View Full Version : Solid Pop Rock Rec?

I've been listening to nothing but folk/indie stuff lately (I&W, Arcade Fire, Okkervil River, Jenny Lewis, Bob Dylan, etc, etc, etc), and I guess the snowboarder in me is craving some good catchy pop rock as a temporary change of pace of sorts. If possible, I'm not looking for anything I would be embarrassed to enjoy. You know, no teenage scene stuff, All Time Low, Mayday Parade, new Fallout Boy, Four Year Strong, etc.
Is there any good, catchy upbeat pop rock that an adult male can enjoy and not be ashamed of?
I've heard some decent things about the following albums:
Acceptance - Phantoms
Midtown - Living Well is the Best Revenge
Valencia - We All Need a Reason to Believe
The Graduate - Anhedonia
Are any of these decent? Any rec's would be appreciated. I'm at work, so scanning the myspace's isn't an option right now.
Autopilot Off - Make A Sound

Thanks for those.
listen to third eye blind for some killer pop rock. oh and if you're snowboarding listen to "wanna know" by obie trice. it reminds me of the sundance episode of entourage when the boys are at the top of the mountain about to board down. that should get you jacked.

I'm 23 years old and not ashamed to say I love OK Go. Those guys know how to write some catchy as fuck powerpop. Also, I highly recommend you check out Ozma.

Maybe not quite what you're looking for... but it's high time you take a class in Power Pop 101. Try some of these on for size:
Big Star - #1 Record/Rock City
Cheap Trick - At Budokan
The Posies - Dear 23
Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque
Jellyfish - Spilt Milk
Velvet Crush - Teenage Symphonies To God
Sloan - One Chord To Another
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Material Issue - International Pop Overthrow
Fountains Of Wayne - Utopia Parkway
The Raspberries - Greatest
Marshall Crenshaw - self titled
That should be a pretty good start.

That's a very solid album. I didn't think anyone else had heard of them. Coolness.

this
got the energy of pop-punk but the most striking difference is it doesnt adhere to the image, aesthetics, or lyrical antics of any of those teenage bands. the singer sings in his own voice and his lyrics kinda suck but he isn't trying to be more witty than everybody else, and in an era when pete wentz one liners have become the overblown trend, that's somewhat redeeming. also the music is very atmospheric.
other recs:
jimmy eat world - futures. simply the best mainstream pop-rock record of this decade.
anything by the beatles

Yeah very sad. They had a lot of potential and that tragedy was just unfortunate.

i know its so great, it's like they're perfectly fit for top 40 radio but they would be like the ONLY good artist to be played on there.
i think that album is produced so well too, so much atmosphere and reverb involved, it is the only fully polished album for which i can say i really love the production and character, i usually go for records that are well mixed but only somewhat polished.
