat Arabian Room/ Indianapolis, IN- Margot and the Nuclear So and So's- It was a hometown show for these guys, Animal! and Not Animal! had just been released that Tuesday. They came out in Animal masks and played a solid set! I was really glad to see them. It was a fun show.
2. August 1st/ House of Blues/ Brand New/ Manchester Orchestra/ Kevin Devine/ Chicago,IL- This was a really great show, it was 17+. It was apart of the Lolla after party. It started at like 10 and went really late. I had a blast, it was my first time seeing all of the bands. Brand New was really good. It was such a fun night, I was so tired after that show.
1. May 23rd/ United Center/ Chicago, IL/ Glow in the Dark Tour- Wow! this was such a great tour! Kanye, Rihanna, Lupe, N.E.R.D., It was all around a great show. Kanye killed it in the home show. It was my first time seeing these guys also! The set up was crazy cool to. It really topped it off for me as the tour of 08'

Festivals(ish)
3. August 13th/Mayhem Festival/ Verizon Wireless Music Center/ Noblesville, IN- It was cool seeing Underoath, and I really liked seeing Slipknot also. It wasnt the best thing ever though
2. July 31st/ Warped Tour 2008/ Verizon Wireless Music Center/ Noblesville,IN- I had a great time as usual seeing bands like 3OH!3, Four Year Strong, Bring Me the Horizon, Say Anything, KATY PERRY! jk, The Devil Wears Prada, All Time Low, Family Force 5, Motion City Soundtrack, The Bronx, Gym Class Heroes, The Academy Is..., Cobra Starship and tons more
1. August 1-3/ Lollapalooza 2008/ Grant Park/ Chicago, IL- What else can I say, Kanye was great, Jesse blew up and threw a guitar into a drum set, Girl Talk's set was soo crazy and great that the stage almost broke, People almost died during Rage Against the Machine (my favorite act of the weekend I will say. It was awesome), Radiohead was crazy also, Raconteurs, Innerpartysystem, Lupe Fiasco, Black Keys, Explosions in the Sky, MGMT was crazy also to, I love them now, people were complaining but I thought they were exellant, Stephan Malkamus, Does It Offend You Yeah? (DJ Set), The Cool Kids, Spank Rock and Flosstradamus. I mean that whole weekend was a blast I loved every minute of it. I could go on and on about how cool that was for me

I would love loved to go to more shows but couldnt sadly, Hopefully in 09 it will bring me more

Thanks. Even though I can't take full credit for it because it was done last year.

I was suppose to go to that show. I had a fifth row center/isle seat but I couldn't make it out to Scranton due to low funds. The setlist was insane and the show I did go to didn't even come close to matching it.
I went for the lawn tickets, but got there early, so I was able to get up close right against the fence. The weather was intense, and LeRoi's solo in Crush set off the tornado alarms. It was easily the best I've seen them.

Oh shit, forgot about Glow In The Dark. Such a sick show. And considering I went to ten of the JL/KD solo shows, I guess one of those should get an honorable mention.

1. June 19th - Death Cab for Cutie, Rogue Wave - Columbia,MO - It was a great show after the rain stopped and once i got out of line. A great set with two encores will make everything all better. The fact that it was outside on a Saturday night during summer with Death Cab also made for a good night.
2. October 9th - New Found Glory, A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, International Superheroes of Hardcore, Crime in Stereo - Columbia, MO - NFG's shows are always well done, but the fact that they were with so many other great bands made this night unforgettable.
3. July 1st - Warped Tour - Maryland Heights, MO - For the tour being in the middle of summer, it sure didn't feel like it. Plus, the bands that I saw included A Day to Remember, Every Time I Die, Mayday Parade, Jack's Mannequin, Anberlin, Say Anything, The Academy Is..., The Bronx and Protest the Hero.
4. March 11th - Relient K, The Wedding, Rookie of the Year - Columbia, MO - Relient K put on a good set, along with the other bands, and this was one of the shows with their new drummer to prepare for Warped Tour. They left me wanting more in the end.
5. November 9th - Every Time I Die, The Bronx, Stick to Your Guns, Bald Eagle - Columbia, MO - Every Time I Die puts on a great show and it was awesome at a small club with how Keith interacts with the crowd. He is such a cool guy to talk to also. One of my favorites in the music industry.
6. November 20th - Ludo, The Higher, Eye Alaska, The Randies - Columbia, MO - The fact that Ludo dressed up as characters from the popular musical "Little Shops of Horrors" made for a real fun time at the Blue Note. The Ghostbusters cover was also awesome.
Honorable Mention:
Taking Back Sunday - December 10th - Columbia, MO - I can't wait to see this show and the new songs that they've been playing currently. It should be fun.

