Artist Vs Poet - Artist Vs Poet EP
Record Label: Fearless Records
Release Date: November 18, 2008

Sometimes relations can hurt a band. Case in point, Artist Vs Poet: sure, they're signed to Fearless Records, and they come from the same area as Forever the Sickest Kids, but does that mean they're just like their peers? The answer is yes, and no. While they do sound like their fellow Texans and Fearless Records labelmates, there are some notable differences which make their self-titled debut EP an enjoyable listen.

The EP begins with the track "Runaway," an extremely catchy song with a chorus tailor-made for shouting at the top of your lungs. Many of the other songs break free from the straight-up powerpop of the opener to include more of an indie-style flair to them. "Infallible Remedy" offers the best mix of the band's powerpop meets indie style. One of the more weaker tracks on the EP is the closer, "All In," which sounds like a Mayday Parade-esque acoustic ballad.

Despite the uniqueness of the songs found on Artist Vs Poet, the band definitely doesn't separate themselves from their peers when it comes to the songwriting. At various times throughout the EP, the band falls victim to same old cliche lyrics found in pop-rock. Take, for example, this lyric: "You tell me that you want me to tell me that you need my baby" (taken from "Lisa Marie"). This though, is far and few between.

All in all, Artist Vs Poet has delivered a standout EP that should help get their name out there in the scene. Hopefully they won't be overshadowed by their bigger labelmates as they've created a unique sound that begs to be heard.

I feel the same way now that I've had it for a few months.
