Andrew McMahon, lead singer of the pop/rock acts Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, has been diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia. Treatment of his condition, from which his doctors believe he will fully recover, according to a statement, necessitates the cancellation of the upcoming tour plans for both bands.
Jack's Mannequin has been on the road for a few weeks and has dates scheduled through a June 13 stop in Dallas. Announcing a cancellation last week prior to his diagnosis, McMahon took to the band's official Web site to express his guilt about not being able to play the gig.

Andrew, the most important thing to us is your health. Seeing you treated properly and being brought back to full health as soon as possible is first and foremost in all of our minds right now. You are one of the hardest-working and most energetic singers in the music business, and you should take that energy and put into fighting this as hard as you can.
Good luck, Andrew. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your family, and your friends.

oh my God. that is so so so awful. we were just talking about this one teacher at our school who's husband was diagnosed with that disease as well. he is such a swell guy who chaperoned our senior trip.
anyways, most insurance covers treatment but in order to possibly cure the disease you need a bone marrow transplant and the money to screen just the donors themselves can go well into $2,000 each. we are holding a fundraiser dance for him next week. we should try and do something like that for andrew.
both are in my prayers. :(

Yes it is.
Believe it or not, I actually work in the University of Iowa's Hospital/Clinics in cancer research. We do work looking for causes/cures/treatments for this sort of cancer. He's INCREDIBLY lucky that they caught it early before it metastasizes (spreads) and that it's in his lymphatic system. They'll probably just remove his infected areas and hope to god that it hasn't spread.
At least, this is hopefully what they do. Chemotherapy = not cool.
Get well soon.

Tate, is there any way you can organize either an eBay auction or a raffle using donations through PayPal? We can take the proceeds and use them to: (a) help pay for his treatment, and (b) use the remainder for a donation to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or towards the Syrenthia Savio Endowment Fund (the Shirts for a Cure people).
Or, we can start making and selling red bracelets like Lance Armstrong's, except with the SoCo logo/lyrics/etc. (I think that may be a bit too elaborate, but it's worth looking into at least).

As I'm sitting here thinking about the past few years of my life, there's a musical score accompanying it and it made me realize how important his words have been to me. I hope that he makes a full recovery, but if we (the fans) can't be there for somebody who gave himself to us for so long then we have no right listening to this music. The very least would be sending cards or anything to him....anyone willing to spearhead this, please do.
After seein him tour with Jacks Mannequin, my respect for him went up 100x.
I'm up for helping him out any way I can..

the people of punknews are really sad and pathetic for even letting people post that garbage about karma and death wishes. As a person who has watched several family members die of different cancers, I understand the reality and fear that goes through it. If I ever had someone telling me that my aunt was a shitty mother and she deserved to die while she had cancer, I don't know what I'd do. It's not right to pull that kind of stunt on anyone, even musicians that don't compose your type of music. I don't know how decent of a guy Andrew is, but I know that no one deserves any kind of cancer or the type of shit they are pulling at punknews. I'm glad there is at least one music site that does not want to punish other people for the music they make. People coming together during these times is by far the best thing to ever give to a person who is going though something like this. I'm done with my rant...and I hope ya get well soon Andrew.

You should make 2 polls one in the general forum and one in the news forum to see hom many people would actually buy one. Price? You shouldn't charge too much it all depends on how much they cost to buy. The rest of the money? all the money would go towards him and his hospital bills, wouldn't it?

Honestly dude, the best way to do it is set up a paypal account and let people pay that way. Polls are awesome until people dont put their money where their mouth is and you get screwed. If for some reason it doesnt work out or whatever, you can just refund their money through that. I know a lot of kids dont have paypal/credit cards, but it's a lot easier than accepting/refunding cash.
If you sold 200, they're 400 dollars or so. Sell them for 2.50 and it'll cover your paypal fees and the stamp to send them. If you want to know exact postage I can check the meter at work on monday, since it might be more than .37 cents to send it. 5 dollars even would provide a nice donation to the cause and cover costs. Also, there might be cheaper places. I'll look around LA and see what I can find, but probably wont be able to get ahold of anyone until Monday.
Given my scenepoints and your lack of response to other issues I've tried to help with, I doubt you'll want it, but I offer my help in any way possible. I've got an internship during the work week and nothing to do on nights/weekends. I have the time.

