i have a fender jazzmaster, and i need some opinions.

the wire came disconnected from the bridge pickup, i look at the thing, it looks to me like it just has to be soddered on. i take it to the closest music store (not the best but the closest) and ask if they can fix it cause it seems like a little thing to me. guy there says the same thing "yeah ill have it done by monday" (thats last monday) and here we are a week later.

call the guy, he says "yeah the whole pickup got 'jacked up' when you broke the wire, i gotta order you a new one"

what. the. fuck.?

I would ask him to explain what exactly happened. Also find out what he is charging for the pickup (not the installation) and see what that price is compared to what it sells for online.

theres nothing wrong with the pickup, i know it for a fact. and he said its under warranty but its just total bullshit, this shouldnt be happening

i'd just ask to have your guitar and "broken" pickup back.

get another opinion from a better shop.

Sounds sketchy to me.... Are they fixing it free under the Fender warranty ?

Also, is the wire broken on the pickup end or the other end ? If it's on the pickup end then it might not be fixable without getting a new pickup or at least a new coil.

it is on the pickup end, and he said its under the fender warranty, but i could pay for the repair now even though it doesnt work, which is back assed to me

and i asked another guitar shop thats further away and i actually know the people and they said it sounded fishy to them

do you know what your talking about the wire coming undone on the pickup end? how does that work cause i was told its usually just a soddering thing

The coil for a Jazzmaster pickup is made of about seven or eight thousand feet of copper wire. This means that the wire has to be VERY thin, so it's pretty fragile... If the lead that broke is coming from the inside of that coil, then you would have to unwind about a mile and a half of wire, solder the lead back onto the end, and wind it back up again. There's no way that is actually worth doing...

I accidentally broke the lead from the inside of one of the coils in the bridge position pickup on my strat when I was doing some work on it, so I just replaced it with a different coil... That's why one coil has a black bobbin (pic in my avatar).

If I were you, I'd ask them exactly what's wrong with the pickup and try not to sound like you're accusing them of anything. If he's a halfway decent tech he should be able to let explain what's up with it. Also, what Jazzmaster model is it ? Most Jazzmaster reissues don't actually have Jazzmaster pickups... they have what I've heard described as a "strat pickup wearing a hat." If that's the case with yours, you might want to consider an upgrade to the real thing because man, real Jazzmaster pickups rule.

Good luck.

the guy's douche bag, and he couldnt explain what was wrong with it, but what your saying makes some sense. he said the new pickup will be under warranty so thats a little relaxing on the mind but its taken 3 weeks and its pissing me off

thanks for the help though man

Yo fuck small town music stores. One ripped me off hardcore in high school. I ordered a set of EMG's, an 81 and an 85, to throw in a flying V. I obviously, in that order, also included the requisite hardware to make them work. I spent the usual on the package that you would from any supplier. It took them a year and a half to get the order in, claiming that "EMG just won't ship them to us." When they handed me my shit, it was just the pickups - no hardware. Shit was worthless. It was so long ago that the employees had shifted many times, and there was no record of my purchase aside from my receipt, which, they claimed, didn't constitute sufficient evidence that I'd ordered more than these two pickups. I got fucked. I never went back, and I hollered at the manager.
