View Full Version : Frat Pack?

Boredom and random Wikisearch delivered me to a page where the topic was the "Frat Pack", a group of comedic actors that we all know and love. The group supposedly consists of Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Owen and Luke Wilson and Steve Carell. I guess they all appear in each others movies and what not. Who is your favorite?

I read the same article on Wikipedia awhile ago. I would pick Will Ferrel. You should also do a poll with all the Apatow actors

Why isn't adam sandler on the list? he's way better than the rest in my opinion.

Will Ferrell

as much as i love those "frat pack" guys, no one will ever top the greatness that once was John Belushi, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, John Candy, etc.

no one can match up to them in terms of writing and comedy

in fact i'd rank the list as follows:

1 - The old school SNL crew (Murray, Aykroyd, etc)

2 - The "frat pack" (Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, etc.)

3 - The Sandler crew (Adam Sandler, Norm Macdonald, etc.)

4 - The "Apatow Crew" (Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, etc)

Wow, so many Ferrell fans. I can enjoy his movies, but he seems to always do a loud/obnoxious act that doesn't play well for me. Oh, and I chose Stiller; fire away.

Fuck that. While I do love Ghostbusters and many Billy Murray movies those dudes will never be as good as the Apatow or Will Ferrel crew. Besides Ghostbusters and The Blues Brothers most of those dudes movie have 2-3 comedians in them max for the most part. With Apatow and Ferrel movies almost every actor/actress is a great comedian. Why those movies are so strong is the supporting cast. It is ridcoulous how almost EVERY character in Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Knocked Up is beyond hilarious. The same reason I don't like the SNL crew stuff is the same reason I don't really like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey stuff is that a single funny dude doesn't make a whole movie funny. I think the last 5-6 years have been the best years for comedy in the history of cinema. In my opinion Judd Apatow is a golden god. I also don't find any of those SNL dudes consistently funny except for Bill Murray. He is the only one of them that has stood the test oft time and is still relevant. Ramis is as well but mainly as a filmmaker

someone should make a poll of greatest SNL cast members. andy samberg, chris parnell and darrel hammond are the only funny ones since ferrell left though

I could never watch SNL because its way too hit or miss. That is why the "best of ____ DVD series exists. The Will Ferrel, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, and Tracy Morgan ones are hilarious.

well, if stupid toilet and stoner humor is your thing, then yeah, the Apatow crew takes the cake

but the way i see it, none of the most recent comedies to come out can match to those that i mentioned before. guy like Ramis, Murray, Ayrkoyd, Eddie Murphy, Belushi, etc did not depend on stupid stuff like that. they were creative guys who wrote or starred in some of the most original comedies in cinema history.

are you telling me that Knocked Up is funnier than say Animal House, Caddyshack, Stripes, etc??

Toiler humour is more Adam Sandler's style. While I love Caddyshack i I relate on a personal level to Knocked up so I like it more. I liked Stripes and absolutley hated Animal House. It was way too outdated and simply not funny. It was good for its time but I don't think it holds up very well. The thing I like a lot with the Apatow movies is they are funny but still have a lot of heart and relatable characters. And I personally relate to stoner stuff as well.

Also you didn't address my main point which was those older movies more often have a funny lead but not a funny supporting cast.

will ferrell is hilarious in the old SNL stuff, but i cannot stand his new schtick. stepbrothers was a terribly sophomoric comedy in my opinion that consists mainly of fart and penis jokes that are not that funny to begin with. steve carell is number one in my mind.

to each his own

don't get me wrong about the Apatow guys, i love some of their movies. Superbad and 40 Year Old Virgin are hysterical, but i don't like the fact how they have to use the words "cock, fuck, shit, etc" every other sentence to sound more funny, or have to include the use of drugs as well.

for the most part, i do kinda agree with you that often times the lead in these older movies are funnier. there are, however, a few exceptions: 1) Animal House (i know you didn't like it, but most of the guys in the frat are funny in their own way), 2) Stripes (the whole crew in the army are funny, same can be said about Caddyshack)

I personally love the use drugs and that they have no shame in it. I relate 100% to that. As for the cussing I do see your point. My favorite comedy is Anchorman and while its dirty most of the humor comes is just weird and silly stupid shit. I kind of wish there were more good PG comedies like Napoleon Dynamite or Nacho Libre that don't be have to be crude and have awesome swearing to be funny. While I do like the more adult type humour its not necessary to make a funny movie. I'm gonna have to go see Stripes again since its been a few years. It was pretty funny.

Three way tie between Black, Ferrel and Carell for me. I like them in different ways, so I can't really pick one over the other but I can pick all of them way above the rest of the choices.

QTF. Sometimes I think cussing is just hitting the easy button, like "F, just throw in an f word and all those f-ers are f-in' gonna f-in' laugh! F man! F-in' genius!"

I finally saw Nacho Libre. I resisted it for this long and thought i'd hate it but i thought it was great.

Will Ferrel is the worst, and I do not believe he has ever forced a laugh out of me except as the character Big Earl in Starsky and Hutch.

Owen Wilson is not versatile enough to get a legitimate vote.

Luke Wilson...just no.

Steve Carrell is funny but not that funny, and sometimes comes acrossed as boring, especially in 40 year old virgin.

Jack Black is predictable, and his jokes are a lot like any joke one of my friends would make, except not as funny.

Ben Stiller gets my vote mostly by process of elimination.

Chris Farley and Jim Carey are a lot funnier than any member of the frat pack.

Edit: Vince Vaughn would be my second choice, but I chose Ben Stiller because I prefer his sense of humour slightly more over Vaughn's.
