But of course saying it with the "in a strictly heterosexual way" is gonna force people to call me gay. Go ahead, ruin DJ's thread!

I was a vegitarian for four years. It started out for a girl, as it almost always does, but after she paid no attention I just kind of stuck with it...for the purpose of meeting other girls. It was a good way to break the ice, and they all thought I was sensitive, buahahahaha. But now I eat meat, cause I never actually got a girl...

Vegan -- Does not eat anything derived from animals and does not use any animal-derived products
Lacto-ovo -- Permits eating milk, eggs and cheese as these can be produced without killing the animal. In some cases, for health reasons, lacto-ovo vegetarians will only eat non-fat forms of dairy products.
Pesci -- Permits the eating of fish and seafood, but no meat from land-based animals or birds.

Aren't humans meant to eat meat? That doesnt mean we should abuse the priviledge (think about all the meat that gets wasted from surplus killings every year) but isn't it part of our "human instincts" to eat the stuff? I find it just as terrible to rely on protein supplementing products which probably waste more energy and resources to create than meat does to be prepared. I think you should just eat what people were meant to eat.
And anyways, meat is good.

i became vegetarian then i got sick and my doctor said that i have a very small amount of red blood cell and i can get leukemia if i continue.
so yeah i chose that they are the ones that should die for me to live.
got out of peta2.
now im 3/4 carnivore : )
You can't get leukemia from being a vegetarian. While it's true that having an abnormally high number of white blood cells is a major symptom of leukemia, a vegetarian diet does not cause this. This is caused by a mutation in your DNA.
Feel free to correct me on my definition of leukemia because it may be wrong, but I am almost 100% certain a vegetarian diet will not cause leukemia. That's absolutely ridiculous.

i dont understand vegtarians and vegans they always look so sick and weak doesnt sound fun. plus if eating the flesh of lesser creatures is considered bad-form then thats what i have, dont get me wrong i feel bad for all the little animals but they taste way to friggin good for me to stop.
not to mention the fact that half the freaking people that live this lifstyle only do it because its a freaking trend. thats why i dont respect it.
If you're a peanut butter and jelly vegan then of course you're going to be unhealthy. It's pretty easy if you get off your ass and actually start making some interesting foods with different food groups. There are lots of different plant sources for vitamins, proteins, fats and whatever else you need.
I live in an apartment with my girlfriend, work a part time job and tour with my band. I'm more broke than most other people I know and can still afford to eat healthy food (that tastes awesome) - just in case anybody wanted to know if it was really that expensive to eat vegan. Once you start preparing your own recipes, you start seeing through all the bullshit when it comes to expensive and over-packaged meat substitutes. I mean the substitutes are convenient for occasional quick meals, but I don't rely on them and wouldn't really recommend eating that much soy in the first place.

You may always have been lactose intolerant? I was reading in one of my biology texts for a course I took last year (it didn't support vegetarianism in any way) that roughly 65-75% of the human population are lactose intolerant to some degree. Most don't ever realize it because they're so used to feeling sick from milk and lactose.
Tons of people say they have a lot more energy after going vegan or vegetarian. For me, I wouldn't say that's necessarily true; I feel about the same as far as having energy goes. A big difference that I did notice was that since going vegan (about a year and a half ago) I've only had about one, maybe two instances of upset stomach period. Prior to that stomach aches were really common for me.

Yeah, that still makes sense. You can build up a tolerance for lactose by eating more of it. Still, lot of people don't create enough (or any) of the enzyme lactase and are just used to the feeling of being lactose intolerant.

If you really like milk and want to drink it again, the person above me is right, you can probably rebuild a tolerance. It's also possible for lactose intolerance to develop in your late teens, it runs in my family that way. I know veganism tends to decrease the amount of lactase you produce but if it was brief it shouldn't have stopped production completely.\
also, this is a really old thread.