I'd buy a few of those lyric bracelets if they were made, I think it is an awesome idea.

It's really awesome to see all the AP members willing to contribute. While I didn't like their newer stuff, i used to LOVE soco, and Andrew has always seemed like a nice dude... he's changed a lot of people's lives through his music (just look at Jac) - let me know if there's anything I can do as well, I want to help.

i would for sure buy at least one, probably a couple more for other people.
and to echo what other people have said, this fucking sucks. andrew is an awesome guy, and something corporate is one of my favorite bands. in the past 2 days, i have not listened to anything but something corporate.
also i was wondering, do people know exactly how serious this is? cause its obviously very serious, but is it in any way life threatening?
It's cancer. That is life threatening. It seems that they caught it early, so odds are in his favor thank God, but there's always the chance it could spread.

Don't you watch Conan? I'll let Max explain it to you...
but anyways this is my third post in this topic and i really cant say enough that i wish for his quick recovery. Anything that can be done to help, we should organize soon. Big ups to everyone who's posted in this thread, this community has a lot of heart. At a time like this Andrew could probably really use it, too. I'll keep him in my thoughts, it's horrible to see this happen to anyone, but to see it happen to a guy who's honestly changed the way I look at music over the last few years, it's just worse. Really hope he gets well as soon as possible.

people always say shit like this and it sounds so naive. no matter what form of spirituality your talking about, a life on earth where everything is perfect makes no logical sense. what would the point of an afterlife be if being human was without troubles? if nothing ever went wrong then there would be no way to judge what kind of a person you are.

Wow, this is my favorite band. Andrew is my biggest inspiration in music, and one of the nicest people ive ever met. As said before to me this feels like a friend or family member is sick, not just a musician. His music has helped me thru many hard times. All I can say is my prayers go out to him.
Also to everyone at punknews.org, I dont evev know what to say to you, after reading what some of you say it just makes me sad and wanna cry. The fact that you could wish death on anyone makes me question what you believe in and why your even here. Its awful that this is what are world has come to. Also to top if off, this is a man who has given everything he has in him to see others smile rather then himself. All I can say is i just feel sorry for all of you and the fact you could ever say that about anyone, cuz its not a joke and its not funny
Andrew, I'm pulling for you, and cant wait to see you show how strong you are.

i think the bracelets are a great idea. i think if people on here told their friends and everything you''d sell tons. i'd buy one, and i know alot of people who love soco but dont hit up this site that much. so if everyone just spreads the word... im sure they'd make alota $.
and as for punknews... i read one reply and im pretty sure that was enough. don't even read it. i can't really get pissed off at em because they're just idiots. so i feel more pity towards them than anger. if they had the brain capacity to fully comprehend what was going on with him and how terrible this disease is, im sure they'd be less heartless.

Here's the whole thing for anyone who wants to read it...
I just spoke with Andrew about the situation and he wanted to pass along all of his thanks for your support and understanding. I can't tell you how much he appreciates it. "It's kind of an odd place to be at because it's mostly younger kids or older people," he commented. To document the process, he's setup a video camera. "I want everyone to see that I'm not dying or anything." He mentioned that he was probably going to have his hair shaved tomorrow to begin the chemotheary. He's back in Cali where he will stay during treatment. "I have the best doctors here so I'm in a good place... I was born to fight!" he commented with a chuckle. He's very positive about this and he knows we all have his back during this extremely trying time for him...
He's requested that the CD not be pushed back and it will be out in August. He wishes he could be out there touring and promoting but he wants the music to be out there no matter what. Whatever happens after that will just flow however it will. An official statement will be put up on JacksMannequin.com on Monday or so for those interested. Please check there in the next week to read it.
In the coming week, we're going to be putting together a way to support lymphatic leukemia research, or leukemia research as a whole. I will post details when they are available.
I urge all of you to keep Andrew in your prayers. He's being very positive and the outlook is the same. His doctors are top notch, he is in good hands.
It's really good to hear he has such a positive attitude about everything.
My best wishes are with him.

