Which one do you like better? I like Macs waaaay better. I have a 1.42 GHz Mac Mini with 512 MB of RAM. It is so fast that Photoshop opens in less than a second. I also have a 1.5 GHz PC with 2 GB of RAM and I can only download spyware with it. Seriously.

I prefer Macs, as there is no problem with viruses. The majority of people here use PC's, so I doubt Macs are going to win this one.

You should visit http://www.wincustomize.com/ (wincustomize.com) for ways to make your PC look just like a Mac for $50 and not slowing it down. And, Mac Minis are really cheap with a student discount. I reccomend upgrading the RAM to 512 MB, though.

$524 for a 1.25 GHz Mac Mini with 512 MB of RAM. It has free shipping. It doesn't include a monitor, but you can use one you already own as long as it is VGA or DVI. It doesn't matter how old it is. I'm using a 17" monitor from 1993 and it works perfectly. You won't get a lot of more speed by buying a 1.42 GHz, but you HAVE TO upgrade the RAM. Also, you can overclock it to up to 1.58 GHz.

I prefer my PC, purely because I'm used to it. We use Macs at the studio at school, and I find it very quirky and awkward to use. I'm sure if I got used to it though, I could think it's better. I hear they are great for media

Go into your nearest Apple Retail store. You'll immediately change your mind once you try out one of the computers. Trust me. OS X Tiger is amazing. I think every version below Panther is a little weird. Also, Apple has amazing support. They'll replace your computer for free if they can't fix it and it is still under the warranty, but you can always extend it for just $100 with a student discount.

BTW, in that comic, the computer is a PowerMac G4.... those are like 5 years old and run OS 9, unless if you upgrade.

dude i agree.. i had to use like OS 9 in my summer school what a piece of junk it was so cunfusing, but then my friend got an ibook and it had a dock and the buttons were similar (he had panther).. it was really good and a lot easier to use then those emacs at summer school ..

but yeah we used to use macs at my house like version 2 .. i dont know oneof the earliest ones.. it was a apple quadra. with like 3 mb of ram.. then we met windows 95. and now my family wants to switch to mac becaue its compatable with windows now and its a better and safer OS

Except that Longhorn has been in production far longer than Tiger has been out. PCs > Macs simply because of compatibility and the fact that you can do so much more on a PC. Macs are easy, and you don't get viruses, sure...but if you're smart, you'll have virus protection on your PC anyways and it won't be a problem. The Mac OS is pretty, but everything takes longer to do.

I'll take capability over an aesthetic look any day of the week. Trend setters seem to be the ones keeping apple in business.

you know, why don't you get out of your moms house and into the real world. Go use a mac for five minutes and find out what a real computer is like. If you're too lazy to do so, just think about the top 10% of all video makers, even students in film school. Take a poll there...do you think one person is going to use an obsolete IBM computer. Apple has taken over the media world when it comes to art. So I guess if this pole is for the people who want to go out, spend a small amount of money on a cheapo consumer computer so they can talk on AIM, then go buy a PC. Want a computer that you can use to actually do something with your life? Go buy a mac.

So basically, you just told me in a quite obnoxious rant what I already knew; that Macs are better for media?

In the end man, it's just a computer. My PC is fine, it does everything I want it to. Sadly, I do not have enough money for a decent media kit like Pro Tools so I can record music well, and sadly I do not have enough money for your precious Mac. If I did, you'd be damn sure I'd get one. The Mac and the PC have both good and bad qualities, so don't judge a Mac as if it has no bad qualities

I use a Mac. All the time. At work. It's a piece of fucking shit. I can't do anything on it. The minute you know how to use a REAL computer, you're insanely limited by Macs. Way to bring up Macs for video making - that's ONE aspect that Macs do better. It's the ONLY one Mac users ever bring up, because there's nothing else. what do you think programmers use? PCs. What is the most code written for and on? PC. I have used both systems a lot, and PCs are far superior - don't act like all PC users are ignorant about stuff. If anything, it's Mac users that are ignorant, simply because Macs are easy to use, they're cute, and they get the job done. If that's all you want, FINE. That doesn't make it a better/more powerful computer.

Nobody has mentioned this either, but if you're a computer gamer, you can pretty much kiss Macs goodbye because of the compatibility issue..

Also - who SELLS computers with mouses with ONE click button? are you kidding me? That is proof that the main demographic that Apple sells to are people who want simplicity over performance.

Dignity and consistency? This is the same company that has re-released the Apple iPod in so many ways it's fucking ridiculous, and you are telling me Apple don't want to lose dignity by licensing software?

