okay, cmon who knows some little tricks or can give tips about compression, EQ or just general mic placement when tracking....
I know my little trick is setting up a room condensor mic no less than a meter away from the kick drum at about shin height ;) works well you guys should try it
I did a whole project on microphones for Music Tech, a lot of it was about what microphones are good for certian tasks and how they should be placed. I'll dig it out later
If you are recording acoustic, don't point the microphone at the hollow hole. It will pick up too much reverb and there will be too much noise in the recording. Try pointing the microphone at the bit where the neck and body join, that will pick up a decent sound

If you're recording distorted, don't make the mistake of using too much gain. If you use to much gain, it just sounds like mud and it's hard to hear tonal distinction. Turn down the gain to no more than 5. If you're recording directly into your computer, you might want to turn it down even more as the quality may get fuzzier. Turning down the gain compromises sustain, but it's well worth it. Also I think itl's good to scoop the mids out of your rhythm playing, but turn up the mids when playing lead. Just a preference,l I think the mids add depth to single notes.

yeah i agree, i always have to suck the mids out of my kick drum... and out of my vocals a bit..i think rolling off the bass in your toms is a good decision too as with electric guitars and basses...
