I for one love John Feldmann's style of production. What do you guys think?

He's the guy from Goldfinger, right?

I think he's pretty legit at making every band sound exactly the same /shrug.

I can't stand his production. Everything he produces sounds the exact same (i.e. Escape the Fate, CIWWAF, The Used).

Yes sir!

I think he's pretty legit at making every band sound exactly the same /shrug.

True, but I don't think those bands mind.

I cant stand the way he makes drums sound on every record.

Examples?

I don't.

Haha, I think it's an acquired taste for excess.

I can't stand his production. Everything he produces sounds the exact same (i.e. Escape the Fate, CIWWAF, The Used).

I love it, but I'm thinking it's a love it or hate it thing with Feldmann production.

Examples?

The Used self titled. The snare drum sounds like a garbage can.

Yeah I definitely like some early Goldfinger, but not a fan of his production I guess.

I think he's phenomenal, and I think my favorite earlier Goldfinger song is "Happy." The punch of the guitars makes me smile every time I listen to the song.

I find his production to be obnoxious -- the way drums sound on his albums are atrocious.

hey guys. so um, ive always kind of been had a hard time appriciating good production. i always hear people talking about their favorite producers and stuff and i just kind of don't understand it. maybe you guys can help me out. what signatures or characteristics make a producer's style distinct or unique ?

I agree with this, although I think it suits their sound on that album.

I haven't heard many of the albums he's produced, so don't really have enough of an opinion of him.

That album is really good. It gets glossed over because they had a few hit singles (omg they were on emtv!!!111) but it contains some incredible songs ("And The Hero Will Drown").

His production fits Goldfinger very well. Also, Mest, seeing as it's a Goldfinger Jr.. As for other bands, the only one I've heard that used his style properly and took advantage of his repitition was the Used's second album. Everything else he works on does sound similar, but if you like one, you like them all. He's got some good ideas, but eventually the bands that use him aren't bands that are all that creative in the first place.

Most producers are going to re-use elements of their 'sound' if it works well for them... Brian McTernan makes a lot of his drums sound almost exactly the same.

Well, with Feldmann he tends to overdo a lot things. I love this, but a lot of people don't.

I would like to thank him for producing the first album I truly loved:

This was the first of his production I had ever heard, and I love it too.

Listen to all of The Used's records and you'll be able to make one.

Agreed.

The songs on Decomposer that he produced was great as well.

The Matches said that they wanted him to do the whole record originally, but for some contractual reason they couldn't, but I agree with you.

i wont make another thread about feldmann .. i just wanted to tell u .. he is my idol since 1996! (yeh it sounds so childish but its true) Goldfinger got me into ska-punk .. Superman is the greatest ska-punk song EVER! John got me into music production ..thanks to him i have my all time fav. hobby home recordings! ... plus ..i fuckin love his crystal clear sound! I play every fuckin instrument like him .. yeh! so obsessed to be like him :P and now the good news .. i found a record label here in my country (Greece) and i will release my first cd single .. thanks to John Feldmann .. ;P i wish i could fly to america just to shake his hand and say to him thanks for everything you did,do,will do in music industry and for being the inspiration for so many ppl! He is a genious! He can turn shit into gold (CIWWAF compare their first album with Rotation)

oh! i noticed that is "cool to hate" feldmann production here in AP ...! everyone says the same shit about the drum sound... go watch how he record drums ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Q-Nu7zueho ... i dont think he would waste so many hours with a real drummer just to use READYMADE SAMPLES in the end! Yeh he over compressed the sound but so what? Its more radio-friendly, more poppy, more accesible to everyone .. is this so bad? and yeah .. he has his own signature sound .. you hear a song and you can tell "that is feldmann production!" dont know if many producers can do that!

Story of the Year wanted to experiment with another producer and their second cd was completely FAILURE! now they got feldmann back .. you know why.. no need to say anything!

The Matches .. They worked with so many producers in Decomposer .. first single John Feldmanns Papercut Skin .. why to choose Feldmanns song as a first single and not Tim Armstrongs Lazier than a Furniture?

Atreyu chose feldmann .. now they have a platinum record! Escape the Fate got jealous .. and u know the story never ends ..! he is even responsible for the huge succes of Good Charlotte .. he co wrote their song Anthem which got them famous .. i think they should go back and co wrote with him 2-3 songs to make a good pop-punk come back cz their latest albums sucks.

If u have a band i m sure 100% u already said ur demo and got no answer .. and u come here to talk shit about him!

I don't think the singer of soty has any ground to take a swipe at anybody, especially John Feldman. Sure, Goldfinger has released some crap (Disconnection Notice...ugh) and has written his fair share of corny lyrics...but he has always done so in a tongue in cheek way. Anyone that sings "Until the day I die, I'll spill my heart for you" with complete sincerity needs to reconsider his career choice.

Really? What did he say?

the mags poll question of the month was: Does Fame Have An Age Limit?

Pyan Phillips of story of the year answered, "I actually don't think male or female musicians are judged any differently when it comes to age. If its pure and real, there is no age limit. But if a 38-year old is singing overproduced, plastic, teeny-bop songsabout high school, its a bit sad; it's obvious it's about the paycheck and has nothing to do with art.

The highlighted part seems to be a swipe at John given goldfingers current sound and John's age (41). The quote is also funny in that SOTY changed their sound to get semi-popular, but I bet the irony of that would be lost on Mr Phillips.

What do you think, Harmless quote, or back handed slap?

no they dont .. but i thought i ve read it somewhere .. "Lead Sails and a Paper Anchor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lead_Sails_and_a_Paper_Anchor) was released on August 28 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_28), 2007 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007), and debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 43,000 copies." Wikipedia ... Atreyu at No.8 on Billboard .. thats a succes on its own .. thanks to Feldmann production!

Feldmann's production; while obnoxious and over done, it is highly entertaining. I listen to all of his songs with great intent, just to hear what he's done with them.

Listen to the song Earthquake on Lies for the Liars. Also, Smother me is a beautiful pop song.

The songs on that CD are so horribly constructed. Also, it seems as if Feldmann decided to take a break while producing this one. Everything is just so uninteresting.

I think his production worked pretty well with The Used especially on Lies for the Liars, but aside from that god damn everything he does is so freaking soulless and electronic sounding (in a bad way)
i've never really noticed his snare drum sound that you all seem to complain about so much, but for guitars (especially palm muted ones) it seriously sounds like he just takes a single palm mute and copy pastes it 400 times in a row instead of actually recording a set of them
it's offputtingly clean

I just don't understand how the man went from producing the self-titled album for the Used, to producing countless radio ready albums i.e., Lies for the Liars, Parts of Maybe Memories, the latest Escape The Fate record, and the As Cities Burn album aforementioned,

I will say this, there is a local band who go by: Josephine. They were originally a 7 piece band when signed to Warner. They were a Feldmann produced act. They went from a hardcore screamo scene sound to a "progressive"/POP sound - emphasis on the pop -. People were disjointed in Kansas (where I'm from) as what to make of all of this. I for one really didn't give a shit, as did most of my friends. I liked their album, while it does have that signature Feldmann sound, and at times, it sound blatantly artificial, It's still a great pop/rock album. One that unfortunatly went unnoticed by the public, yes this includes even the underground scene, the album and Josephines' sound is far too poppy for any indie kid.

To make a long story short, the once seven piece Pop band is now a hungry and unsigned quartet currently working on their next album in KC.

Give em a listen, tell your friends: http://www.myspace.com/josephinecollective

no i am not in this band.
