View Full Version : An Open Letter to G4 TV about Steven's Untitled Rock Show

This is from my blog, I'm curious what people on here think about the subject.
An Open Letter to G4 TV - Give Steven Smith a Show!
G4,
Last week, news arrived (http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LmFic29sdXRlcHVuay5 uZXQvc2hvd3RocmVhZC5waHA/dD03NTk0MDI=) that Fuse TV would be canceling one of their flagship television shows: "Steven's Untitled Rock Show". Steven's Untitled Rock Show is one of the only shows on television that gives the time of day to smaller, up and coming alternative bands. For this reason, SURS has a loyal, cult-like following of viewers that have long abandoned MTV in search of programming that not only includes their favorite bands, but introduces them to music that they otherwise would not have heard.
G4, this is a perfect opportunity to find new viewers outside of your typically male, gamer audience, without alienating your loyal viewers. Through Attack of the Show (http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vZW4ud2lraXBlZGlhLm9yZy9 3aWtpL0F0dGFja19vZl90aGVfU2hvdyE=), you have proven that a video game and technology oriented television network can touch many more subject matters than the limited scope of just a video games (pop culture, movies, viral videos, and hopefully: MUSIC!)
As a fan of both video games and music, I am asking you to please take this opportunity to give Steven Smith an hour long television show. I'm sure you can find an appropriate way to include both gaming and technology, since it's no secret that many well-known bands (and fans) are also gamers.
Sincerely,
Dan Hunter

I don't see it fitting, at all. Plus G4 is about video games, asian shows and Arrested Development, not music.
bands he covered fucking blew ass. discussed shit music. glad its over. Fuse is doing themselves a service here. This clown would probably ruin video games/not know what hes talking about

Have you ever seen Attack of the Show? They talk about a lot more than just video games. They even used to have bands on it, back in the day. I don't think they've done that in a while, though.

While I didn't like a lot of the bands he covered, he covered a huge variety of genres. I have a hard time believing that he never covered a single band that you enjoyed.
If you think Fuse is doing itself a service by replacing music related programming (however shitty) with (probably) shitty reality reruns and old movies and TV shows, then I'm afraid you're wrong. However, it's still up in the air what's going to take SUR's place. I highly doubt that they'll replace it with a new original show that's music related, but I would love to be wrong.

Haha. Are there not enough places where you can see that shit already?
also people in well known bands =/= good gamers. I am pretty sure when G4 did video game coverage, it was for the competitive gamer that actually had talent. I remember a lot of Halo 3 coverage back in the day but for kids that are basically the real deal and not just the casual shitter.

SURS was fucking lame. Steve was always talking to bands he has never heard of and pretending he knew something. He always had to act interested and failed miserably. Occasionally he would play a good "classic" video. I remember seeing The Anniversary and The Promise Ring on there but that was about it.

Unfortunately Fuse just lost the only interesting show in their lineup. They fucking suck now.
G4tv still has some decency left to it, though not sure if SURS would fit in their lineup. I guess they could fit musicians/gamers into a type of show if they really wanted to try.

1. I think there are plenty of guys in bands that are competitive in FPS's like Halo that would be offended by that comment.
2. If G4 only wants to appeal to the hardcore gamers that play in competitive tournaments, they might as well shut down now. The gaming industry is growing at an exponential rate, and casual gamers are the most lucrative and fastest growing market. It would be absolute suicide to dismiss that section of the gaming industry, and only market towards the 8th graders that sit at home playing Halo 24 hours a day then go to tournaments on weekends.
Also, by casual gamers, I don't just mean middle aged people that only play Wii Sports. I mean most people that don't play competitively on a regular basis, build their own computers from scratch in their garage, etc.
I consider myself a somewhat casual gamer. I buy a lot of different types of games, and play relatively frequently, but wouldn't ever expect to see my Gamertag on any top 100 lists.

Yea, like MTV, VH1, Fuse, etc.
I'm not apposed to stations branching out to add some variety, but there's a difference between doing something unique and digging through the dumpster for quick cash. I wouldn't consider G4 having a show that combines music and gaming to be digging through the dumpster.

That was his job, talking to a shit load of diverse bands. It's not like he's interviewing Fall Out Boy one week, and Metallica the next. He's interviewing a much higher volume of smaller bands that are a lot harder to know and research. I personally think that it's worth having some mediocre interviews to bring on a bunch of diverse bands.
Steven probably only had bands that I really liked on his show 5 or 10 times, ever. But I still would watch more often than that because I hadn't heard of many of the acts he brought on.

How about an open letter to G4 about more fucking video game coverage on a VIDEO GAME CHANNEL. That or bring back TechTV, G4 fucking sucks now.
Amen. That channel has so much trash on it now. It's only good for E3 and CES coverage and that's it.

I don't see it fitting, at all. Plus G4 is about video games, asian shows and Arrested Development, not music.Eh. I don't see why not. It's not a giant part of the line-up, but they have the Freestyle 101 segment on their channel, which is a bunch of rappers doing freestyles about whatever they want. They could always consider this an expansion of that into rock music.

It seems like AP is somewhat divided over this (more divided than I originally expected them to be). 70% of AP seems extremely upset, while the other 30% or so seem to think Steven is a douche.

I always loved the guy. I started watching his show while I was fairly new to the scene and a lot of my now favorite bands came to me thanks to his show.

The truly odd thing is that there is clearly still a market for music television. Everyone I talk to about this (including people that are both quite younger and quite older than me and who listen to different music than me) seem to agree that they would still like to watch music videos and concerts on TV. If you only have basic cable, and the only "music" channels you get are MTV and VH1...good luck finding a concert unless you sit home and watch PBS on Saturday nights.
The market is clearly there. And with the way advertising is going, it could be a goldmine to have a channel that only shows music videos and concerts...ALL THE TIME.

Sadly, I don't get FUSE, but I saw it a few years ago and really liked it. However, I do have G4, so I wouldn't mind a music show on there.

You're completely right. Even 13 year olds know that MTV has "sold out". Pretty funny, and sad.

I'm so disappointed. All of TV is going downhill. Fuse barely covers music, MTV went down the same road long ago, VH1 is all top 40, G4 is all Cops and Japanese shit, and there's only a season left of Scrubs. SURS was one of the only shows I actually watched. I would get home from school, turn to FUSE, and just lay back and listen to the bands that were on it.
Dan, I think you should host your own show. It'd be great.

What I really don't get is that while MTV, MTV2 and FUSE have all given up on any type of music programming, there are two country channels that are non-stop country music television. Granted, both have sets that look like they were filmed in my basement, but they play videos all the time. So there must be some sort of market for these channels to stay on the air, I don't see why there wouldn't be for alternative/indie music. Is it that tough or do CMT and GAC know something that other channels are missing out on?
Also, MTV has been balls ever since they bought out The Box and ran it into the ground. $1.99 for a video, brilliant!