How is it bullshit? Environmentally, the cows/chickens still exist and still produce waste that needs to get dumped somewhere (do you want it in your groundwater?), and it's even worse if no one eats it (I know omnivores do, but lets pretend the vegetarians are in a closed system- where are the cows supposed to go after they stop producing milk? Are they just supposed to hang out for 20 years?). You are investing a HUGE amount of energy in feeding and hydrating the cows and getting impossibly little energy (in the form of milk/cream) in return. The ratio is something like 54 units of energy in to get just one unit of energy out. That's really sensible, especially when there are food shortages elsewhere on the planet and the southwest is suffering from droughts. (/sarcasm)
From an animal welfare perspective, yes, there are responsible ways to get milk from a cow and eggs from a chicken, and if someone treats the animals well then all power to them. But there are lots of irresponsible ways to get them (stuffing the chickens into small cages, one on top of the other, hooking the cows up to milking machines for hours) that is necessary if you want to feed a population of 300 million.

Well, thats certainly an informative answer. I guess what I was thinking in my head is more along the lines of animal rights/cruelty situation not so much the energy type issues you brought to the discussion. I was more along the lines of why people would be boycotting the harmless obtaining of animal products such as eggs milk and all that. I mean yeah, people/farmers mistreat the animals and I can see how that goes, but i have always thought animals were an important part of living and provide valuable nutrients and products besides the fact of eating them. So many animal products we use in every day nutrition its a hard lifestyle to maintain and get all your nutrients. but I guess in the end its not really bullshit but more of a lifestyle that is certainly not for me. it may be for you and lots of others which is fine, but i guess i just never really fully understood why people felt so passionate about these issues that they want to alter their nutrition to such an extent far beyond vegatatianism

Carnivore.
It's already dead, why not eat it?
Because if all the vegetarians in the world had that attitude and started eating meat then there'd be an even bigger demand for meat, and therefore more animals will get killed.
Anyway, I think it's harder for some people than others. I started being a vegetarian when I was five because my mum did it, so it was easy to adapt. However when I tried to turn vegan it lasted two weeks. There's loads of reasons why people do it. Personally it freaks me out chewing on other animals and also, when you kill them... it hurts. Same reason why I don't wear leather or fur. Plus the grains used to feed the animals could be sent to third world countries to decrease the percentage of world hunger. That's another big factor to why I stayed vegetarian, even though my friends tried to peer pressure me into eating meat.
anamericangod
03/10/09, 12:00 PM
The energy consumption is far more important than animal rights, in my opinion. It takes 2500 to 6000 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef. That is enormous.
I am assuming the water these animals drink is fairly clean, so it is even more remarkable to realize that cattle are drinking more clean water than millions of people around the world.

No, because there'd be little reason to breed animals, because all we'd need them for is eggs and milk, so the vigorous breeding would stop, and therefore there'd be less animals to feed.

Been a vegetarian for a while, it's not really a big deal to me. I don't associate with PETA or anything. With veggie burgers becoming more common, and a wide variety of salads and pasta at most places, it took a few of my friends months to notice- so I would disagree with the statement 'going out to eat with a vegetarian is a pain.'
p.s. my preference is vegan food, if I can find it. When I'm in a city with a few vegan options, I'll definitely take that anyday.

i want to know what asian food pyramid you're talking about. the japanese eat meat MULTIPLE times a day, every day...while it isn't as big a part of their diet as it is for an american they still do eat plenty of meat
A lot of Hindus are Asian, and they're traditionally vegetarians.
true, but all asian people aren't hindu. when you mentioned an "asian food pyramid" i thought you actually had some source.

It's not just VA Beach. Vegan food is generally harder to find in general.
I remember seeing some food lions around in Virginia but I don't remember if there is one in VA Beach specifically. Might want to check that out?
I know my local Food Lion has a freezer section for vegan/vegetarian food. It's a little bit pricey, but it's the price you pay for vegan food.

lol vegan food isn't more expensive if you know/learn how to cook; stay away from stuff like amy's frozen dinners.