As someone who attended over 100 shows this year (and finally started to wear earplugs), here goes my top 10.

10) WEEZER/ANGELS & AIRWAVES/TOKYO POLICE CLUB @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY) – Bringing out their fans on stage for the “hootenanny” made it clear to me that there were still new things that could be none in the big bad rock show.

9) JIMMY EAT WORLD @ The Bamboozle (East Rutherford, NJ) – A mostly mediocre festival weekend (or maybe I’m just getting old) but Jimmy Eat World was absolutely beautiful outside (the rain was an added bonus).

8) JACK’S MANNEQIUN @ The Blender Theatre (New York, NY) – Such a powerful record and one of the most endearing and earnest live shows. Andrew makes it fun while still getting his tunes across.

7) PEARL JAM @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY) – Wierdly, the theme of this list is the bigger shows whereas I usually love club/theatre shows. Still, PJ proved why they are one of the most relevant bands today. Such a powerful and political show that it’s hard not to see it as an early indication of the ’08 election.

6) FLEET FOXES @ Webster Hall (New York, NY) – Loved the banter, loved how beautiful they sounded. Plus, anyone that can play and sing without a microphone in a NYC venue and have 1,400 people be totally quiet gets a tip of the hat.

5) THE RACONTEURS @ Terminal 5 (New York, NY) – Jack White proves he’s one of the last few rock stars. He has that glow that stars have.

4) NINE INCH NAILS @ The Izod Center (East Rutherford, NJ) – Such an amazing production and Trent is as intense as ever. Seriously, the best lighting I’ve ever seen at a show.

3) RADIOHEAD @ ALL POINTS WEST FESTIVAL (Night 2) – Liberty State Park (Jersey City, NJ) – Almost as good as night 1. Of course, I had people with me but when they played “Fake Plastic Trees” my eyes welled up.

2) LESS THAN JAKE/GOLDFINGER @ Roseland Ballroom (New York, NY) – Getting on stage with Goldfinger at a venue I grew up going to was an experience in itself. The fact that both bands played like it was 1997 all over made it a strong #2

1) RADIOHEAD @ ALL POINTS WEST FESTIVAL (Night 1) - Liberty State Park (Jersey City, NJ) - I knew my first experience with Radiohead had to be alone without any distractions, without anybody whispering in my ear. It had to be just me and the band. I was also lucky that it was a general admission situated that allowed me to get within 4 rows of the stage (though I pissed off a good number of people who had planted themselves there since 11am). Phenomenal, especially when they played “How To Disappear Completely”. They lived up to everything I had heard about.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

311 @ Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY)
Against Me (Warped Tour) @ Nassau Coliseum (Uniondale, NY)
Death Cab For Cutie @ McCarren Pool (Brooklyn, NY)
Foo Fighters/Serj Tankian/Against Me @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
Honda Civic Tour (Panic At The Disco, Motion City Soundtrack, The Hush Sound, Phantom Planet) @ Roseland Ballroom (New York, NY)
Jesse Lacey @ Music Hall of Williamsburg (Brooklyn, NY)
Kaiser Chiefs @ Webster Hall (New York, NY)
The Hives @ Terminal 5 (New York, NY)
The Killers @ Hammerstein Ballroom (New York, NY)
The Kooks @ Terminal 5 (New York, NY)
Linkin Park/Coheed & Cambria @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
Ludo @ The Knitting Factory (New York, NY)
Minus The Bear @ Webster Hall (New York, NY)
My Chemical Romance/Taking Back Sunday @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
Rise Against/Alkaline Trio/Thrice/Gaslight Anthem @ Roseland Ballroom (New York, NY)
Santogold @ Irving Plaza (New York, NY)
Third Eye Blind @ Nokia Theatre (New York, NY)
Tokyo Police Club @ Bowery Ballroom (New York, NY)
We Are Scientists @ Bowery Ballroom (New York, NY)
Yellowcard/The Spill Canvas @ Irving Plaza (New York, NY)

