Slick Rick

I would say Eminem would have to be on the list solely for what he has done for the city. I can't tell you how many times I've been out of town and when I say I'm from Detroit I get met with "Yeaaaah 8 Mile!" I can't think of another rapper that is so closely associated by his or her self with restoring a city's presence in the music scene.
absolutecrunk

That isn't an artist though. That's much closer to an entire label. By the time D12, Obie Trice, and even Shady Records had become prominent, Eminem was already huge so it's all centered around him. I think the west coast rap didn't really have that one-man nucleus just because several of their guys were selling records.
this is really hard, but here is what comes up in my mind first.
1. MF Grimm
2. Talib Kweli
3. KRS-One
4. Black Thought
5. Rakim
