One of the newest signers to Suburban Home, The Takers. Fantastic song, album should be out early next year.

Curse of a Drunk

and the curse of a drunk is that he'll go home alone...and I'm killing myself fighting this civil war.

Suburban Home, 2008
Author: Zach
Score: 8.5 / 10

The Takers are the newest signing to Suburban Home Records and their growing stable of alt-country, folk, bluegrass and basically just all around roots artists. The Takers hail from Gainesville, FL, and as stated by Suburban Home, are a six-piece Outlaw Country band that includes two members of Whiskey & Co.

Curse of a Drunk comes out swinging like a surly drunk who's got nothing to lose. Vicious, reeking of whiskey and desperation, and fighting for lost dreams, this album pulls no punches. It's a straight ahead ode to those not leading a charmed life. The self titled A-side is fairly self explanatory. It finds the protagonist lamenting his life as a drunk, and his struggles. What really shines is lead singer Devon Vlasin's ability to take the listener both into the alcohol induced stupor and quiet moments of lucidity that the protagonist goes through. It's a beautiful piece of storytelling, and it brings to my mind “Corpus Christi Bay” by Robert Earl Keen. The B-Side is a cover of Neil Young's “Powderfinger.” While one could argue that song's specific meaning, it's a wonderful cover and well executed.

We can expect great things from this band, so don't be caught sleeping and not grab a copy of this 7”. You'll thank me later.

........and no buddy cares, but the debut cd produced by Austin Lucas is about finished..

Tomorrow we go in the studio to finish up our full length. Cross your fingers and it might be done by Saturday, just don't bet on it. Keep your ears towards heaven.

Yeah, I like this... very chill. This is something I'd expect ChrisKilo to like, too. Normally, country isn't my thing but this reminds me of Steve Earle meets The Hold Steady (in the vocals).

THE TAKERS “Taker Easy” LP/CD/Digital
The Takers might be the most Country of all of our bands (whatever that means), but don’t let that designation scare you. Devon from the Takers writes great songs and when it all comes down to it, that should be all that matters. Their sound is straight out of the 70’s Outlaw Country scene that Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams Jr all helped forge. And if you really think about it, there are not a lot of bands doing this now. If you have the misguided notion to tune into commercial Country pretty much all you get is cheesy pop music. The Takers sound is influnced by the legends of Honky Tonk and the Outlaw Movement with lyrics inspired by the struggles of life and the curse of the bottle. Recorded at Crescendo Sound studios by Derron Nuhfer and Addison Burns, the ablum sounds like it was recorded 30 years ago. The album will become the soundtrack for your summer as it will provide the perfect theme music for late drunken nights and the long mornings after. We recommend you drink PBR and Jack Daniels when listening to this album.

AUSTIN LUCAS w/ THE TAKERS 7″/digital
I absolutely love where we are at with the label these days. We have what I consider to be some of the greatest new voices in Americana and our artists not only tour together, but in the case of the Austin Lucas with the Takers 7″, they also record together. Soon after Austin finished recording his modern day masterpiece, “Somebody Loves You”, he flew down to Florida to see family, play a few shows, and hang out with friends. During these days, he hooked up with Suburban Home’s newest band, the Takers, to record 4 songs at Crescendo Studios (the same session Austin recorded his Under the Influence track, “To Daddy”). The Takers, for those of you who don’t know, are Suburban Home’s Outlaw Country band. The Takers call Gainesville, Florida home, have members of Whiskey and Co, and after having put out an incredible debut 7″, have recently finished recording their debut album for us. The 4 song 7″ finds Austin performing on the Takers’ tracks and the Takers performing on Austin’s tracks and the session might fool you into thinking that the guys have been playing together for years. There are 2 covers and 2 originals.

The 7″ will be initially pressed out of an edition of 500 copies on Frosty Blue vinyl. Mp3 Download coupon will be included.

stoked!

pre-orders should be going up next week.

Free download of a new song. Taker Easy (http://suburbanhomerecords.com/mediafiles/thetakers/mp3/takereasy_160.mp3).

We are so fucking excited to be putting out the debut album for the Takers and we can't wait for you to hear the title track from the album. The song, "Taker Easy" might be my favorite song from the album, although there are about 3 or 4 songs that take that distinction depending on the day. The song gives you a pretty good taste of what to expect and for me, the album reminds me of the Country and Western my dad played for me in his pickup truck. He would actually be rolling over in his grave if he knew we worked with bands like the Takers. As a kid, I had no love for the genre, but it is funny how your life takes you down a lot of different paths and at the end, you find yourself loving the music you once hated.

I said it before, I'll say it again. The Takers are Suburban Home's Outlaw Country band. They should be sent back in time to share the stage with, Johnny, and Waylon, but lucky for us, they are a band now. I love this band, I love this record, and I hope you might consider taking a listen. If you like what you hear, please consider downloading the track and sharing it with others. Put it on a mix tape, send the link to friends, post it on your blog. And while you are at it, make sure you pre-order their upcoming album (and while you are there, don't forget their Curse of a Drunk 7" and their split with Austin Lucas).

The Takers releases for sale in the Vinyl Collective/Suburban Home store

We are working on a huge contest with Punknews and are hoping to give away a bottle of whiskey to one lucky Punknews reader. Stay tuned for that (still trying to work out the logistics).

New AP gives the new album 2 1/2 star, and attempts to knock them because they sound too similiar to Whiskey & Co. and Two Cow Garage, as if that's an insulting.....Oh ya and on the same page they give the new Used album 4 1/2 stars. That's some quality coverage.

They did? Didn't even notice. Las time I bought an issue was three years ago, and since then I'll just occasionally flip through the new issues when they hit the stands just to see if there's anything worthwhile. Occasionally there will be an interesting article or two, or a few good bands covered, and I check out the reviews, but yeah, not a consistent magazine at all.

It was on the last page where they do the 10 Essentials. I only remember it because it reminded me of the song as I rarely listen to Nobody's Darling (my least favorite lucero record).

Taste wise I have little in common with the magazine, I rarely know or like the cover bands, but for $1 an issue it ain't a bad read when you're stuck on a train for 12 hours.
