I don't have any problem with that. Radiohead's not my favorite band at all and nowhere close to what I would rather listen to most of the time, but I would never say that they're better than Radiohead esp not in every way possible, because in the aspect of complexity Radiohead is light-years ahead of almost anyone.

oh, comely is great. and holland, 1945. the rest of the album sounds stale to me. i'd say 'oh, comely' could take the place of transatlanticism's title track (one of my lesser favorites on the album), and 'holland, 1945' could take the place of 'expo '86' (the only filler song on that cd). other than that, there are no more songs on ITAOTS that are better than anything on trans.

Absolutely. Speaking from a writing perspective, you can hear what standard music should do as it progresses through a song and even predict what comes next sometimes, and it's much harder to write a song that is never predictable, is always interesting, always catching you off-guard. Radiohead uses ideas and music theory concepts that rank closer to the likes of professional composers than rock music. They rarely stay within a given 8note scale or use normal functioning chords; they always involve nonchord tones and dissonances. They use polyrhythms and time signature changes and metric modulations that I, as a percussion major, still don't understand a good portion of the time. I feel like giving examples is not actually going to help much if you're not musically inclined so I guess a good way to explain is that most bands, even really good ones like Death Cab and Modest Mouse, only go so far in the musical inclination and incorporation of the deeper aspects of music writing, almost no one except Radiohead actually. They write on a whole different level.
