Originally formed as a Hardcore Punk band, Melvins' music is influenced by Black Flag's My War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Flag_%28band%29)era Punk Rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punk_rock), slow rock acts like Swans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swans_%28band%29), and, most notably Black Sabbath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sabbath)-style Metal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_music); however, their idiosyncratic approach, bizarre sense of humor, and experementation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experimental_music) make neat categorization difficult. Osborne has also stated that his guitar playing is more influenced by Black Flag than Black Sabbath. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melvins#cite_note-7)They often favor very slow tempos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempo), and their sludgy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sludge_metal) sound was a strong influence on grungge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grunge)music, especially Nirvana, Soundgarden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soundgarden), and many other bands from Seatlle. Their protegés, however, tended to use more conventional musical structures with this sound. Melvins have also influenced many bands, including Tool, who are personal friends with the band; Crowbar, Mastodon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowbar_%28US_band%29) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mastodon_%28band%29) and Eyehategod, who participated in a Melvin's tribute album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Reach:_The_Music_of_the_Melvins) , and Boris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boris_%28band%29), who took their name from the title of a Melvins song.

I've only heard of this band a few times. If I were to check them out, what would you consider their best song(s) and album?

I really like the albums they recorded with Jello, but I haven't delved into their other material as much as I'd like to.
