Surprise! Obama not a radical liberal

To the relief (or perhaps dismay) of many conservatives, it appears as though President-elect Barack Obama is not the radical socialist, terrorist sympathizing, going to destroy the country, America-hating liberal as initially feared (wait, on second thought, we can’t give him a pass just yet since he hasn’t yet been inaugurated).

Obama has quietly assembled one of the most moderate cabinets in American history. He has kept Bush appointee Robert Gates on as Secretary of State, designated John McCain supporter James Jones as National Security Advisor, and named foreign policy moderate Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. He has assembled an economic team of free-trade centrists and appointed Paul Volcker (fed chairman under the Reagan administration) to head his economic recovery team.

Paradoxically, Obama’s choices have been praised more by Republicans than the liberal wing of his own party. This leads one to believe that he is more concerned about moving the country out of the economic crisis and finding solutions to our conflicts in the middle east rather than relying on pure ideology. One cannot imagine how the conservative wing of the Republican Party would have reacted had George W. Bush pursued the same bipartisan spirit (Colin Powell being the only moderate in his first term cabinet) in his presidency.

No matter how Obama governs, there will always be a small population who will remain convinced he is an illegitimate president. The fringe group of conspiracy theorists still clinging on to the widely debunked myth of Obama not being a natural-born citizen (http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html) will press on. The racist charlatans like talk-show host Michael Savage will use every chance to refer to him as “Barack Hussein Obama” to insinuate that he is a secret Muslim. Unfortunately, their desperate hopes of Obama instituting Sharia Law (so they will have been proven “right all along”) will never come to pass.

In the meantime, Obama will continue to lay the foundation for a centrist presidency that values transparent and pragmatic government that works to actually solve the problems we face.