3. Pearl Jam @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY) - its Pearl Jam
4. Lupe Fiasco @ Nokia Theater (New York, NY) - amazing set, showed me rap concerts can be fun too
5. Allman Brothers Band/Bob Weir and Rat Dog @ Jone Beach (Watagh, NY) - Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks ripped it up
6. Phil Lesh and Friends/Levon Helm Band @ Jones Beach - After all these years, Phil has still got it
7. NINE INCH NAILS @ Virgin Mobile Festival (Baltimore, MD) - Absurd visuals, great energy from Trent while he fought a cold
8. Say Anything/Manchester Orchestra/Biffy Clyro/Weatherbox @ Nokia Theater (New York, NY) - Great show, terrible crowd
9. Chromeo @ Virgin Mobile Festival (Batlimore, MD) - Dance party extravaganza
10. Andrew Bird @ Virgin Mobile Festival (Baltimore, MD) - Never heard of him prior to the concert, huge fan after his live show
11. 311/Snoop Dogg @ PNC Bank Arts Center (Homdel, NJ) - Can never go wrong with a 311 summer show
12. Dark Star Orchestra @ Nokia Theater (New York, NY) - Hippie craziness
13. Third Eye Blind @ Nokia Theatre (New York, NY) - Their self Titled CD is still one of the best ever
14. Foo Fighters/Serj Tankian/Against Me @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY) - love Dave, but new setlists needed

did anyone actually say that? i got the impression that show refers to the whole day of warped, and all the bands seen, just like a regular show would include all the bands seen, not just one's set

ok... mine are numbered just so i could keep track...but not necessarily in order if that makes sense..i just know what my top shows are, not necessarily the order of them lol

1. Fall Out Boy @ The Basement (Columbus, OH) - Like someone else said, it didn't even feel like just a concert, it was an experience. We camped out, and it was such a diverse crowd. when we got there, it was already even between guys and girls, and almost everyone was college aged (or older). i met tons of awesome people that helped time pass, and the actual show itself was insane

2. Warped Tour (kinda combining all 3 i went to as one b/c the days all blur together and i don't remember which one was best lol...so.... Detroit, Cincinnati, and Noblesville)- seriously...can it be summer again? this year kicked ass (although it did kinda kick my ass too haha)

3. Bamboozle Festival (New Jersey)- both days, not gonna separate them lol. pretty much everything that could have gone wrong that weekend did, and it still was absolutely amazing...and i will never forget the barriers falling the second Madina Lake started playing (NEVER PUT ML IN THE BUBBLE KTHNX...OWW)

4. Story Of The Year with Madina Lake and Josephine Collective @Bogarts (Cincinnati, OH)- all amazing live, and i met up with so many River People, it was awesome

5. Envy On The Coast with Brighten @The Basement (Columbus, OH)- 1st time I saw EOTC, and woah....blown away. looking forward to seeing them again with TBS on sunday. and i've always loved Brighten :]

6. Cute Is What We Aim For with Ace Enders, Danger Radio, and Powerspace @ The Basement (Columbus, OH)- i also saw them in Cleveland, but Columbus was the last night, so it was crazy. The show was sold out, and of course there were pranks. the show in toledo (withough CIWWAF) is what started my D:R obsession lol.

7. Kiros, School Boy Humor, Broadway, Rosematter @ Frankies (Toledo, OH)- this show was so small and chill...half of the crowd was the other bands lol. but it was so much fun b/c of that. and going to steak-n-shake afterward with Kiros....best time ever! love those guys

8. Mayday Parade with My American Heart and The Graduate @The Basement (Columbus, OH)- 3 of my fave bands all in one show

9. All Time Low with Mayday Parade, Just Surrender, and Every Avenue @The Basement (Columbus, OH)- front row right between Alex and Jack....oh yes :]
also the first time i saw EA, who i now love and have seen almost as many times as ML haha

10. The Hush Sound with The Cab, Steel Train, and The Morning Light @ Headliners (Toledo, OH)- Camp Hush Sound!! yay....but really, the time before the concert was a lot of fun, and the actual show was great too.

and after doing this, it became even more obvious why I love the Basement... I have always had a great time there lol

In no real order, here are a few of mine.

