Too much political bullshit, not enough MUSIC. Even when it's not political, it's just not Green Day -- they've lost their quality on this new album.I have their older CDs on my shelf but American Idiot is complete garbage in every sense. Holy shit.
That is easily the BEST music video I have ever seen.
This one cuts to the core.
Green Day has accomplished a great feat here, saying so much through a music video about so many things.
This is their best video to date, and arguably the best video that has been made.
I got chills watching this, and I might've teared up a little.
Don't go to war and leave your girl behind, kids. Just don't. Especially not this war.
EDIT: This video is especially poignant to someone like me, who is 18, and does not want to go to war. And won't. Not over something fucked up like this.
Bush can take his war-mongering finger and shove it.
And to all you naysayers on this video, I don't understand how you couldn't be affected by it emotionally. These are very real issues happening to VERY real people.
Let me reiterate my original statement. THIS WAR IS NOT JUST. It's not worth it.
Sorry for that little rant, but this one really got to me.

Before replying to this I half-considered you weren't even worth my time.
But then I reconsidered.
They were not trying to attempt a video showing "youth", they were showing an AMAZING example of what REAL people are going through every day. Lives falling apart for reasons out of our control, feeling lost, and feeling betrayed. In this case, the usage of a barely-18 year old boy going off to war beacause he thinks it's the "right thing to do", which in turn breaks his girlfriend's heart, shows us what happens when war presents these choices. War is a TERRIBLE thing, and with this video, Green Day has made it apparently clear. I don't understand how this did not move you emotionally. Perhaps if it was your brother going off to fight for idealistic reasons, then maybe you'd feel differently. This war, above all others, is unjust, and simply wrong.

Despite Greem Day's views on the war, which are obvious, I think there should have been some sort of message at the end of the video dedicating it to the troops. I was lucky enough to see this band at SUNY Binghamton for only 20 bucks in April and despite how much I love them, I really feel their leftist views on the war have really overshadowed any shred of compassion they have.
To me this video is just attacking this kid for joining the armed forces. It is almost like Billie Joe is saying "If you join the war, you will hurt your loved ones and probably die. Fuck you soldier." Has any member of Green Day come out and stated publicly that they support the troops in Iraq? Not all of our servicemen are off molesting prisoners. Most are fighting this war because of George Dubya, or because they signed up for the armed forces in an effort to better their own lives through college scholorship (which is growing). Despite your political beliefs, you should still respect and support the troops.
Green Day ( I know I will get bashed for this) really need to come back down to earth. This video does not show any support for the young men and women risking their lives everyday.

its nice to see a video with alot of thought put behind it. with american idiot being an political album, the way this songs video was used to show this situation is amazing. its something almost everyone can relate to. he thought he was man enough to join the army...and soon realised it was a mistake leaving all the things he loved behind. i wonder if there was anyone who had their lives at home destroyed by them joining the army?
an awesome video, and i especially like thae fact it actulaly has a very very sound narrative.

So here's the thing that too many people aren't getting. This video isn't trying to be political. The way wars used to be in America and in most other countries was that somehow, EVERYONE had to make some sort of sacrifice, whether at home or abroad. And when that happens to a country, everyone becomes united behind one cause, which clearly didn't happen this time around. This war has been completely different, and what Green Day is trying to showcase is that WAR SUCKS, regardless of why we're there or any of the details. Because not everyone has had to make a sacrifice this time around, and feel that very real pinch, they've shown just one person's (although a fictional person, a very real situation) life and how they've felt the pinch. If you think Billie Joe is trying to say "Fuck Bush" with this video, I hope you never get involved in politics because you're an idiot.

you are missing the point. they DON'T support the troops. why do so many people believe in this rule that everyone has to support the troops. they chose to be there, and it doesn't matter if they did it becuase they needed the money for college or they just wanted to kill somebody, the fact is they are there. if somebody offered to pay for you to go to college if you offed a few people for them, would you do it? if somebody else did it, would you tell everyone to support them becuase they really needed the money to "better their life through college scholarship"? if there was a draft preceeding this war, i am sure green day and pretty much everyone who agrees with their views would have taken a much different stand regarding the war. they would have still spoken out against the president but at the same time they would have fought to get the troops out of iraq who didn't want to be there. but there wasn't a draft, so there is no reason to feel sympathy for our troops. they chose to be where they are, some may have left loved ones like the kid in this video, but it was their choice alone. sure many other bands will bash the war while still "supporting the troops," but have you ever thought that maybe that was because they were afraid of losing alot of fans if they said they didn't really support the troops. unfortunately that is very plausible scenario. that is why i applaud green day for this video, because i'm glad to see somebody with a large voice finally coming out and saying that signing up for the military is a huge mistake.
think about this: if nobody in the military or thinking of joining the military had agreed to go to iraq, what would bush have done? he would have either started a draft and lost any chance he had of getting re-elected, or just changed his mind about the war. do you see how we are capable of making a difference? of course this would never happen because most if not all of those in the miliarty agreed with the motivation behind this unjust war, making them really no better than bush himself.
