i would first suggest getting a book that teaches you how to read music.

yeah, learn how to read music first. and also make sure you learn scales in the different keys. they're a pain in the ass, but definitely help later. good luck! :)

Learn music theory while learning how to play. It's makes writting and improv. much easier.

i taught myself and there is no need to learn to read music notes or anything like that, all you need to learn is the keys and look at guitar tabs and youll be able to play.

all i gotta say is give yourself time and try not to get frustrated .. i took three years of piano lessons (7-10 yrs old) and completely forgot everything once i hit college (i used to be a music major.) i ended up taking a quarter of piano and i had to give myself time to remember things, but yeah, just give yourself time and keep your head up :)

And especially for writing. If you have background in music theory, you already know what patterns and progressions sound good. You don't have to search for as long, you already know what you want to hear.
