The iTunes Music Store caught P2P LimeWire to tie for the #2 online music service in March, an NPD Group survey reveals. iTunes and LimeWire drew 1.7 million households, trailing only P2P outfit WinMix, which won the month with 2.1 million. That means iTunes beat both Kazaa and iMesh for the month; what’s more, Napster and Rhapsody made the top 10 as well. Said NPD’s Russ Crupnick, "One of the music industry's questions has been: when will paid download stores compete head-to-head with free P2P download services? That question has now been answered. iTunes is more popular than nearly any P2P service, and two other paid digital music offerings have also gained a level of critical mass." Nonetheless, only 4% of total plugged-in households paid for downloads in March, according to the same survey, so there’s still a ways to go before the aforementioned “critical mass” really starts to have bottom-line meaning.

Personally I prefer have a hard copy of the music rather than buying a digital version, 4% is actully quite a high number when you consider that alot of people probably share my way of thinking. They say that eventually they are going to do this sort of thing with videogames and movies as well but I doubt I'll ever go for it.

Don't take this story at face value - huge questions about its methadology exist. Of course, the mainstream media will just dish out like they always do whenever the major labels serve them with something to feist on...

most of those 2.1 million are becuase of the iPod, not because they chose iTunes. and wihle 4% of that number is still high, that means that iTunes as a service still isn't meeting the desires of the users

i really don't understand why anyone would BUY digital music. if i download something that i like, i go buy it, it's so much better to have your hands on a physical cd, i like getting the artwork and the complete package. i guess it's maybe 2 or 3 dollars cheapers, but IMO it's worth the extra cash. i usually delete the 'bad' music i download within a few days, no need to have it waste space on my hard drive. but hey, that's just me.

iTunes is the coolest as a media player and just for iPod integration
but FUCK if i'd ever buy a track off iTunes, i've read too much shit about the artist getting janked and all the money going to apple and the record company (moreso than cds)
plus the quality isn't as good
i love my iPod though, so thank you apple
i think the main reason so many people have iTunes is just for their iPod or use as a media player, they don't buy shit off of it
i have a friend who actually uses it, but it's cuz she's lazy and goes to notre dame and can't get to a record store or something, i mean damn, should just order the cd

I sometimes break down and buy cds off of Itunes, I bought Is a Real Boy off there, assuming I was going to have trouble tracking down the cd locally. I am pretty sure I am going to buy the cd for real the next time I see Say Anything.
Limewire is good too.

I don't see the point of paying for music if you're not going to get the album art and what not with it. To me buying music on things like iTunes and such is a waste of money. Yea, you're getting a song for $1 or whatever it is, but if you figure some albums cost $10 and you're getting 15 songs AND album art. iTunes is ripping you off.

plus digital music has no buy back value. So if you get sick of the cd you can't take it to a used record store and get a few extra dollars for it. pointless