Jack's Mannequin- The Paradise Rock Club, Boston MA: Awesome set, and was front and center for a great performance. Andrew puts in 110% and it shows.

Howie Day- Paradise Lounge, Boston MA: Incredibly small venue, again got up front and center. First show in Boston in years and he played a few older songs, newer ones, and everything in between. After being out of the public eye for a few years, he sounded amazing, and I was so glad to get to see him twice this year.

John Mayer- Tweeter Center, Mansfield MA: Got incredible seats, and to watch John wail on his guitar is a damn good time. His interactions with the crowd are awesome as well. If you are even a casual fan of his, you absolutely need to get to one of his shows. You won't regret it.

Angels and Airwaves- Palladium, Worcester MA: I know a lot of people hate this band, but I enjoy the music for what it is. Performance was better than what Tom usually delivers, and I was able to meet him afterwards which was great. I've been listening to his music in one way or another since before I can even remember, so it meant a lot.

Hotel Cafe Tour, Paradise Rock Club, Boston MA: It was interesting how they did the sets on this tour. Each act would perform a few songs, invite one of the other acts to play a song or two with them, then let someone else come play for a bit. Each performer got to do a bunch of little sets throughout the night. Cary Brothers and Joshua Radin were the best of the night, but ingrid Michelson was pretty good too.

Concerts I wish I made it to:
Third Eye Blind / Howie Day
Anberlin at the Palladium
Jason Mraz!
Weezer
Vampire Weekend!!!

We talked to them and they tried to get us in but the guest list was already over booked. We ended up just hanging out in columbus all day.

All of these shows are in Toronto, except for one. I don't have a driver's license and can't afford to travel to a bunch of shows in the boondocks like some of you. Venues are listed just in case someone out there is from here.

11) Narcotized/Radio Revival, June 28 @ Reilly's -- This is just my friend's band and one of their opening acts. It was a fun night, finally seeing my friend drumming in a performance setting. The band dissolved, but they were very tight considering how short a time they had been together.

10) Ska Saves Lives Fest (Cheap Suits/The Expos/One Night Band/Stop Drop 'n' Skank/The Good Times), June21 @ The Reverb -- Great roster of Canadian ska bands, the Cheap Suits being my hands down favourite. My fourth time seeing them, I think? They played my shouted song request at the end of the set because the crowd was cheering for it.

9) Greg Proops, July 11 @ Comix Comedy Club in New York -- First visit to New York and this was a great way to cap it all off. Absolutely hysterical, especially for a Whose Line fanboy like myself.

8) Protest the Hero/Chiodos/From First to Last/Lights, April 25 @ The Sound Academy -- I seem to be the black sheep for thinking this, but Chiodos blew Protest out of the water at this show. Protest are one of my favourite bands, but they were off that night, possibly because of Rody's throat infection. Too bad Chiodos weren't nearly as good with Silverstein last month...

7) These Silhouettes/Emarosa, August 14 @ The Kathedral -- Dead and Divine headlined this show, but I'm not a fan of theirs. This made me a diehard Emarosa fan, and These Silhouettes are a great tiny club band. I even got to sing a lyric of a song. These Silhouettes recently disbanded however.

6) Silverstein/Protest the Hero/illScarlett/The Devil Wears Prada, February 8 @ Kool Haus -- In my opinion, Protest's best set of the seven I've seen. This was the last time I saw them before they discontinued Blindfolds Aside, and they were on top of their game. There was so much anticipation leading up to this show, the entire place was electric.

5) Barenaked Ladies, December 7 @ Massey Hall -- First REAL Ladies concert (I had seen them at a Chapters bookstore in the spring, promoting their kids' album), and it was astounding; I had been desperate to see some of my favourite songs live, and they played almost all of them. Welcome back, Steven Page.

4) Take Action Tour (Every Time I Die/From First to Last/The Bled/August Burns Red/The Human Abstract), March 19 @ The Phoenix -- I don't get to see enough shows at this venue. But this one was impeccable. As is the trend with me, this show made me an ETID fan, and on top of that, I got to climb on stage sporting a profuse nosebleed (kicked in the face by a crowd surfer). That rush over the barricade at the end was pretty fucking exhilirating. From First to Last were slightly disappointing live, but perhaps I was expecting too much from them.