People could easily say the same about this site's user base. But that's not the point. People always shittalk somewhere on the internet. You kids here get mad at shittalkers on punknews, then, in turn, shittalk them. It's a neverending cycle.
No, not every commeny on punknews' story is negative. In fact, up until recently, most comments were positive; the problem comes with a few users who are very vocal and very sarcastic/negative/whathaveyou.
The people who comment on punknews are such an incredibly small part of the site's actual daily visitors that it is unfair to assume that whatever is said as a comment is "the Punknews opinion."

The support this site and everyone on her has shown Andrew is more than enough to take out those who feel the need to make nasty horrid comments on other sites.
As for everyone's ideas for fundraising, they're excellent. As someone who lives with an illness I know how terrible hospital bills can be. I have racked up about $4,000 in the past 6 months and the majority is just doctors visits. With an excellent insurance plan we have only been responsible for about $500 of it, but the bills that come in with any form of cancer are 4 or 5 times what I have had minimum. They could easily reach 10 times that. I know the last thing that Andrew would want is us reaching into our own pockets, but I also know we will all do it anyways.
About the bracelets I think that is an amazing idea. Definitely the lyrics from "Watch The Sky" as Andrew has said that is his favorite song... either "I Won't Let This Get Me" or "I Will Fight" . I can look into it and find out some info. Does anyone know Andrew's fave color? Or can think of a good color?

Scott, dude, go read the comments to that story...it's pretty ridiculous don't you think? I don't "Shit-talk" punknews, nor have I ever. I've been going there for as long as I have this site, so there's no point. But you have to admit, as I've always noticed, that sometimes the responses there are just lame. The same happens here, but usually at pno they are more hateful. I'm not saying it's a good representation of the people who go there, because it surely doesn't represent me, but nonetheless you have to admit it exists. And yeah, it happens here too, but that story's responses were pretty immature don't you think? You don't need to get all defensive about my comments, they were directed to the kiddies who responded immaturely there, and not the site as a whole.

I think this is a great idea, but how exactly would this be organized? Are we sure the funds would go to the proper place? Who or what would get the funds from these bracelets? These are things that are important to consider before purchasing even begins.
Is this something that Maverick Records could deal with?

"I will fight" lyric is a real good choice also.

You would.... typical.
I would what? Defend a site I've put my life into for the past 5 years? Yeah, I would. We have some asshole users. So do you. The end.
Sorry, Ryan, I wasn't just directing my comments at you -- you just were the most recent post about it to reply to at the time. I just get sick of every kid on this site thinking Punknews is the devil or something. As I just posted, yes, we have some asshole users. Yes, so do you. Unfortunately, with a story like this, our assholes come out of the woodwork. If the story in question was about Matt Freeman's lung cancer (which may or may not even be true), you can better believe there'd be 500 comments on the story talking about how everyone was so sad and how they would do whatever it would take to help him, a la this post. It's just diffferent strokes for different folks.
It also doesn't help that Andrew is (vaguely) associated with a record label that threatened to sue us before. People always remember.
Anyway, this discussion isn't about Punknews, it's about a dude who for all intents and purposes just got proper fucked. It made me really happy to see people come up with the idea of the bracelets; I think that's awesome (although I'm kind of sick of people saying "I would buy hundreds, seriously," because you and I both know you won't. It's just implausible).
You all should stop saying how you WOULD buy a bunch of bracelets, and do research as to how you CAN.
Why not try e-mailing an organization that uses bracelets and see if they will supply you with a vendor's contact information? I'm going to e-mail ONE.

