I used to be really big into Christian music. I'm not even sure if I'd consider myself a Christian anymore, so I rarely listen to Christian music these days. But there are a few I will still swear by.....

The Violet Burning - some of their stuff is "preachy" but a lot of it is controversial by CCM standards. Check out the self titled album on Domo records, one of the most beautiful albums ever recorded. Think what the Smashing Pumpkins would sound like if you slowed them down and added a lot of spacey trippy guitar sounds and some exotic percussion. Or maybe The Cure with a lot more distortion and screaming. Simply beautiful music.

Caedmon's Call and their various offshoots (especially Derek Webb) - folksy, poppy, rather preachy, yet very intelligent music. The sort of stuff that gets you thinking about your beliefs, even if they're completely different than theirs. Also pretty catchy stuff for the most part.

Cool Hand Luke - mostly their earlier stuff. They started off kinda metalcore/mathrock-ish sounding, and somehow evolved into sounding like Coldplay. But for a few years they were amazing, the only band I've ever heard to play a song in 13/8 with a violin solo and perform with their backs facing the crowd.

This I know . Similarly my band does not use the term on a regular basis either and we are a band of believers. But if you are asking which bands are Christian or which bands believe in God (which is what we are doing here) I don't have a problem with using the term as I did there. Perhaps I should have simply stated "non-metal bands I love who believe in God" hehe.

It is, as you put it, the act of constantly and actively promoting yourself as a "Christian Band" specifically to appeal to Christians that brings negative connotation to that phrase. If someone asks me if we are a Christian Band I generally respond with "Everyone in our band believes in God and the majority of our lyrics deal with our personal relationship with him"

Of course.
It couldn't be that the people in the band are all believers, playing music for Jesus as an expression of worship and don't mind if people know that. Of course not.

Also, you might want to look into the fact that the christian market is much, much smaller then the general market so they're really gaining no sales by doing so.

The christian market is the general market. Name me one mainstream artist who doesn't thank "god" in some way in their little artwork booklet that comes with the album. Obviously there's mainstream artists who aren't christian but they're still typically thanking some greater being.

And I'm sorry, if the only reason you're creating music is to worship Jesus, than you're a huge tool in my book.