3) Fall Out Boy, October 28 @ MuchMusic in the parking lot -- Not ideal circumstances for your first FOB show, I know, at a free, corporately sponsored outdoor show in frigid temperatures, but it was still superb and precisely what I needed at the time. A full hour and a half set free of charge is nothing short of impressive. Plus, they played four TTTYG songs and closed the set with I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy. Couldn't have asked for more... except maybe a jacket... and less domineering security (some other guy got thrown out for a pit I started).

2) Less Than Jake, January 19/September 25 @ The Sound Academy -- These two are tied for me, though the earlier date probably wins by a smidgeon, simply because it was 19+ and I got to watch from the balcony despite being under age. LTJ shows have become a spiritual experience for me, they're my all-time favourite band. Also, at the September show, Buddy fell off the stage and injured his ribs rather severely, so the set was truncated and didn't have Gainesville Rock City. Disappointing.

1) Warped Tour, July 19 @ Arrow Hall in the parking lot -- An absolutely unparalleled music experience. Every Time I Die's set was drenched in torrential rain, then the skies opened up again RIGHT when Protest started playing Bloodmeat. Plus, the day reunited me with an estranged friend and bonded me with a new one. I can't wait for the new lineups to be announced.

2. August 1st Brand New/Manchester Orchestra/Kevin Devine (even though my friend got sick during Brand New)
3. March 21st Say Anything/Manchester Orchestra/Biffy Clyro/Weatherbox

We went to a few of the same shows...I agree with #3, though I still maintain the Hold Steady and Drive By Truckers was the best show I saw all year.

that sucks. did you at least have fun in columbus? lol
and i love tim....him, max, and matt are always the nicest to talk to...although i must say max is my favorite :]
and yeah..my friend ended up not being able to go b/c she waited too long to buy her ticket...so i basically went alone, but i knew people that would be there, so it was all good.

Columbus was still fun but the concert would have been much more fun. I couldn't believe that it sold out so fast. I didn't think mayday parade was that big yet.

1. 09/18/08 - Sauget, IL - Pop's - EasyCore Tour: New Found Glory, A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, International Superheroes of Hardcore, and Crime in Stereo
2. 03/26/08 - Sauget, IL - Pop's - The Starting Line, Bayside, Four Year Strong, and Steel Train
3. 08/02/08 - Chicago, IL - Verizon Wireless Amphitheater - Warped Tour: Set Your Goals, Four Year Strong, and Against Me!
4. 07/07/08 - St.

2008 was a pretty good year actually.

your number 2 and 5 were stellar shows...Bayside on 3/26/08 was insane

I didn't see many shows this year, so this isn't a very big list.
Only three shows... damnit Vancouver, get more shows. D:
There's quite a few I wanted to see but didn't have time to make it to, so hopefully I can make it up in 2009.

1. Rise Against / Thrice / Alkaline Trio / The Gaslight Anthem - I had a really good time. Rise Against was amazing, as was Thrice. Alkaline Trio were alright, but didn't blow me away, which sucks since I like their music. Gaslight was awesome, but most people weren't in the venue yet or were buying merch... and you could tell nobody really knew much about them, which was a shame.

1. The Fall of Troy / Protest the Hero / Chiodos - Yes, a tie, since I couldn't decide which I liked better. The Fall of Troy was awesome, Chiodos had a solid set and Craig was having a great time pissing off the Protest fans that were telling him to get off the stage, and Protest was amazing as well. Rody is always hilarious to watch on stage and he has this amazing stage presence.

2. Sara Bareilles / Raining Jane - I had a good time. Sara has a great voice and played almost every song of hers. She got brownie points for covering Feist's I Feel It All. Also covered Sullivan Street by Counting Crows, but I'm not too familiar with them. Solid performance, and Gravity was an amazing end to the night. Raining Jane was hilarious and had some catchy folk-rock songs. Browntown will forever go down as one of the most epic songs to see live. The build up to it and the actual song were so hilarious, everyone in the audience was won over, despite most probably not knowing who they were.