I believe you. Pretty much anything is going to be cheaper if you make it yourself.
I was just saying that at the store it is more expensive since it sounded like he was looking for places to buy it at.

I've been a vegeterian for over 2 years and half a year Vegan, which was really difficult for me because I have a massive sweet tooth.
I think being a vegetarian isn't a drag. I don't make a big deal out of it. If I'm invited for dinner at a friends house and they cook some meat dish, I just don't eat the meat and just eat other stuff. I don't start lecturing them on how bad it is to eat meat or anything. To each their own.

I always feel bad when I go to people's houses and they've made this meat which looks like such effort and I'm like ''no thanks.'' or when they have to make me a different meal and stuff. I don't lecture people, but people ask a lot why I do it and try to prove my ideas wrong, so it always ends up as more of a debate than a lecture, which I usually win.
I wish I could keep up being a vegan though. I've tried, but it's just so hard.

Yeah, I mean while going out to restaurants. Like in NYC some friends took me to a place Teany, and if I could go out and eat vegan that'd be awesome. I try and eat vegan when possible (soymilk, avoiding gelatin, etc.) but I don't think I'd ever label myself as such.

I was always under the impression that avoiding gelatin is part of being vegetarian and not vegan?
maybe I'm wrong? no biggie anyways. I'm pretty much the same although I avoid gelatin 100%

i'm a vegetarian as of february 11, 2008.
not a long time, but whatever.
it's for the animals, my health, and the environment.
if it's done right it's very healthy.

haha, i don't eat gelatin. i think the way it's made is disgusting, and the outcome isn't healthy either so i don't see the point.

Gelatine is made from animal skin and bones, so if you're a vegetarian then you wouldn't eat it, because it is animal parts. It's really hard to look out for, but you kind of get used to knowing which products you should check for it in.

Ha, come to America, there are so many vegan sweets. Unless you mean baked goods, but even then there are sooo many vegan recipes for cupcakes and cakes and cookies. Let me know if you want any to try (even though I realized all the measurements would be off since America has to be different and not use the metric system)
I hate going over to other people's houses and telling them I can't eat anything. I always feel bad, especially when they try to make it vegan but are completely clueless.
Yeah there's no omnivore option, wtf

I don't play with my body solely based on ideals. Therefore I am a Pescetarianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pescetarianism).
My diet mainly consists of a shitload of bananas, cereal every other day, and salad laced with salmon or some other sort of fish.
I love me my Omega-3s and sushi. And we also have a longer average life-span than both vegans and meat-eaters.
Suck it.

I'd rather give up a few years than smell like fish :-p
Just kidding around (though seriously, the smell of fish has always made me want to vomit, I couldn't imagine eating it). Fish is pretty healthy, if only they weren't so scary/smelly.

Veggies and meat has salmonella every once in a while, beef has mad cow disease, meat in general has obesity + a higher risk of cancer and cholesterol, and fish has mercury poison + stankyness. We all got it bad.

I like my meat stuffed with meat, then rolled in meat, then cooked in meat.
I'd rather eat a steak than take iron suppliments and that kind of stuff everyday... how can taking processed synthetic vitamins be better for you than getting it the natural way anyway.

I don't eat synthetic vitamens. Just a lot of nuts and beans. I get everything else fine.
My mom cooks great vegetarian food though, so I'm lucky.
I eat meat in a strictly heterosexual way.
But of course saying it with the "in a strictly heterosexual way" is gonna force people to call me gay. Go ahead, ruin DJ's thread!
Hey, are you gay?

It's definitely easier when the person who cooks thinks that cooking meat is nasty.
It was annoying back when I ate meat though.

I don't eat red meat. That's strictly just a health choice.
Question, though- what sort of things should I be incorporating into my diet since I've cut out red meat? Is there any need to take extra vitamins or anything? Because this was a decision that I've made and stuck with for a good while now- six or eight months so far- and I've been getting headaches that I didn't have before. Could there be a connection??