Hahah! That's kewl, but you do realize that if we or anyone does put a person in charge aside from Andrew's Record Label or Fan Club or Associates that it leaves that person with a lot of money and potential to be dishonest about the whole deal. For all we know, the money could end up not going to Andrew at all.
I think the best approach would be to contact Andrew's representatives and record label and ask them what they think would be the best idea in regards to supporting Andrew in his current condition. Why should anyone else except Andrew and those that are in his business decide the best way to support him financially but those who are in direct contact with him?

We're trying to get this taken care of in an organized fasion... I don't think it's just talk of how people "would" buy them... it's impossible to do so until they can.

Indeed. This would be fascilitated easiest if his representatives gave some sense of direction.

That's what I was thinking this whole time. Whoever wants to help should just wait to see if a foundation or a paypal gets set up before jumping into anything. The bracelet idea is great, but should be reffered to someone with power who can actually set it up and get it out there; not some random AP user.

I'm part of "The Messengers," Jack's Mannequin Street Team and I recently posted a topic (http://maverick.fanpimp.com/themessengers/index.html?fuseaction=forum.viewtop ic&t=2143) in regards to the bracelets and/or any way to help support Andrew in his current condition. If there is a reply from his PR staff I will let you all know.

If you wanna spin
Get yourself back in the game again
Throw down your money
Maybe you could win
But this world won't stop
So never stop, just spin
If anyone figures out what's up with this, please keep everyone posted. My little brother works at a small merch company that does full color buttons (1" ) for $14.00 for 100, with discounts given in large quantities. If anyone's interested in doing something like this (buttons as well as bracelets), PM me with something (Jason or Frank, I'm looking in your direction).

SoCo-online.net reported that andrew had said "I have the best doctors here so I'm in a good place... I was born to fight!" ...i think if someone does infact make the bracelets that "i was born to fight" would be perfect for them. andrew our prayers are with you.

Questions That Need To Be Answered
Lyrics: "I Will Fight" ? ... That seems to be pertinent to the situation and one a lot of people agree with, as well as being a lyric from Andrew's favorite SoCo song.
Color: Red? Blue? Something different that would stand out?
Price: Most places seem to run about $2-3 once they would have to be re-shipped out to whoever bought them and still be a profit left to go to Andrew/charity.
Who's Buying?: I know many many SoCo fans would buy one or more, but we would have to get the word out and figure out if there is enough and how many to order.
Who's In Charge?: Once we as fans come up with something someone is going to have to front the cash or we could possibly e-mail Maverick or whoever else is connected with Andrew and telling them we have garnered support and would love if they would make this their way to raise money whether for Andrew's bills or for a charity involved with Leukemia research, whichever Andrew wishes.

This has the potential to be bigger than just SoCo fans. The simple lyrics "I Will Fight" fit just about anything, and with the proper backing (Maverick/Geffen/Drive Thru/whoever) and charity organizations involved, this could be something amazing.
Let's not forget Scott Gottlieb either.

Maverick is already working on something and there are plenty of ideas on the table. One thing to remember: this shouldn't become a profit scam that it has the potential to become.

dude i had that! it sucks, i was out of school for a year even though they caught it early too. i won't expect soco or jack's mannequin to be touring anytime soon.
wow. unbelieveable.
Let's not forget Scott Gottlieb either.
My first thought when I heard this news was that this felt like Scott all over again. Ironically enough, I was at a Something Corporate show on April 10 when I heard the news that Scott had passed away.

just to let everyone know.. there are about 3 bracelet ideas going on right now.
mine was to make them orange (that color is associated with leukemia) and they were going to either say 'A Superhero in my world' or Nothings gonna blow me way.'
ideas are still up in the air.

No offense but I think the people at Maverick would like to hear about something like this though. I would think we as SoCo/JM fans know what we want to support better than they do. They would probably think it was awesome if someone handed them a ready made idea they could potentially use.
I also highly doubt it's going to become a profit scam. I know I won't send my money to just anyone nor would most of the people on here. hence why we want to keep Tate involved as well as possibly talking to Maverick.