For fucks sake, you realize that this company is a company because they want to make money? So making software for the Mac would in turn get them money, right?

As a matter of fact, there is a lot of programming done on macs. Definitely not more than on a PC, but what you stated is a common misconception.

In my scripting for visual fx/programming class (masters program at NYU) we used macs and didn't encounter one problem the entire semester. That was until we moved to the PC lab where NYU had installed Pixar's Renderman. The entire class had nothing but problems, and almost all of my classmates were strict pc users. The professor who taught the class was one of the lead programmers for Blue Sky Studios, working on "Robots". He does all of this work on a mac, and he said that nobody at Blue Sky uses windows.

You don't like macs, and that's fine, I'm not knocking you for that. I had a job that put me on a pc 40-70 hours a week, and I hated it. It's all personal preference. It is true that if you're a hardcore gamer you have little choice but to run it on a pc, due to available titles for the mac platform. It is, however not a performance issue at all.

The bottom line is, this debate could go on forever. It all comes down to what you feel most comfortable using.

See, that i can respect 100%. I have the same thing set up with my mac. It's perfect for what i need (3D, Special FX, Video, Graphics, etc), and it is set up amazingly well. I will never knock someone for liking their PC more, but I feel like too many people don't give macs a chance because of shit they hear from pc people, that's all.

i chose i don't use computers....cuz it's funny...i'm getting an ibook as soon as i start paying off the payments...so late this month...the memory and sheer fact that it runs super flawless, is reason enough to pick mac...just cuz ur impartial to pc's doesn't mean that they work better.

Macs all the way. I've never been happier with a computer and I'm a programmer. I use the thing everyday. It just works and it works the way I think it should work. You can't beat that. On top of it all it looks cool. :)

Macs simply can not compete with my 3.2ghz P4, and 4gigs of RAM. Also, I have never had a virus/spyware in the last 9 years. People who complain about PC's simply do not know how to use them correctly.

Macs are subpar machines with a strong cult following. The whole "Macs are for graphics" statement is pile of bullshit. They are not specifically designed for graphics, they are designed to look cute for all of the fashion/trend whores.

Microsoft Windows has so many security holes you have to be mighty lucky not to get any viruses or other problems. Mac OSX is so streamlined and powerful compared to Windows its a joke to even put one up against the other. That's not just my opinion since I use a Mac, since I've used and currently use both platforms, that's quickly becoming an industry wide opinion. My Mac doesn't break, doesn't stop working, doesn't display the good ol' blue screen of death, doesn't do anything Windows does all too often. It simply works and is easy to use.

Not to mention when I want to edit a movie I can, when I want to upload pictures from my digital camera I can just plug it in and download those pictures. I don't have to fool with drivers or anything of the sort. Now, I know how to do that so for me it wouldn't be a problem but that said I shouldn't have to.

Funny enough too Microsoft Office for Mac OSX is better than the PC version.

MAC OS10 is no more secure than Microsoft WindowsXP SP2. Both of the operating systems have an equal amount of bugs http://www.securityfocus.com (check the vulnerabilities section). Many of the issues concerning security have been dealt with, with the release of SP2.

I also think that all of the crap that manufacturers pre-install on new PCs causes a lot of problems. People who build there own systems (me included) never seem to have any of the issues/problems that you bring up.

MAC OSX is not nearly as perfect as everyone makes it out to be. However, with the advent of http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1824704,00.asp , I must admit that they will dominate Windows based machines.

i kno this is little off topic, but 3 of the top pc companies wanted to license apple OS tiger (read it a while ago.. if i find the link i will post it) but of course, apple said no. this is what i dont understand about apple, why did they reject that offer, it would probally have let the mac os rule more of the market

The majority of people don't babysit their systems to make sure IIS isn't running rampant or IE is all updated or even if they're on the newest service packs, which for NT there was like 108. (ok really there was 6) They turn it on, surf porn, download random attachments and do generally dumb things. Now, maybe Mac users on the whole don't do that and it helps with the reputation. For ease of use, Macs are far better day-in, day-out than any PC.

Point is, for an everyday Joe Schmoe user, Mac OSX is perfect as compared to Windows. For an everyday computer things just work. Now there's bugs and flaws and problems, sure. Granted the market is less and that could contribute to Mac lack of press for flaws, that said I've used both, I continue to use both and the amount of random crap I have to deal with on Windows is plainly unacceptable.

I love how all the Apple users tout their operating system and say how unoriginal Microsoft is, when OSX would not exist if not for the fact it's a pretty graphical interface of unix.
