Basically it's when a band lets money and popularity influence their music. They stop making music they way the want to and usually become more mainstream to make money.

Gabe Saporta from Midtown/Cobra Bullshit sold out.

A band sells out when they change their sound to try to make it in the mainstream. A lot of ska bands, for example, dropped their horn sections and really just started writing pop songs.

I don't see that. He's less popular now that he's in Cobra. Way more people knew Midtown, so that really isn't selling out. He just left his band to join another (not as good) band.

I disagree quite a bit.
Cobra is incredibly popular right now, and I'd argue more passive fans of alternative rock know about Gabe now than back in the Midtown days

selling out is when a band goes against their stated beliefs for mainstream success. it isn't merely playing popular/mainstream music since tastes change and sometimes people really feel like playing more catchy pop rock after spending years playing something more underground. The phrase comes from activist circles; it was originally used to describe people who would rail against major corporations and then accept a job working for them.

for example, if a band were to claim they were super anti-capitalist, they would be selling out if they signed to a major label and took a giant advance.

so for a list of bands, it's bands that are like Against Me!.

It's when a band fills a venue to its capacity.

sell out can also mean a guy dropped out of high school/didn't attend college so he could go tour in a band, and that band never got popular and he has a family to support and isnt sek-c enough to be a gigolo and isnt hard enough to deal drugs

what are you talking about? i'm pretty sure most people in bands dropped out of college.

i'm seriously confused, probably because i've been reading the bible all day.

It doesn't matter if he's popular now, although he is much bigger now than he was in Midtown when it comes to mainstream. The fact of the matter is he sold out to Snakes on a Plane and disregards anybody's want for Midtown to at least do a reunion show.

i was lurking until i saw this comment but just had to say, this isn't true at all. i dont knwo what gives you that idea but he definitely does wanna do atleast a reunion show (maybe more) he just doesn't want to take time out of Cobra when things are going well for them right now. he was actually really excited when they were almost gonna play bamboozle last year...

He doesn't have to do a reunion show just because other people want him to.

Oh okay, well never mind then. The last news I heard was a while back, when he was talking about his overbearing fans constantly bothering him to get Midtown back together. I'm not sure when that was.

No, he didn't. Midtown wasn't an anticorporate band, so it's impossible for them to sell out.

im saying they might make something more marketable, even if it doesnt coincide with the guidelines they set for their more artistic/intrinsic music because they never made enough money doing it their own way, and they need the money to support their families or at least put them through college and into a safe "real job". i'd say thats a pretty understandable reason for selling out, i wouldnt blame anyone for that. i mean they accomplished as many of their musical goals as they could and when money got tight and the need for money was dire, they abandoned the chase of their dreams and used the only money-making opportunity that was readily available to them.