1 - 3/15/08 - Yellowcard (acoustic), The Spill Canvas, Play Radio Play, Treaty of Paris @ Irving Plaza - NYC -
Yellowcard played a great set and it was much better than I expected. I loved hearing them open with Rough Draft.

2 - 11/26/08 - Forgive Durden @ Bowery Ballroom - NYC
Thomas Dutton is just incredible. This was the 2nd time in a little over a month that I saw Forgive Durden. Mainly because the majority of the kinks of the live show were fixed so it sounded much better than in State College.

3 - 8/5/08 - Jesse Lacey, Kevin Devine, Brian Bonz @ Mr. Small's - Millvale, PA
It was a fun roadtrip and a fun show.

4 - 3/18/08 - The Starting Line @ LuLu's - State College, PA
Enough said - last tour. It was so depressing but fantastic at the same time. Great set list, as well.

5 - 4/22/08 - Cartel @ LuLu's - State College, PA
Fantastic set list. They played basically everything I could ever want to hear. And I'm biased because I love Q/A and they played it back to back in the encore. And it was wonderful.

6 - 8/16/08 - Houston Calls @ School of Rock - South Hackensack, NJ
Houston Calls live shows are fun. And they played High Rise, which made me really happy.

This is certainly not an AP friendly list, but I have different preferences in music:

10. ***12/26/08*** - Worchester, MA - Reveille ( I know the show hasn't happened yet, but I know that it will be one of the best of the year, especially since it's a reunion show)

That should be a great show. I still have not bought my ticket. =/

2. The Starting Line w/ Bayside, Four Year Strong, & Steel Train - April 3rd, Slims in San Francisco.

3. Saosin w/ Armor For Sleep, Fear Before, Meriwether, and Thieves & Liars - Feb. 15th at The Underground in Roseville, and Feb. 16th at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz.

4. Yellowcard (acoustic) w/ The Spill Canvas, PlayRadioPlay, and Treaty of Paris - April 6th at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

5. New Found Glory w/ A Day to Remember, Four Year Strong, International Superheroes of Hardcore, and Crime in Stereo - Sept. 12th at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, Sept. 13th at The Phoenix Theater in Petaluma.

8. Melee w/ Matt White - Jan. 18th at Slim's in San Francisco.

9. Chevelle w/ I Hate Kate - May 30th at the Senator Theater in Chico, June 2nd at the Fillmore in San Francisco

10. Runner Runner - Oct. 30th at The Wire in Upland.
Yup, quoting myself.

I'm updating my choices, moving everything down one so I can put the show I'm going to Sunday in here.
So now, it's
1. - Fall Out Boy w/ Runner Runner - Dec. 21st at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

Because for me there's no way anything will beat that show, I already know it.

1 bamboozle @ the medowlands sports complex
just total awesomeness. so many amazing bands played that usually don't come to philly so it was great seeing bands like jimmy eat world, thrice and coheed. they were probably my three favorites. also I got to seem some major events in music history such as: the starting lines last show and a set of the movielife played by vinny cauana and set your goals. katy perry was of course the drawback of the day.

2 jack johnson @ the tweeter center
wow, this was most definitely my favorite set by any artist, ever! he's just as solid live as on the album, with quaint stories of how the songs or albums came about includes, along with a message of peace and environmentalism. he played the perfect set, I loved every song, even some of the ancient ones that I wasn't too familiar with. just perfection, the whole night. special thanks to HainzeyX for the tickets and nachos, best graduation gift of my lifetime.

3 death cab for cutie @ the mann center
first time I ever heard a band and cried. I guess I just have such a strong connection with their music I couldn't help it. they sounded even better than they did on the album, ben was dead on all night. the only thing that could make that night better would be a postal service song (not gonna happen) but regardless, it was perfect. thanks again for the tickets from HainzeyX!

4 bamboozle roadshow with saves the day @ the TLA
saves the day is just one of those bands that you just enjoy sooo much live. it was one of the funniest shows ever! he played a ton of request and about 30 songs. they played with set your goals, and wow do they have energy! they graciously supplied saves the day with lots o' shots! :)

5 fall out boy @ the northstar bar
I don't care who thinks these guys are sell outs, because no sell out plays a 300 person venue with no backstage and one stall bathrooms. I never respected a band more than I did them at that moment. they took request and phone calls from the audience from girls who asked them to play panic at the disco songs.....? aside from that patrick was absolutely breathtaking, that bluesy mother effer. pete stole the show with his energy, although he always looks high as a kite. loved this night, well worth the 8 hours in line, well worth it.

