Mychildren Mybride - Unbreakable
Record Label: Solid State Records
Release Date: February 26, 2008
Maybe this was meant to be a warning for me. Maybe I shouldn’t ever fall in love with just one song that I hear online because it may only lead me to disappointment upon purchase of the record. The specific example I’m speaking of is Mychildren Mybride’s debut record, Unbreakable.
Over this past summer, I discovered Mychildren Mybride while searching through Purevolume. I don’t know why, but the genres the band had listed was enough for me to at least click on to the page and give them a listen. Shortly thereafter I was listening to “Faithless” and was blown away. Here was a metalcore band that not only had metal hooks, but good ones too. The song was nearly perfect with its opening hook, chugging guitars, and relentless double bass. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to say the same for the record.
Unbreakable begins “Faithless”, and as I just said, is nearly perfect. I’d consider it one of the best metalcore songs I’ve heard all year. This song does, however, cause a problem. It is so good that it sets the bar very high for the rest of the record and the band just can’t make it back to that level on the remaining nine songs. These songs tend to be a bit boring and drawn out for the average listener. Boring songs can be redeemed to an extent if the track isn’t terribly long, a caveat which Mychildren Mybride do use to save themselves at various points through Unbreakable.
Ultimately, there are few stand-out tracks to be found on Unbreakable. Both “Severance” and “Circle of the Sky” are the closest tracks to “Faithless” on the record. “Headshot!” (which features guest vocals from the now ex-singer of For The Fallen Dreams, Chad Ruhlig) is another stand-out track.
Despite my disappointment in the record, it’s not all bad. The band isn’t completely consumed by typical metalcore clichés and these guys truly know how to play their instruments. The drumming from Brian Hood is very good, but his frequent double bass use becomes tiring after a while (come on, is every five seconds necessary?!).
It is my hope that the band builds on their love of metal hooks. It’s no surprise that the better tracks off of Unbreakable are the one that delve in to the metal side. There have been several personnel changes since the release of this record, so we’ll have to wait and see which direction Mychildren Mybride will go with their follow-up.
