Not the lineup I would have picked for Canada but solid enough to compete for gold. Im happy for once the games will be at normal times with it being in Ottawa.
Too bad I don't have the money to go to any of these games. They're so close to me haha

That sucks. They're great games to go see if you have the opportunity.
I'm excited to see the US team, especially the JVR - Wilson - Schroeder line. This is easily the best team we have had since America won the gold five years ago.

Fuck Marc Andre Fleury for 2004, but that US team was very deserving

JVR-Wilson and Schroeder are going to own.
So good.
What a team this year.

I wish I got the NHL Network :-(

12/23/08, 06:39 PM
The line of Boychuk - Hodgson - Eberle is gonna light it up for Canada. They've played so well together in all the pre-tournament games.
and it looks like Canada have finally found some linemates for Tavares with Jamie Benn and Chris DiDomenico. That line played very well tonight and I was really impressed with how Benn played having not seen much of him before.

Americans come out dominant with an 8-2 victory over Germany. Jordan Schroeder looked amazing with a goal and three assists, and the JVR - Wilson - Schroeder line skated circles around the German blue line.
Chris M.
12/26/08, 04:21 PM
Canada are wearing #29 emblems on their helmets in this tournament in honor of Luc Bourdon. Pretty classy thing to do, I think.
And why the fuck is Esposito playing with DiDomenico and Tavares? Jamie Benn should be playing in his spot. Benn-Tavares-DiDo was a great line combo during the pre-tournament games.
StuGrimson
12/26/08, 04:37 PM
I agree, Esposito was brought on to the team because he demonstrated he was willing to play a defensive/4th line role rather than a top 2 line player. Benn deserves to be there.

USA! While our power line did get 4 goals, I was hoping for me, we are capable of more. I am picky though.
StuGrimson
12/27/08, 06:05 AM
Tavares was phenomenal last night, as was Ryan Ellis who you wll hear me rave about non stop this year. And Tokarski was very solid when he needed to be which is very good because I had Chet Pickard as my starter for the tourney going back months now.
Chris M.
12/27/08, 08:01 AM
To update on what I said about Bourdon earlier, they were wearing "LB" emblems. Not sure why my friend told me they said "29" seeing as Bourdon wore #6 with Canada.
StuGrimson
12/27/08, 08:12 AM
Subban gave up #6 which was nice, he should have just stayed home instead though. As expected he was not very good yesterday.

12/27/08, 08:17 AM
i was actually pretty impressed with esposito for the most part, other than the couple of times he just stood there in the neutral zone watching the puck when he could have made a solid defensive play
Chris M.
12/27/08, 09:16 AM
I was also impressed by Esposito. Obviously I've made it known that Jamie Benn should be playing with DiDo and Tavares instead of him, but he played very well with them last night.
I was actually really pulling for Esposito to make the team this year because I didn't want to see him get cut for a fourth time. I'd like to see him succeed in the NHL, but I really don't think he's good enough defensively or psychologically to be more than a 3rd liner.

12/27/08, 09:32 AM
well you can see he has the skill level to play with elite guys up front, but yeah backchecking is going to be an issue.
StuGrimson
12/27/08, 09:38 AM
Its an unfortunate challenge that comes with playing in the QMJHL where defense first is not really a philosophy used by many, if any, teams. Thats why a lot of heavily touted offensive players (defensemen especially) who come from the Q struggle so much with the transition to the NHL game.

This is a huge pet peeve of mine because people always get it wrong. Fins are on a fish, Finns are people from Finland.
The Latvian fans are fucking hilarious. They brought drums and horns and noisemakers to the game. And even though they lost, they still chanted and singing. It was great.
This is one of the reasons I always want to see Latvia play no matter what the sport is. The Latvian fans are some of the most passionate people around and usually make up for the lackluster play of their teams. I went a few years ago when the played the US in a soccer friendly and the Latvians were there hours beforehand with their drums and noisemakers singing.
StuGrimson
12/27/08, 09:56 AM
I only have in depth info on Canadian players but Grachev is about as soft a player as you will ever see for someone his size. He is decent at everything but great at nothing. I think he is a product of Matt Duchene and Cody Hodgson right now and all he has to do is learn how to use his body to his advantage and he could be a really good imposing player but right now in my mind he is just plain forgettable.

They were great. I got some good pictures of them too. One of their fans ran across the whole arena wearing a Latvian flag on her back. It was so funny. I also like the Argentinian fans. FIFA U20 came to Ottawa last summer and the Argentina fans were so crazy. The whole stadium was shaking, we legit thought it was going to fall down haha.

It's possible. When I was Israel last year, I played against someone who was Kazakhstan's backup goalie in the WJC ten years ago and was able to score on him. And I'm not an elite player.
Wow, how many points for Tavares?
He just scored so at least one. I have to check it out online to find out how many assists he has. But Kazakhstan only has two shots all game.

15-0, 8 power-play goals, 10 different goal scorers, not so bad at all.
Just caught up to this thread, I'm a huge WJHC fan. I, like Stu, am just loving Ryan Ellis. Hadn't heard much about him(we're pretty much devoid of OHL/QMJHL news out West), but he is really, really skilled on the puck. Great hockey sense. It's too bad he has virtually no size, but the comparisons to Brian Rafalski are obvious and warranted.
And I wasn't a huge fan of Tavares or PK Subban before the tournament but both have played well. I'm still not sure Tavares is on the Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin level he's touted at, but he's going to be a solid player for a long time. Still needs to develop in his own end. My uncle saw Subban play Oshawa a while ago and said he absolutely dominated the game, but I haven't seen him do anything like that for Canada, though he was better today.
And Hodgson/Boychuk/Eberle are a pleasure to watch play, I've been high on Boychuk for a while and Hodgson's puck distribution is fantastic.

I agree. I expect to see quite the margin of victory. I also hope to see them work out some of the kinks that came to light against the Czechs.
StuGrimson
12/30/08, 01:51 PM
US has more offensive depth than Canada so I expect just a non stop assault on the goalie, and for Canada scoring 15 goals the goalies actually all things considered didnt play horribly so the US could put up 20 realistically.
Its not about how much you score in this game its about making sure you dont get bad habits and hold Kazakhstan to less than 15 shots, anything more than that is a relative loss.
LastPlaceRocks
12/30/08, 01:55 PM
I think Canada's done a better job utilizing their depth so far in the tourney than the US - the Czech game was basically a one-line game.
StuGrimson
12/30/08, 01:59 PM
Canada has always been about building a team and giving a role to every player on that team, the US and other countries havent quite bought into that yet and continue to try and roll 4 scoring lines year after year. I think thats the only thing that seperates Canada from the rest of the teams. And the dominant defense.
If this was a skills competition Id give the gold medal to the US before the tourney even started.
Tomorrow should be a great matchup (gold medal potential??). I might go and try to get scalper tickets depending when my friends show up for NYE.

I agree - the US has started to buy into this a little over the past couple years, but it's not at the level of Canada. Part of that may have to do with the depth of players in Canada, but overall there's a reason why the US team always seem to have a letdown game in the WJC.

Yeah, who knows? We'll see. Do you mean the Olympics? Canada better not lose in Vancouver haha.
2002 was great though, both men's AND women's hockey!
meh. women's hockey isn't so big of a deal considering there's only 2 countries that even really play it. but beating canada in the olympics in vancouver, despite how unlikely that would be, would just be the best. we would hold that over you guys for sooooooooooo long. probably won't happen, but if it did, it'd just be fantastic.