6 warped tour @ the tweeter center
warped tour as greatness as usual. I got to see anberlin for the first time, say anything for the 5th, and the devil wears prada with their metal-tiality. all awesome sets, overall just a great day, I could be more thriller about it. hopefully we'll get more bands this year though.

7 circa survive @ the first unitiatrian church
I've never seen a musician with more passion an excitement to play than anthony green, although it could just be the powder. either way, he played in the downstairs of a church in august/september-ish with NO A/C at all! he threw up on stage and also took most of his clothes off, that's how hot it was. major respect for him and his inconsistent lyrics.

8 silverstein with a skylit drive @ the electic factory
a skylit drive went on first, and there is a lottttt of voice (hight pitched voice) in that little ginger kid they have for a frontman. WOW. he was on it. it was a great performance. alasana look like a bunch of assholes with their powdered donut scene theme, all white? seriously? how bout you work on those vocals and leave john lennon circa 1972 alone. next was escape the fate, not memorable. chiodos was the usual. I'm bored by it, =/. silverstein was just, wow. they're just amazing at what they do. they may not be revolutionaries but they're some pretty passionate dudes. I never understood why they toured so much until I seen them live.

9 the starting line with bayside @ the electric factory
bayside was great, as always. anthony is one of my favorites live, I feel like I just can stop watching him, he's a really talented performer. the starting line was as awesome and sweaty as usual. with the combination of kenny's hard nipples and the bands excitement of playing their last tour, it was a great set. this was the last time I seen them headline before the break. unfortunately they played a really really long set. we left a little early because of it actually.

10 underoath with the devil wears prada & saosin @ the electric factory
the devil wears prada I think was 2nd and geez, do these guys love what they do. mike is one holy man, that's for sure. you can tell he means every word he says. he's incredible. I feel such a connection with them live. I'm not sure if its because of their christianity or if its just the music. to be honest, its probably the combo of both. I love this band. cove from saosin was a tad bit sick, but regardless he pulled though and did not let it tire him out. I loved their set, it was perfect. as for underoath, epic. just epic. no further analysis necessary. : )

honerable mention: matt costa @ the TLA

thanks for reading!

I definately didn't go to as many shows as I would have liked to this year, but most of the ones I went to were really solid. This is as close to an order I could come to as possible, but it blurred:

1. Kevin Devine
Bowery Ballroom (New York CIty)
January 19th, 2008

One of the best shows I've ever been to. Kevin Devine is an incredible preformer and seeing him play in New York with his friend an family there was just an awesome experience.

2. My Morning Jacket
Madison Square Garden (New York City)
December 31, 2008

My Morning Jacket are beasts. They played from 9pm til at least 1am with no opening band and only a 20 minute intermission before the countdown to the new year. The best possible way to spend New Years Eve.

3. Foo Fighters with Against Me!
Rosement Theater (Chicago)
February 22, 2008

Foo Fighters is one of my all time favorite bands. Dave Grohl is exactly what a rockstar should be.

4. Hot Water Music
The Metro (Chicago)
February 22, 2008

Such an amazing reunion show. I love to see bands come back together.

5. Lupe Fiasco
The Congress Theater (Chicago)
October 31, 2008

I've never been to a rap concert before but Lupe Fiasco was just fucking incredible. He put so much heart into his performance. They also recorded the show for a DVD.

6. Third Eye Blind
Loyola College (Chicago)
April 2008

Third Eye Blind is my favorite band. I just wish the show was in a better location. Either way they always put on an incredible show and any time they come around I will see them.

7. Say Anything with Manchester Orchestra
House of Blues (Chicago)
March 21, 2008

Say Anything is a damn fun live band. I just wish the crowd wasnt filled with teenie boppers.

8. Murder By Death with William Elliot Whitmore
The Metro (Chicago)
November 19, 2008

Murder By Death as been on my list of bands to see since I first heard In Bocca Al Lupo. Since then I've always missed their shows by a day or two. I finally got a chance to see them and they certainly did not disappoint. Incredible band.

