...but not sure what to get.
I play in a band that plays hardcore/punk and most our songs are in a drop D tuning so the guitar has to handle that parta and it's gotta be looking OK but nothing like a metal guitar with the ugly shaps.
Anyone got any suggestions?

G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L! G&L!
Though a G&L might be out of your price range and probably not so much your sound.
I guess I would suggest an Epiphone or Tokai Les Paul unless you're looking to spend a lot of money then go for a Gibson. They're versatile as hell and have a pretty solid tone. The Tokai one's are great value.
The other choice if you're more of a punk player than hardcore would be a double cut Les Paul with P-90 pick ups. P-90's have a very punk sound where the signal is almost breaking up.
As for the Drop D thing, any guitar can handle Drop D it's just a matter of customising the bridge. If you buy a new guitar get the shop to set it up for you.

Okay small tip: buy a fender squire/strat (cheap as chips) then remove the back single coil pick up and replace it with seymour duncan hot rails (a humbucker that fits into a one coil slot) sounds fat as hell...

Jackson or Ibanez sounds like it would suit you fine. Most any guitar with tuners that work can handle drop D tuning.

However, now people sell the new for like 300 when 3 years ago they were going for round 1000....check itout ..http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38083&item=7331739996&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

A friend of mine has a similar model. It's fantastic, great action, great guitar for rhythm playing. Lead is pretty good too, I liked its natural tone.

www.music123.com stocks the online. If you want to play one though I would think your local music store would most likely stock one. That's where I first laid hands on one.
Just a quick note to thread starter, make sure you play the guitar too! Buying on just appearance is never a good step.

I have an ESP and would recommend it to anyone. Most of the metal men use them so they can easily handle drop D and they have an awesome tone. My old guitar is an Ibanez which I rather liked but I got it second hand and it had decent pickups on it, whereas some of entry level Ibanez's have pickups that don't amplify high frequencies that well. At least thats what I found when i was trialling guitars. My ESP only cost me $500AU which is pretty good. They probably sell for around $250 in the US. I got me a H-50.

I've played guitar for 3 years and still do alot so it's about to get a new one. Do music123 ship outside the USA and can you say they are a propper company I can trust?

Music123 do ship outside the US however some brands they do not ship. Gibson and Fender being the big two.
I've bought pedals off the site before shipped to New Zealand and they ship through UPS. They're very reliable and you can track your order at anytime. So the business side is fantastic but you will have to check on brands.

ibanez sa 160...best tone for the price. i play in drop c and it handles the low tone amazingly. but its all about personal choice. go to a guitar shop and play around with a bunch and chose that way.
im planning on getting this guitar soon

but not until i try this baby out...

its not as common as a les paul...so if you wanna stand out from all the bands you play with, this would do it
I need a new guitar soon, I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special. But I don't feel like playing a Les Paul anymore. I play hardcore and punk so refer me some good guitars!

Ibanez
I think that would be my best bet. Most of their guitars are affordable and good.

Ibanez are grossly overated IMO. The necks are brilliant and playable but the guitars have genuine problems in pretty much all their product under $1500. Tuning heads are horrible and the guitars move out of tune easily, pick ups also leave much to be desired. That said, an Ibanez with adjustments can lead to be a brilliant guitar.
I have my G&L ASAT and there will not be a better guitar made in mass production ever. Hand made Leo Fender guitar = sex.
