View Full Version : Rumored T&N Signing

Rumor is The Classic Crime (http://www.theclassiccrime.com) has signed to Tooth and Nail Records.

Why is this a rumor? You have a T&N employee on staff, you should have this as a verifiable fact. In fact, why doesn't Scott fill us in on tracklistings, signings and other news before any one else knows about them? You have an edge, you should use it.

I've been recommending this band for months... I'm happy they're finally getting recognition. Also, in response to Maledixtion, a lot of our "rumor" posts are just posted as rumors bc we'd get in trouble with the label if we actually posted it as fact. Not to say that's the case in this instance... but in general, yeah.

Thanks, that's what I assumed, but I think Scott should post these, so even though he says "rumored", we all understand that he has the inside scoop. Kind of a winkwinknudgenudge sort of thing.

signing to labels like tooth and nail, drivethru/rushmore, victory mean almost nothing anymore. All the labels just sign w/e is half decent(i actually never heard this band but referring to how many bands labels sign now and quality in general) budget accordingly so that they won't lose money and if one out of 30 bands get big they consider it a success and all the other bands get no promo or are just dropped. fuck indie labels are almost becoming like major.

Sometimes with Tooth and Nail it seems like they have around 3 cd's come out around the same time and whichever band starts selling the most theyll throw all their money into them. I know some bands like The Fighting Jacks and Watashi Wa hardly ever got promotion by the label, and now theyre gone, well Seth is still there but you get the idea.

Purple drink, or just Purple, is southern slang for mixing robotussin in with sprite and jolly ranchers, there are alot of variations but basically it's like that. You hear that alot in southern rap songs, although the people I know who are actually crazy enough to do it just drink the robuotussin straight.

Holland, Slow Coming Day, Watashi Wa, Mae, and Anberlin were all signed at the same time. Only Mae was promoted. Anberlin's second release was finally promoted, but their debut wasn't pushed very hard.

I wouldn't say that, especially not when DP was first signed.
I think they do a fairly good job of promoting most of their bands, but yea, some of them don't get too much press. Evidence = As Cities Burn & Far-Less. ASB is getting lots of promo now because the CD comes out in a week, but Far-Less had a release right after they got signed that had almost no attention. Both bands were signed on the same day.

Speaking of T&N.. I heard some of The Fold's new album this weekend at their studio in Long Island.. fuckin incredible. The Buzz on them should begin now. Their record drops in the fall. So good. And, I agree with most of this thread, T&N is a very high quality label. They do good business and good work.

mike jones is one of the few Hip Hop artists who started completly independant, releasing albums on swizz beats... then he got picked up by a major... but why would we expect anyone on this site to know about more then one style of music.... it would be too hard to ask i guess
PS... the classic crime probably did not want people to know about the signing before it was final...
yes the classic crime has just got signed to tooth and nail! i was just with them tonight!and yes you can be expecting alot of great things from them ive heard whats going to be on there full cd that will be recorded soon! and i have to say there will not be a bad song on the whole cd!

slow comming day got barely any promotion now, or even when their cd came out. they are excellent and T and N should not eltr them get away by lack of promotion, but overall T and N does a decent job and trying to promote all their bands. the classic crime is awesome, i got into these guys the first time frank brought them up on this site. also its no rumor anymore they have it on their purevoume site that they signed

Things have changed A LOT since the MxPx thing when T&N was still very small. I know some bands are disappointed with the lack of T&N "push" that they felt they received (including some of my favorites like The Fighting Jacks), but I think T&N has reached a whole new level through their impressive marketing in magazines and through web boards like this one. The annual advertizing budget for all bands combined must be HUGE.
I wish they weren't so busy promoting their bands, in order to answer letters and e-mails I send them - but, oh well - they are a very impressive label anyway.

I'm very proud of how T&N has turned around the way they do business with bands. In the past couple years they've undergone a revolution in the way they treat their bands, I've talked with some bands about the label and they've said they couldn't be happier now. Project 86 was especially happy about the turnaround.

yes, i said the best indie label, not labels. thats that best thing imo about t&n/solid state. they have the biggest variety of bands i can think of. unlike DTR or the worst, victory records.

its been around since ive been in 5th grade, (about to be soph in college) and is HUGE here in houston. it may be out of the spotlight, but people will never stop wanting to listen to music when they are high. hahah.

Just to insert my two cents here - as many of you know, I am an intern at Tooth & Nail, and I go into the offices and interact with the people there on a regular basis. I have to say that the people who work there have more integrity than anybody else in the biz I've met. The A&R's live and die for the bands they represent, everybody gets super pumped about signings or new demos (people are in love with the new unmastered Emery album)...I can honestly say in a completely unbiased manner that Tooth & Nail is the dream label to work for. And to the people who say they don't promote their bands, I'm suprised because of how much T&N advertises - I mean look around, there's banners on this site for Solid State releases, there was a Mae contest, go on over to our friends at punkrocks.net and you'll see banners for Waking Ashland and Discover America, there are at least 2 or 3 full page ads in every Alternative Press magazine...John Frazier works in marketing and he's always trying to scheme up new sweet ways to promote the bands (waking ashland shopping carts, big foam #1 fingers for Number One Gun.)
Bottom Line is that Tooth & Nail is full of honest people who have a real passion for what they do. They do care about the bands they sign, they do care about promoting their artists, and they aren't just another face in the crowd - Them and Solid State have the best roster around right now, in my opinion - and I thought that before I was an intern.

Tooth and Nail is distro'ed by EMI. The responsibility of getting CD's to stores is EMI. not tooth and nail. If T&N wants to sell more they should resolve the problem, but dont blam T&N....
on a side note, EMI does have the smallest market share out of the 4 major distro companies.... so that means their releases probably have a lower priority.
Also, T&N is not an indie like FBR or Fearless. this should be noted when everone refers to them as Indie, they are as independant as DTR was under Geffen/Universal

It seems everyone's a little off topic. The Classic Crime is a good band and that's MY two cents. They're also really good live. And as far as everything else, everyone is signing bands like crazy. But who cares, music is big, and it's not like you have to like all the bands that have contracts or even listen to them for that matter. Give new bands a chance. Just because one recent addition to the same label sucked, doesn't mean the next one is going to as well.