I wouldn't pursue anything. There needs to be one consensus. No one is going to support 3 different things. How? I don't know. Possibly voting? This needs to be uniform. I really think we should stick to the lyrics "I Will Fight" because I know Andrew has said in more than one interview that songs is his favorite and it is so fitting of the situation. But I don't know. Really I think some sort of vote or something needs to go on.

except for that song is about hating yourself. it's not set in stone that i'm doing it or anything, it was just an idea and i've gotten over 100 responses about people wanting to buy them.. plus another 100 on them wanting to buy the other ones too.

That particular lyric is about fighting against yourself though, becoming a strong person. The song is actually about learning to not hate yourself. Besides the fact both fo your phrases are well over the 14 character limit unless your planning on ordering over 500 bracelets with your own funds at $1.50 each. I was just saying I wouldn't do anything right now. If you want to try and help for a consensus that is great. So while I think it is cool that you're trying to do this, and you have the support of people I think there needs to be some sense of organization and democracy to it. A poll or something? I don't know.
EDIT Does anyone know if you can make poll on here... or just a place in general where we could make a poll?
this sucks a ton... i owe most of the music i like today to leaving through the window almost 4 years ago....
thank you Andrew for Hurricane, Woke Up in a Car and Konstantine which inspired one of my multimedia projects in highschool (the piano was great to juxtapose with the overall joke of the short).
Add to this that Jacks Mannequin brought back all those feelings from LTTW and this is a real bummer.
Add to that the fact that SOmething Corporate loyally plays summerfest in milwaukee every summer (where i live in the summers) i'm even more bummed.
Add to this I grew up in Monterrey, Mexico wherest I introduced all sort of pop/punk to the mexicans there.... to the point where Something Corporate played pretty much every week at every friday night houseparty....
But above all, add to all this that one of my best friends from Mexico, Rogelio Rangel, from Germany, goes to see SOmething Corporate play at some small club in Germany one summer and apparently ends up hanging out with the band for a little while, which had such an impact on the guy he had to tell me about it while i was halfway around the world.... then sees Andrew again months and months later in Texas, who actually remembers him....
and, well, it just makes me pissed that shitty things happen to good people.
If you're reading this, Andrew, know that you've had the chance to live a life that most people only dream of, and know that you've done it while making great tunes and maintaining your personal integrity.... i've never met you, but it was your lyrics that I'd be drunkenly screaming on the winding roads in mexico after a long night of partying.... and for that, I thank you.

I think everyone should hold off on any fan-based bracelet ideas. I'm almost positive that Maverick is doing them.

As far as the bracelets go, that is an idea that everyone at maverick is working on. I know that everyone wants them so were working on it. I have been in close contact with Andrew and he is feeling much better so lets make everyone aware of this type of cancer. I know that we are working hard to get an official band /bracelet designed for andrew. So if you think of any cool slogans that you think should be on them....post them here or email them to me. We have some really good ideas so far and are going to be having a meeting on monday about them

...I read the initial post about Andrew having laryngitis or something, so I skipped over the next few that had to do with him, figuring it was an update or more cancelled shows or something. But this morning I was looking at news and saw this post for the silicon band things, so I got confused. I just went back and read some of the posts after the laryngitis one.... and oh my god.
The statistic they throw around in college classes is that 1 out of 3 people will die of cancer in our lifetimes. With such a high occurence, I always wondered why it didn't happen to more people I knew.
Then something like this happens.
SoCo was the first band of this kind of genre that I ever saw headline. August 26, 2002. I can't forget the date because I was always so thankful that show had been my doorway to emo and post-punk and pop-punk and whatever stupid label we're calling it now. The enegry I felt that night; the way the audience was screaming and dancing and loving that band... it made me a fucking believer.
This hurts on a level I can't even begin to describe. Prayers and positivity, Andrew. I hope you make it.