9. Death Cab For Cutie
McCarren Park Pool (Brooklyn)
August 2008

Not the best show I've seen all year and it was cut short by a rain storm, but from what they played I enjoyed. It always nice to see a band in an outdoor setting.

10. Mike Birbiglia's Sleepwalk With Me
Off Boradway (New York City)
December 2008

I know it's not a concert but it is an incredible one man show by one of my absolute favorite comedians. If you live in or around New York City, I highly recommend seeing this show.

1. Lil Wayne @ Harbor Arena (very close to the stage, one of my favorite rappers so obviously #1)
2. Warped Tour @ Nassau Coliseum (The Human Abstract/Protest The Hero/ETID/Say Anything/Norma Jean/All That Remains)
3. Underoath/Saosin/The Devil Wears Prada @ Webster Theater (extremely fun show, I saw them during the period in my life where I couldn't stop listening to either UO or Sao)
4. TIED (a) The Mars Volta @ Lupo's AND (b) Thursday/The Sleeping/The Dear Hunter @ Toad's Place (both were really fun shows)
5. TIED (a) Lupe Fiasco @ UConn (hell yeah, I missed him at Glow in the Dark) AND (b) Immortal Technique @ UConn (free show, I had to put it in somewhere and he is also sick with it)
6. Glow In The Dark (I missed Lupe and most of N.E.R.D. but Kanye (and Rihanna's covers) were dope)
7. Dear Hunter @ Wilton Trackside Center (ranked not as high only because I had not listened to them before this show, but if I had listened Dear Hunter before this would probably be like #4 or somethin)
8. Stone Temple Pilots @ PNC Bank Arts Center (good show but pretty far from stage and Scott Weiland was definitely coked out)
9. T-Pain/Flo Rida/Meth & Red @ UConn (T-Pain is mad funny live, just because this is last does not mean it was a bad show)

i have to ask....

why do you people see so many shows in a year? doesnt that de-value your concert going experience by seeing every band you "kinda" like...or even seeing a band you love millions of times?

im not trying to talk down, im just curious.

i really just love the atmosphere of concerts..i can just go and have a good time and forget everything for a while...i'm pretty much never happier than when i'm at a concert
plus i've seen some bands so many times they recognize me and start up conversations, and are really closer than some "friends" i have now ( i know that sounds lame, i don't really care though. i'm not talking like the 14 year olds that are like "OMG alex gaskarth said he loved me....we are sooo bff's", i mean i talk to them about stuff i'd talk to friends about)

i do worry that i'll burn out on shows, but it hasn't happened yet. plus it's not like i travel forever for most of the shows i go to...most of them are like right down the street, so it's like, eh, what else do i have to do? lol

I agree with wheresadalia in the aspect of the atmosphere, I love concerts and go to school 20 minutes away from St. Louis so it's not really that big of a deal, and it takes away my stress for a few hours, I don't go to a RIDICULOUS amount like some people do where it's once every other day, but like I go to Warped Tour every year (at least for the past 7 summers), then I go to 10 or so local shows then see 15 to 25 bigger tours a year, that's the average for me per year....plus a lot of bands are better live and by seeing them live makes me get into their CDs a lot more, I was only casual fans of Between the Trees, Steel Train, The Matches, etc but when I saw them live then it translated to me liking their albums a lot more

For me, I am fourtnate enough to get in to 85%-90% of the shows I go to for free, which is why I go to so many shows. To me there is nothing like a concert -- it's (usually) a fun time and I just forget about "problems" for a couple hours.

Granted, I've seen a lot of bands I only semi-enjoy and usually I get boreed quick but it's free and nothing else better to do. Plus it also makes me apperciate the bands i really love more because I truly get excited to see them and go to the show.

Quite the opposite for me, actually. I average 45+ "touring band" shows a year, and personally it adds so much to the concert experience the more times I see a band, because it creates more memories and funny stories, etc. to tell my friends when I get home.

And I've been lucky, I love a lot of bands and have seen a lot of those bands quite a few times, and no two shows or experiences no matter how many in a row or how many on a tour have ever been the same.

Music has been my one love since I was little, and live music in particular is my passion, so that might bias my POV a little. But I know of so many friends and memories that I wouldn't have that I would miss so much if I didn't go to shows the way I do now.
